E-agriculture, sometimes reffered as 'ICT in agriculture' (Information and Communication technologies) or simply "smart agriculture", is a relatively recent and emerging field focused on the enhacement on agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. This concept, involves the design, development, evaluation and application of innovative ways to use IoT technologies in the rural domain, with a primary focus on agriculture, in order to achieve better ways of growing food for the masses with sustainability. In IoT-based agriculture, platforms are built for monitoring the crop field with the help of sensors (light, humidity, temperature, soil moisture, etc.) and automating the irrigation system. The farmers can monitor the field conditions from anywhere and highly more efficient compared to conventional approaches

Image Transmission over Resource-constrained Low-Power Radio Networks

    Get PDF
The transmission of large amounts of data over resource-constrained radio frequency (RF) networks is impacted by regulatory constraints and can affect reliability due to channel congestion. These barriers limit the use case to specific applications. This research extends the use case scenario to include the transmission of digital images over such networks which to date has not been widely documented. To achieve this, the overall data volume needs to be reduced to manageable limits. Drawing on previous theoretical work this research explored, developed and implemented novel image compression techniques suitable for use in resource-constrained RF networks. A compression technique was developed which allows variable compression ratios to be selected dependent on the specific use case. This was implemented in an end-to-end low-power radio network operating in license-free spectrum using a customised radio frequency testbed. The robust compression scheme which was developed here enabled out-of-sequence packet reception, further increasing the reliability of the transmission. To allow detailed viewing of a region of interest (ROI) within a large format image (quarter video graphics array) to be transmitted, a novel algorithm was designed and implemented. This enabled the transmission of a region of interest (ROI) in an uncompressed format as a stand-alone image portion, or in combination with a fully compressed image. Significantly, this yielded flexibility in the quantity of data to be transmitted which could increase the lifespan of battery powered devices. A further development allowed direct manipulation of individual image pixels. This permitted additional data, such as battery voltage level to be directly embedded in the transmitted image data. An advantage of this innovative method was that it did not incur any extra overhead in data volume requirements. The embodied system developed is an agnostic image compression algorithm and is suitable for use with resource-constrained devices and networks. Results showed that high compression ratios (70%) with good peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 36dB was achievable for a complete end-to-end transmission system

Ag-IoT for crop and environment monitoring: Past, present, and future

    Get PDF
CONTEXT: Automated monitoring of the soil-plant-atmospheric continuum at a high spatiotemporal resolution is a key to transform the labor-intensive, experience-based decision making to an automatic, data-driven approach in agricultural production. Growers could make better management decisions by leveraging the real-time field data while researchers could utilize these data to answer key scientific questions. Traditionally, data collection in agricultural fields, which largely relies on human labor, can only generate limited numbers of data points with low resolution and accuracy. During the last two decades, crop monitoring has drastically evolved with the advancement of modern sensing technologies. Most importantly, the introduction of IoT (Internet of Things) into crop, soil, and microclimate sensing has transformed crop monitoring into a quantitative and data-driven work from a qualitative and experience-based task. OBJECTIVE: Ag-IoT systems enable a data pipeline for modern agriculture that includes data collection, transmission, storage, visualization, analysis, and decision-making. This review serves as a technical guide for Ag-IoT system design and development for crop, soil, and microclimate monitoring. METHODS: It highlighted Ag-IoT platforms presented in 115 academic publications between 2011 and 2021 worldwide. These publications were analyzed based on the types of sensors and actuators used, main control boards, types of farming, crops observed, communication technologies and protocols, power supplies, and energy storage used in Ag-IoT platforms

The Internet of Things, which has been quietly building and evolving over the past decade, now impacts many aspects of society, including homes, battlefields, and medical communities. Research in information systems, traditionally, has been concentrated on exploring the impacts of such technology, rather than how to actually create systems using it. Although research in design science could especially contribute to the Internet of Things, this type of research from the Information Systems community has been sparse. The most likely cause is the knowledge barriers to learning and understanding this kind of technology development. Recognizing the importance of the continued evolution of the Internet of Things, this paper provides a basic tutorial on how to construct Internet of Things prototypes. The paper is intended to educate Information Systems scholars on how to build their own Internet of Things so they can conduct technical research in this area and instruct their students on how to do the same

Indoor air quality monitoring has attracted increasing attention with the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization in the modern society as people typically spend more than 80% of their time in indoor environments. A novel indoor air quality detector (IAQD) integrated with multiple communication interfaces has been designed, built, programmed deployed and tested in order to meet the requirements of wide variety of scenarios. The IAQD measures the indoor air quality data, including temperature, humidity, CO2, dust and formaldehyde timely. With state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the IAQD is integrated with Modbus, LoRa, WiFi, GPRS and NB-IoT communication interfaces, which enables to be applied to wired communications, short-range wireless communications, and remote transmission to the cloud. The designed software in cloud allows users to track the indoor air quality of their home or office or industries everywhere. The performance IAQD is evaluated in terms of packet loss rate and time delay. The evaluation of IAQD are demonstrated and analyzed within the office environment over a week. Experimental results show that the proposed system is effectiveness in measuring the air-quality status and provide excellent consistency and stability

The design and implementation of a smart-parking system for Helsinki Area

The strain on the parking infrastructure for the general public has significantly grown as a result of the ever rising number of vehicles geared by the rapid population growth in urban areas. Consequently, finding a vacant parking space has become quite a challenging task, especially at peak hours. Drivers have to cycle back and forth a number of times before they finally find where to park. This leads to increased fuel consumption, air pollution, and increased likelihood of causing accidents, to mention but a few. Paying for the parking is not straight forward either, as the ticket machines, on top of being located at a distance, in many times, they have several payment methods drivers must prepare for. A system therefore, that would allow drivers to check for the vacant parking places before driving to a busy city, takes care of the parking fee for exact time they have used, manages electronic parking permit, is the right direction towards toppling these difficulties. The main objective of this project was to design and implement a system that would provide parking occupancy estimation, parking fee payment method, parking permit management and parking analytics for the city authorities. The project had three phases. The first and the second phases used qualitative approaches to validate our hypotheses about parking shortcoming in Helsinki area and the recruitment of participants to the pilot of the project, respectively. The third phase involved the design, implementation and installation of the system. The other objective was to study the challenges a smart parking system would face at different stages of its life cycle. The objectives of the project were achieved and the considered assumption about the challenges associated with parking in a busy city were validated. A smart parking system will allow drivers to check for available parking spaces beforehand, they are able to pay for the parking fee, they can get electronic parking permits, and the city authority can get parking analytics for the city plannin

The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained significant mindshare, let alone attention, in academia and the industry especially over the past few years. The reasons behind this interest are the potential capabilities that IoT promises to offer. On the personal level, it paints a picture of a future world where all the things in our ambient environment are connected to the Internet and seamlessly communicate with each other to operate intelligently. The ultimate goal is to enable objects around us to efficiently sense our surroundings, inexpensively communicate, and ultimately create a better environment for us: one where everyday objects act based on what we need and like without explicit instructions
