    Word contexts enhance the neural representation of individual letters in early visual cortex

    Visual context facilitates perception, but how this is neurally implemented remains unclear. One example of contextual facilitation is found in reading, where letters are more easily identified when embedded in a word. Bottom-up models explain this word advantage as a post-perceptual decision bias, while top-down models propose that word contexts enhance perception itself. Here, we arbitrate between these accounts by presenting words and nonwords and probing the representational fidelity of individual letters using functional magnetic resonance imaging. In line with top-down models, we find that word contexts enhance letter representations in early visual cortex. Moreover, we observe increased coupling between letter information in visual cortex and brain activity in key areas of the reading network, suggesting these areas may be the source of the enhancement. Our results provide evidence for top-down representational enhancement in word recognition, demonstrating that word contexts can modulate perceptual processing already at the earliest visual regions

    Design and Evaluation of a Pressure Based Typing Biometric Authentication System

    The design and preliminary evaluation of a pressure sensor-based typing biometrics authentication system (PBAS) is discussed in this paper. This involves the integration of pressure sensors, signal processing circuit, and data acquisition devices to generate waveforms, which when concatenated, produce a pattern for the typed password. The system generates two templates for typed passwords. First template is for the force applied on each password key pressed. The second template is for latency of the password keys. These templates are analyzed using two classifiers. Autoregressive (AR) classifier is used to authenticate the pressure template. Latency classifier is used to authenticate the latency template. Authentication is complete by matching the results of these classifiers concurrently. The proposed system has been implemented by constructing users’ database patterns which are later matched to the biometric patterns entered by each user, thereby enabling the systemto accept or reject the user. Experiments have been conducted to test the performance of the overall PBAS system and results obtained showed that this proposed system is reliable with many potential applications for computer security

    Multi-classifier ensemble based on dynamic weights

    In this study, a novel multi-classifier ensemble method based on dynamic weights is proposed to reduce the interference of unreliable decision information and improve the accuracy of fusion decision. The algorithm defines decision credibility to describe the real-time importance of the classifier to the current target, combines this credibility with the reliability calculated by the classifier on the training data set and dynamically assigns the fusion weight to the classifier. Compared with other methods, the contribution of different classifiers to fusion decision in acquiring weights is fully evaluated in consideration of the capability of the classifier to not only identify different sample regions but also output decision information when identifying specific targets. Experimental results on public face databases show that the proposed method can obtain higher classification accuracy than that of single classifier and some popular fusion algorithms.     The primary purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate one of the applications of P300 event-related potential (ERP), i.e., brain-computer interface (BCI).
