    Multi-Criteria Inventory Classification and Root Cause Analysis Based on Logical Analysis of Data

    RÉSUMÉ : La gestion des stocks de pièces de rechange donne un avantage concurrentiel vital dans de nombreuses industries, en passant par les entreprises à forte intensité capitalistique aux entreprises de service. En raison de la quantité élevée d'unités de gestion des stocks (UGS) distinctes, il est presque impossible de contrôler les stocks sur une base unitaire ou de porter la même attention à toutes les pièces. La gestion des stocks de pièces de rechange implique plusieurs intervenants soit les fabricants d'équipement d'origine (FEO), les distributeurs et les clients finaux, ce qui rend la gestion encore plus complexe. Des pièces de rechange critiques mal classées et les ruptures de stocks de pièces critiques ont des conséquences graves. Par conséquent il est essentiel de classifier les stocks de pièces de rechange dans des classes appropriées et d'employer des stratégies de contrôle conformes aux classes respectives. Une classification ABC et certaines techniques de contrôle des stocks sont souvent appliquées pour faciliter la gestion UGS. La gestion des stocks de pièces de rechange a pour but de fournir des pièces de rechange au moment opportun. La classification des pièces de rechange dans des classes de priorité ou de criticité est le fondement même de la gestion à grande échelle d’un assortiment très varié de pièces. L'objectif de la classification est de classer systématiquement les pièces de rechange en différentes classes et ce en fonction de la similitude des pièces tout en considérant leurs caractéristiques exposées sous forme d'attributs. L'analyse ABC traditionnelle basée sur le principe de Pareto est l'une des techniques les plus couramment utilisées pour la classification. Elle se concentre exclusivement sur la valeur annuelle en dollar et néglige d'autres facteurs importants tels que la fiabilité, les délais et la criticité. Par conséquent l’approche multicritères de classification de l'inventaire (MCIC) est nécessaire afin de répondre à ces exigences. Nous proposons une technique d'apprentissage machine automatique et l'analyse logique des données (LAD) pour la classification des stocks de pièces de rechange. Le but de cette étude est d'étendre la méthode classique de classification ABC en utilisant une approche MCIC. Profitant de la supériorité du LAD dans les modèles de transparence et de fiabilité, nous utilisons deux exemples numériques pour évaluer l'utilisation potentielle du LAD afin de détecter des contradictions dans la classification de l'inventaire et de la capacité sur MCIC. Les deux expériences numériques ont démontré que LAD est non seulement capable de classer les stocks mais aussi de détecter et de corriger les observations contradictoires en combinant l’analyse des causes (RCA). La précision du test a été potentiellement amélioré, non seulement par l’utilisation du LAD, mais aussi par d'autres techniques de classification d'apprentissage machine automatique tels que : les réseaux de neurones (ANN), les machines à vecteurs de support (SVM), des k-plus proches voisins (KNN) et Naïve Bayes (NB). Enfin, nous procédons à une analyse statistique afin de confirmer l'amélioration significative de la précision du test pour les nouveaux jeux de données (corrections par LAD) en comparaison aux données d'origine. Ce qui s’avère vrai pour les cinq techniques de classification. Les résultats de l’analyse statistique montrent qu'il n'y a pas eu de différence significative dans la précision du test quant aux cinq techniques de classification utilisées, en comparant les données d’origine avec les nouveaux jeux de données des deux inventaires.----------ABSTRACT : Spare parts inventory management plays a vital role in maintaining competitive advantages in many industries, from capital intensive companies to service networks. Due to the massive quantity of distinct Stock Keeping Units (SKUs), it is almost impossible to control inventory by individual item or pay the same attention to all items. Spare parts inventory management involves all parties, from Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), to distributors and end customers, which makes this management even more challenging. Wrongly classified critical spare parts and the unavailability of those critical items could have severe consequences. Therefore, it is crucial to classify inventory items into classes and employ appropriate control policies conforming to the respective classes. An ABC classification and certain inventory control techniques are often applied to facilitate SKU management. Spare parts inventory management intends to provide the right spare parts at the right time. The classification of spare parts into priority or critical classes is the foundation for managing a large-scale and highly diverse assortment of parts. The purpose of classification is to consistently classify spare parts into different classes based on the similarity of items with respect to their characteristics, which are exhibited as attributes. The traditional ABC analysis, based on Pareto's Principle, is one of the most widely used techniques for classification, which concentrates exclusively on annual dollar usage and overlooks other important factors such as reliability, lead time, and criticality. Therefore, multi-criteria inventory classification (MCIC) methods are required to meet these demands. We propose a pattern-based machine learning technique, the Logical Analysis of Data (LAD), for spare parts inventory classification. The purpose of this study is to expand the classical ABC classification method by using a MCIC approach. Benefiting from the superiority of LAD in pattern transparency and robustness, we use two numerical examples to investigate LAD’s potential usage for detecting inconsistencies in inventory classification and the capability on MCIC. The two numerical experiments have demonstrated that LAD is not only capable of classifying inventory, but also for detecting and correcting inconsistent observations by combining it with the Root Cause Analysis (RCA) procedure. Test accuracy improves potentially not only with the LAD technique, but also with other major machine learning classification techniques, namely artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbours (KNN) and Naïve Bayes (NB). Finally, we conduct a statistical analysis to confirm the significant improvement in test accuracy for new datasets (corrections by LAD) compared to original datasets. This is true for all five classification techniques. The results of statistical tests demonstrate that there is no significant difference in test accuracy in five machine learning techniques, either in the original or the new datasets of both inventories

