    Heterogeneous hierarchical workflow composition

    Workflow systems promise scientists an automated end-to-end path from hypothesis to discovery. However, expecting any single workflow system to deliver such a wide range of capabilities is impractical. A more practical solution is to compose the end-to-end workflow from more than one system. With this goal in mind, the integration of task-based and in situ workflows is explored, where the result is a hierarchical heterogeneous workflow composed of subworkflows, with different levels of the hierarchy using different programming, execution, and data models. Materials science use cases demonstrate the advantages of such heterogeneous hierarchical workflow composition.This work is a collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center within the Joint Laboratory for Extreme-Scale Computing.     Using Message Passing Instead of the GOTO Construct

    This report describes research conducted at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Support for this research was provided in part by the Office of Naval Research of the Department of Defense under Contract N00014-75-C-0522.This paper advocates a programming methodology using message passing. Efficient programs are derived for fast exponentiation, merging ordered sequences, and path existence determination in a directed graph. The problems have been proposed by John Reynolds as interesting ones to investigate because they illustrate significant issues in programming. The methodology advocated here is directed toward the production of programs that are intended to execute efficiently in a computing environment with many processors.     Work reported herein was conducted at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology research program supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and monitored by the Office of Naval Research under Contract Number N00014-70-A-0362-0005.This paper proposes three research topics within the general framework of Automatic Programming. The projects are designing (1) a student programmer, (2) a robot programmer and (3) a physicist's helper. The purpose of these projects is both to explore fundamental ideas regarding the nature of programming as well as to propose practical applications of AI research.     A Review of Lightweight Thread Approaches for High Performance Computing

    High-level, directive-based solutions are becoming the programming models (PMs) of the multi/many-core architectures. Several solutions relying on operating system (OS) threads perfectly work with a moderate number of cores. However, exascale systems will spawn hundreds of thousands of threads in order to exploit their massive parallel architectures and thus conventional OS threads are too heavy for that purpose. Several lightweight thread (LWT) libraries have recently appeared offering lighter mechanisms to tackle massive concurrency. In order to examine the suitability of LWTs in high-level runtimes, we develop a set of microbenchmarks consisting of commonly-found patterns in current parallel codes. Moreover, we study the semantics offered by some LWT libraries in order to expose the similarities between different LWT application programming interfaces. This study reveals that a reduced set of LWT functions can be sufficient to cover the common parallel code patterns andthat those LWT libraries perform better than OS threads-based solutions in cases where task and nested parallelism are becoming more popular with new architectures.The researchers from the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló were supported by project TIN2014-53495-R of the MINECO, the Generalitat Valenciana fellowship programme Vali+d 2015, and FEDER.     TaskPoint: sampled simulation of task-based programs

    Sampled simulation is a mature technique for reducing simulation time of single-threaded programs, but it is not directly applicable to simulation of multi-threaded architectures. Recent multi-threaded sampling techniques assume that the workload assigned to each thread does not change across multiple executions of a program. This assumption does not hold for dynamically scheduled task-based programming models. Task-based programming models allow the programmer to specify program segments as tasks which are instantiated many times and scheduled dynamically to available threads. Due to system noise and variation in scheduling decisions, two consecutive executions on the same machine typically result in different instruction streams processed by each thread. In this paper, we propose TaskPoint, a sampled simulation technique for dynamically scheduled task-based programs. We leverage task instances as sampling units and simulate only a fraction of all task instances in detail. Between detailed simulation intervals we employ a novel fast-forward mechanism for dynamically scheduled programs. We evaluate the proposed technique on a set of 19 task-based parallel benchmarks and two different architectures.     Plan Recognition in a Programmer's Apprentice

    This report describes research done at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Support for the Laboratory's artificial intelligence research is provided in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense under the Office of Naval Research contract N00014-75-C-0643.Brief Statement of the Problem: Stated most generally, the proposed research is concerned with understanding and representing the teleological structure of engineered devices. More specifically, I propose to study the teleological structure of computer programs written in LISP which perform a wide range of non-numerical computations. The major theoretical goal of the research is to further develop a formal representation for teleological structure, called plans, which will facilitate both the abstract description of particular programs, and the compilation of a library of programming expertise in the domain of non-numerical computation. Adequacy of the theory will be demonstrated by implementing a system (to eventually become part of a LISP Programmer's Apprentice) which will be able to recognize various plans in LISP programs written by human programmers and thereby generate cogent explanations of how the programs work, including the detection of some programming errors.MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agenc

    Understanding LISP Programs: Towards a Programmer's Apprentice

    Work reported herein was conducted at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology research program supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and monitored by the Office of Naval Research under Contract Number N00014-70-A-0362-0005.Several attempts have been made to produce tools which will help the programmer of complex computer systems. A new approach is proposed which integrates the programmer's intentions, the program code, and the comments, by relating them to a knowledge base of programming techniques. Our research will extend the work of Sussman, Goldstein, and Hewitt on program description and annotation.     Task scheduling techniques for asymmetric multi-core systems

    As performance and energy efficiency have become the main challenges for next-generation high-performance computing, asymmetric multi-core architectures can provide solutions to tackle these issues. Parallel programming models need to be able to suit the needs of such systems and keep on increasing the application’s portability and efficiency. This paper proposes two task scheduling approaches that target asymmetric systems. These dynamic scheduling policies reduce total execution time either by detecting the longest or the critical path of the dynamic task dependency graph of the application, or by finding the earliest executor of a task. They use dynamic scheduling and information discoverable during execution, fact that makes them implementable and functional without the need of off-line profiling. In our evaluation we compare these scheduling approaches with two existing state-of the art heterogeneous schedulers and we track their improvement over a FIFO baseline scheduler.
