Developing inclusive later life learning environments: insights from intersectional analysis of ageing and lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual identities
To date there has been minimal empirical inquiry on what may constitute inclusive learning environments for older (50+ years) lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) adults. This paper draws upon a recent life-histories study with older LGBT adults in Scotland to consider how such environments can be developed. To do so, intersectional analysis is applied to interrogate how participants' lived realities and sense of self are enabled and constrained by the interactions between their diverse ageing, LGBT and other identities in the particular contexts of later life, post work. The paper argues that by adopting this approach to intersectional analysis, critical educational gerontology (CEG) is equipped to more effectively realise inclusive, meaningful and potentially empowering learning environments for older LGBT adults. These will be more attuned to their later life realities, enabling them to reflect on the changing significance of being LGBT as they age, while allowing potential for personal growth and renewed sense of self
Logic Programming for Describing and Solving Planning Problems
A logic programming paradigm which expresses solutions to problems as stable
models has recently been promoted as a declarative approach to solving various
combinatorial and search problems, including planning problems. In this
paradigm, all program rules are considered as constraints and solutions are
stable models of the rule set. This is a rather radical departure from the
standard paradigm of logic programming. In this paper we revisit abductive
logic programming and argue that it allows a programming style which is as
declarative as programming based on stable models. However, within abductive
logic programming, one has two kinds of rules. On the one hand predicate
definitions (which may depend on the abducibles) which are nothing else than
standard logic programs (with their non-monotonic semantics when containing
with negation); on the other hand rules which constrain the models for the
abducibles. In this sense abductive logic programming is a smooth extension of
the standard paradigm of logic programming, not a radical departure.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, Eighth International Workshop on Nonmonotonic

Knowledge and organisational success:developing a scale of knowledge framework
The aim of this exploratory research is to understand
further how organisations can evaluate their activities, which
generate knowledge creation, to meet changing stakeholder
expectations. A Scale of Knowledge (SoK) Framework is proposed
which links knowledge management and organisational activities to
changing stakeholder expectations. The framework was informed by
the knowledge management literature, as well as empirical work
conducted via a single case study of a multi-site hospital organisation
in Saudi Arabia. Eight in-depth semi-structured interviews were
conducted with managers from across the organisation regarding
current and future stakeholder expectations, organisational
strategy/activities and knowledge management. Data were analysed
using thematic analysis and a hierarchical value map technique to
identify activities that can produce further knowledge and
consequently impact on how stakeholder expectations are met.
The SoK Framework developed may be useful to practitioners as
an analytical aid to determine if current organisational activities
produce organisational knowledge which helps them meet
(increasingly higher levels of) stakeholder expectations. The
limitations of the research and avenues for future development of the
proposed framework are discussed
A Review of integrity constraint maintenance and view updating techniques
Two interrelated problems may arise when updating a database. On one
hand, when an update is applied to the database, integrity constraints
may become violated. In such case, the integrity constraint maintenance
approach tries to obtain additional updates to keep integrity
constraints satisfied. On the other hand, when updates of derived or
view facts are requested, a view updating mechanism must be applied to
translate the update request into correct updates of the underlying base
facts.
This survey reviews the research performed on integrity constraint
maintenance and view updating. It is proposed a general framework to
classify and to compare methods that tackle integrity constraint
maintenance and/or view updating. Then, we analyze some of these methods
in more detail to identify their actual contribution and the main
limitations they may present.Postprint (published version
Eureka moments in research : exploring abductive processes using four case examples
Abduction plays an important but often unacknowledged role in research – this regrettably leaving a large part of the research process hidden and unexamined (Levin-Rozalis 2000), particularly important innovative or creative components. This paper, firstly, introduces abduction and discusses some important concepts related to abduction and innovation. Secondly, it presents author’s own re-descriptions of previous research work. This new description seeks to describe perceived key “Eureka” moments in the research and thus make the creative components and abductive elements more visible. The paper demonstrates that much can be gained from opening a reflective space for the role of abduction in the research process.<br /
Abductive two-dimensionalism: a new route to the a priori identification of necessary truths
Epistemic two-dimensional semantics, advocated by Chalmers and Jackson, among others, aims to restore the link between necessity and a priority seemingly broken by Kripke, by showing how armchair access to semantic intensions provides a basis for knowledge of necessary a posteriori truths. The most compelling objections to E2D are that, for one or other reason, the requisite intensions are not accessible from the armchair. As we substantiate here, existing versions of E2D are indeed subject to such access-based objections. But, we moreover argue, the difficulty lies not with E2D but with the typically presupposed conceiving-based epistemology of intensions. Freed from that epistemology, and given the right alternative—one where inference to the best explanation provides the operative guide to intensions—E2D can meet access-based objections, and fulfill its promise of restoring the desirable link between necessity and a priority. This result serves as a central application of Biggs and Wilson, according to which abduction is an a priori mode of inference
An Application Specific Informal Logic for Interest Prohibition Theory
Interest prohibition theory concerns theoretical aspects of interest
prohibition. We attempt to lay down some aspects of interest prohibition theory
wrapped in a larger framework of informal logic. The reason for this is that
interest prohibition theory has to deal with a variety of arguments which is so
wide that a limitation to so-called correct arguments in advance is
counterproductive. We suggest that an application specific informal logic must
be developed for dealing with the principles of interest prohibition theory.Comment: 8 page