    Exploring attributes, sequences, and time in Recommender Systems: From classical to Point-of-Interest recommendation

Fecha de lectura: 08-07-2021Since the emergence of the Internet and the spread of digital communications throughout the world, the amount of data stored on the Web has been growing exponentially. In this new digital era, a large number of companies have emerged with the purpose of ltering the information available on the web and provide users with interesting items. The algorithms and models used to recommend these items are called Recommender Systems. These systems are applied to a large number of domains, from music, books, or movies to dating or Point-of-Interest (POI), which is an increasingly popular domain where users receive recommendations of di erent places when they arrive to a city. In this thesis, we focus on exploiting the use of contextual information, especially temporal and sequential data, and apply it in novel ways in both traditional and Point-of-Interest recommendation. We believe that this type of information can be used not only for creating new recommendation models but also for developing new metrics for analyzing the quality of these recommendations. In one of our rst contributions we propose di erent metrics, some of them derived from previously existing frameworks, using this contextual information. Besides, we also propose an intuitive algorithm that is able to provide recommendations to a target user by exploiting the last common interactions with other similar users of the system. At the same time, we conduct a comprehensive review of the algorithms that have been proposed in the area of POI recommendation between 2011 and 2019, identifying the common characteristics and methodologies used. Once this classi cation of the algorithms proposed to date is completed, we design a mechanism to recommend complete routes (not only independent POIs) to users, making use of reranking techniques. In addition, due to the great di culty of making recommendations in the POI domain, we propose the use of data aggregation techniques to use information from di erent cities to generate POI recommendations in a given target city. In the experimental work we present our approaches on di erent datasets belonging to both classical and POI recommendation. The results obtained in these experiments con rm the usefulness of our recommendation proposals, in terms of ranking accuracy and other dimensions like novelty, diversity, and coverage, and the appropriateness of our metrics for analyzing temporal information and biases in the recommendations producedDesde la aparici on de Internet y la difusi on de las redes de comunicaciones en todo el mundo, la cantidad de datos almacenados en la red ha crecido exponencialmente. En esta nueva era digital, han surgido un gran n umero de empresas con el objetivo de ltrar la informaci on disponible en la red y ofrecer a los usuarios art culos interesantes. Los algoritmos y modelos utilizados para recomendar estos art culos reciben el nombre de Sistemas de Recomendaci on. Estos sistemas se aplican a un gran n umero de dominios, desde m usica, libros o pel culas hasta las citas o los Puntos de Inter es (POIs, en ingl es), un dominio cada vez m as popular en el que los usuarios reciben recomendaciones de diferentes lugares cuando llegan a una ciudad. En esta tesis, nos centramos en explotar el uso de la informaci on contextual, especialmente los datos temporales y secuenciales, y aplicarla de forma novedosa tanto en la recomendaci on cl asica como en la recomendaci on de POIs. Creemos que este tipo de informaci on puede utilizarse no s olo para crear nuevos modelos de recomendaci on, sino tambi en para desarrollar nuevas m etricas para analizar la calidad de estas recomendaciones. En una de nuestras primeras contribuciones proponemos diferentes m etricas, algunas derivadas de formulaciones previamente existentes, utilizando esta informaci on contextual. Adem as, proponemos un algoritmo intuitivo que es capaz de proporcionar recomendaciones a un usuario objetivo explotando las ultimas interacciones comunes con otros usuarios similares del sistema. Al mismo tiempo, realizamos una revisi on exhaustiva de los algoritmos que se han propuesto en el a mbito de la recomendaci o n de POIs entre 2011 y 2019, identi cando las caracter sticas comunes y las metodolog as utilizadas. Una vez realizada esta clasi caci on de los algoritmos propuestos hasta la fecha, dise~namos un mecanismo para recomendar rutas completas (no s olo POIs independientes) a los usuarios, haciendo uso de t ecnicas de reranking. Adem as, debido a la gran di cultad de realizar recomendaciones en el ambito de los POIs, proponemos el uso de t ecnicas de agregaci on de datos para utilizar la informaci on de diferentes ciudades y generar recomendaciones de POIs en una determinada ciudad objetivo.     Smart Urban Water Networks

