A new species of Anastrepha from Amazonia : with redescriptions of A. caudata Stone and A. hendeliana Lima (Diptera: Tephritidae)
Three species of Anastrepha from upper Amazonia are described or redescribed and illustrated. They are considered closely related and are placed in the A. caudata species group. Anastrepha caudata Stone 1942 is redescribed based on the holotype, the only known specimen. Its type locality is probably São Paulo de Olivença in Amazonas, Brazil, not the state or city of São Paulo as previously assumed. Anastrepha hendeliana Lima 1934, new status, is removed from synonymy with A. longicauda Lima 1934 based on specimens from Brazil (Amazonas and Rondonia) and Colombia (Caquetá). The female is described for the first time. Anastrepha brunnealata, n. sp., is described from specimens from Venezuela (Amazonas) and probably Peru (Loreto). Anastrepha longicauda Lima is placed in the dentata species group.
A new millipede of the genus Gonographis from an inundation forest near Manaus, Brazil (Pyrgodesmidae)
Gonographis adisi (Pyrgodesmidae, Diplopoda) is newly described from a blackwater inundation forest near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The species is able to survive submersion of up to eleven months
A water level relationship between consecutive gauge stations along Solim\~oes/Amazonas main channel: a wavelet approach
Gauge stations are distributed along the Solim\~oes/Amazonas main channel to
monitor water level changes over time. Those measurements help quantify both
the water movement and its variability from one gauge station to the next
downstream. The objective of this study is to detect changes in the water level
relationship between consecutive gauge stations along the Solim\~oes/Amazonas
main channel, since 1980. To carry out the analyses, data spanning from 1980 to
2010 from three consecutive gauges (Tefe, Manaus and Obidos) were used to
compute standardized daily anomalies. In particular for infra-annual periods it
was possible to detect changes for the water level variability along the
Solim\~oes/Amazonas main channel, by applying the Morlet Wavelet Transformation
(WT) and Wavelet Cross Coherence (WCC) methods. It was possible to quantify the
waves amplitude for the WT infra-annual scaled-period and were quite similar to
the three gauge stations denoting that the water level variability are related
to the same hydrological forcing functions. Changes in the WCC was detected for
the Manaus-Obidos river stretch and this characteristic might be associated
with land cover changes in the floodplains. The next steps of this research,
will be to test this hypotheses by integrating land cover changes into the
floodplain with hydrological modelling simulations throughout the time-series

Relationships among catches, fishing effort and river morphology for eight rivers in Amazonas State (Brazil), during 1976-1978
For eight rivers in the Amazonas State (Brazil), it is shown that the annual number of fìshermen and dummy variables, which identify the rivers, explain 98.8 % of the landings at Manaus market. Partial correlation analysis suggests that only the most productive floodplains are actively sought by professional fishermen. Keywords: river ecology, floodplain fisheries, multiple regressio
A complete checklist with new records and geographical distribution of the rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) of Brazil
This paper presents the first comprehensive list of 2,688 species of Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) recorded from Brazil. The list is based on the taxonomic and ecological literature, and new records from some insect collections, and includes locality references for each species. In addition, Brazilian localities and the country-level distribution outside of Brazil are provided for each species. Brazilian localities are organized by state, and include the bibliographic reference and page number where each locality was reported. All localities are geo-referenced, organized by state, and listed in an Appendix.
