Advanced shape context for plant species identification using leaf image retrieval

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents a novel method for leaf species identification combining local and shape-based features. Our approach extends the shape context model in two ways. First of all, two different sets of points are distinguished when computing the shape contexts: the voting set, i.e. the points used to describe the coarse arrangement of the shape and the computing set containing the points where the shape contexts are computed. This representation is enriched by introducing local features computed in the neighborhood of the computing points. Experiments show the effectiveness of our approach

    Simple identification tools in FishBase

    Get PDF
Simple identification tools for fish species were included in the FishBase information system from its inception. Early tools made use of the relational model and characters like fin ray meristics. Soon pictures and drawings were added as a further help, similar to a field guide. Later came the computerization of existing dichotomous keys, again in combination with pictures and other information, and the ability to restrict possible species by country, area, or taxonomic group. Today, www.FishBase.org offers four different ways to identify species. This paper describes these tools with their advantages and disadvantages, and suggests various options for further development. It explores the possibility of a holistic and integrated computeraided strategy

Study of Various Techniques for Medicinal Plant Identification

Ayurveda, the Indian ancient medicinal system, has gained importance because of its effectiveness in treating diseases. Medicinal plants are used in Ayurvedic medicines since ancient times. It is necessary to classify these plants so that it would be easy to select the right plant for the medicinal preparation or to study more about its characteristics. Identification is the pre-condition of classification of medicinal plant. In this paper, we have reviewed Image processing Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), taxonomic key repository, neural network and DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA) barcoding. The study shows that image processing is leading domain in identification of medicinal plant. The results are improved when multiple methods are used together in a sequence to identify a medicinal plant. Apart from that none of these methods are using geographical information to identify medicinal plants and we can use geographical Information System (GIS) information to improve its accuracy further

    LifeCLEF Plant Identification Task 2015

    Get PDF
International audienceThe LifeCLEF plant identification challenge aims at evaluating plant identification methods and systems at a very large scale, close to the conditions of a real-world biodiversity monitoring scenario. The 2015 evaluation was actually conducted on a set of more than 100K images illustrating 1000 plant species living in West Europe. The main originality of this dataset is that it was built through a large-scale partic-ipatory sensing plateform initiated in 2011 and which now involves tens of thousands of contributors. This overview presents more precisely the resources and assessments of the challenge, summarizes the approaches and systems employed by the participating research groups, and provides an analysis of the main outcomes

Malaysian medicinal plant leaf shape identification and classification

Malaysian medicinal plants may be abundant natural resources but there has not been much research done on preserving the knowledge of these medicinal plants which enables general public to know the leaf using computing capability. This study proposes a framework to identify and classify tropical medicinal plants in Malaysia based the extracted patterns from the leaf. The extracted patterns from medicinal plant leaf are obtained based on several angle features.Five classifiers, obtained from WEKA and an ensemble classifier, called Direct Ensemble Classifier for Imbalanced Multiclass Learning (DECIML), are used to compare their performance accuracies over this data.In this experiment, five species of Malaysian medicinal plants are identified and classified in which each species will be represented by using 65 images. This study is important in order to assist local community to utilize the knowledge discovery and application of Malaysian medicinal plants for future generation

Developing A Neural Network-Based Model for Identifying Medicinal Plant Leaves Using Image Recognition Techniques

Herbal plants contribute an important role in people's health and the environment, as they can provide both medical benefits and oxygen. Many herbal plants contain valuable therapeutic elements that can be passed down to future generations. Traditional methods of identifying plant species, such as manual measurement and examination of characteristics, are labor-intensive and time-consuming. To address this, there has been a push to develop more efficient methods using technology, such as digital image processing and pattern recognition techniques. The exact recognition of plants uses methodologies like computer vision and neural networks, which have been proposed earlier. This approach involves neural network models such as CNN, ALexnet, and ResNet for identifying the medical plants based on their respective features. Classification metrics give the 96.82 average accuracies. These results have been promising, and further research will involve using a larger dataset and going more into deep-learning neural networks to improve the accuracy of medicinal plant identification. It is hoped that a web or mobile-based system for automatic plant identification can help increase knowledge about medicinal plants, improve techniques for species recognition, and participate in the preservation of species that are considered ad endangered