    This book presents the paper form of the Special Issue (SI) on Smart Urban Water Networks. The number and topics of the papers in the SI confirm the growing interest of operators and researchers for the new paradigm of smart networks, as part of the more general smart city. The SI showed that digital information and communication technology (ICT), with the implementation of smart meters and other digital devices, can significantly improve the modelling and the management of urban water networks, contributing to a radical transformation of the traditional paradigm of water utilities. The paper collection in this SI includes different crucial topics such as the reliability, resilience, and performance of water networks, innovative demand management, and the novel challenge of real-time control and operation, along with their implications for cyber-security. The SI collected fourteen papers that provide a wide perspective of solutions, trends, and challenges in the contest of smart urban water networks. Some solutions have already been implemented in pilot sites (i.e., for water network partitioning, cyber-security, and water demand disaggregation and forecasting), while further investigations are required for other methods, e.g., the data-driven approaches for real time control. In all cases, a new deal between academia, industry, and governments must be embraced to start the new era of smart urban water systems

    Tracking the Temporal-Evolution of Supernova Bubbles in Numerical Simulations

    The study of low-dimensional, noisy manifolds embedded in a higher dimensional space has been extremely useful in many applications, from the chemical analysis of multi-phase flows to simulations of galactic mergers. Building a probabilistic model of the manifolds has helped in describing their essential properties and how they vary in space. However, when the manifold is evolving through time, a joint spatio-temporal modelling is needed, in order to fully comprehend its nature. We propose a first-order Markovian process that propagates the spatial probabilistic model of a manifold at fixed time, to its adjacent temporal stages.     Digital life stories: Semi-automatic (auto)biographies within lifelog collections

    Our life stories enable us to reflect upon and share our personal histories. Through emerging digital technologies the possibility of collecting life experiences digitally is increasingly feasible; consequently so is the potential to create a digital counterpart to our personal narratives. In this work, lifelogging tools are used to collect digital artifacts continuously and passively throughout our day. These include images, documents, emails and webpages accessed; texts messages and mobile activity. This range of data when brought together is known as a lifelog. Given the complexity, volume and multimodal nature of such collections, it is clear that there are significant challenges to be addressed in order to achieve coherent and meaningful digital narratives of our events from our life histories. This work investigates the construction of personal digital narratives from lifelog collections. It examines the underlying questions, issues and challenges relating to construction of personal digital narratives from lifelogs. Fundamentally, it addresses how to organize and transform data sampled from an individual’s day-to-day activities into a coherent narrative account. This enquiry is enabled by three 20-month long-term lifelogs collected by participants and produces a narrative system which enables the semi-automatic construction of digital stories from lifelog content. Inspired by probative studies conducted into current practices of curation, from which a set of fundamental requirements are established, this solution employs a 2-dimensional spatial framework for storytelling. It delivers integrated support for the structuring of lifelog content and its distillation into storyform through information retrieval approaches. We describe and contribute flexible algorithmic approaches to achieve both. Finally, this research inquiry yields qualitative and quantitative insights into such digital narratives and their generation, composition and construction. The opportunities for such personal narrative accounts to enable recollection, reminiscence and reflection with the collection owners are established and its benefit in sharing past personal experience experiences is outlined. Finally, in a novel investigation with motivated third parties we demonstrate the opportunities such narrative accounts may have beyond the scope of the collection owner in: personal, societal and cultural explorations, artistic endeavours and as a generational heirloom
