Plenoptische Modellierung und Darstellung komplexer starrer Szenen
Image-Based Rendering is the task of generating novel views from existing images. In this thesis different new methods to solve this problem are presented. These methods are designed to fulfil special goals such as scalability and interactive rendering performance. First, the theory of the Plenoptic Function is introduced as the mathematical foundation of image formation. Then a new taxonomy is introduced to categorise existing methods and an extensive overview of known approaches is given. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the design goals and the requirements with regards to input data. It is concluded that for perspectively correct image generation from sparse spatial sampling geometry information about the scene is necessary. This leads to the design of three different Image-Based Rendering methods. The rendering results are analysed on different data sets. Stereoscopic high dynamic range imaging
Two modern technologies show promise to dramatically increase immersion in
virtual environments. Stereoscopic imaging captures two images representing
the views of both eyes and allows for better depth perception. High dynamic
range (HDR) imaging accurately represents real world lighting as opposed to
traditional low dynamic range (LDR) imaging. HDR provides a better contrast
and more natural looking scenes. The combination of the two technologies in
order to gain advantages of both has been, until now, mostly unexplored due to
the current limitations in the imaging pipeline. This thesis reviews both fields,
proposes stereoscopic high dynamic range (SHDR) imaging pipeline outlining the
challenges that need to be resolved to enable SHDR and focuses on capture and
compression aspects of that pipeline.
The problems of capturing SHDR images that would potentially require two
HDR cameras and introduce ghosting, are mitigated by capturing an HDR and
LDR pair and using it to generate SHDR images. A detailed user study compared
four different methods of generating SHDR images. Results demonstrated that
one of the methods may produce images perceptually indistinguishable from the
ground truth.
Insights obtained while developing static image operators guided the design
of SHDR video techniques. Three methods for generating SHDR video from an
HDR-LDR video pair are proposed and compared to the ground truth SHDR
videos. Results showed little overall error and identified a method with the least
error.
Once captured, SHDR content needs to be efficiently compressed. Five SHDR
compression methods that are backward compatible are presented. The proposed
methods can encode SHDR content to little more than that of a traditional single
LDR image (18% larger for one method) and the backward compatibility property
encourages early adoption of the format.
The work presented in this thesis has introduced and advanced capture and
compression methods for the adoption of SHDR imaging. In general, this research
paves the way for a novel field of SHDR imaging which should lead to improved
and more realistic representation of captured scenes

Despite the emergence of new HDR acquisition methods, the multiple exposure technique (MET) is still the most popular one. The application of MET on dynamic scenes is a challenging task due to the diversity of motion patterns and uncontrollable factors such as sensor noise, scene occlusion and performance concerns on some platforms with limited computational capability. Currently, there are already more than 50 deghosting algorithms proposed for artifact-free HDR imaging of dynamic scenes and it is expected that this number will grow in the future. Due to the large number of algorithms, it is a difficult and time-consuming task to conduct subjective experiments for benchmarking recently proposed algorithms. In this thesis, first, a taxonomy of HDR deghosting methods and the key characteristics of each group of algorithms are introduced. Next, the potential artifacts which are observed frequently in the outputs of HDR deghosting algorithms are defined and an objective HDR image deghosting quality metric is presented. Power Quality
Electrical power is becoming one of the most dominant factors in our society. Power
generation, transmission, distribution and usage are undergoing signifi cant changes
that will aff ect the electrical quality and performance needs of our 21st century industry.
One major aspect of electrical power is its quality and stability – or so called Power
Quality.
The view on Power Quality did change over the past few years. It seems that Power
Quality is becoming a more important term in the academic world dealing with electrical
power, and it is becoming more visible in all areas of commerce and industry, because
of the ever increasing industry automation using sensitive electrical equipment
on one hand and due to the dramatic change of our global electrical infrastructure on
the other.
For the past century, grid stability was maintained with a limited amount of major
generators that have a large amount of rotational inertia. And the rate of change of
phase angle is slow. Unfortunately, this does not work anymore with renewable energy
sources adding their share to the grid like wind turbines or PV modules. Although the
basic idea to use renewable energies is great and will be our path into the next century,
it comes with a curse for the power grid as power fl ow stability will suff er.
It is not only the source side that is about to change. We have also seen signifi cant
changes on the load side as well. Industry is using machines and electrical products
such as AC drives or PLCs that are sensitive to the slightest change of power quality,
and we at home use more and more electrical products with switching power supplies
or starting to plug in our electric cars to charge batt eries. In addition, many of us
have begun installing our own distributed generation systems on our rooft ops using
the latest solar panels. So we did look for a way to address this severe impact on our
distribution network. To match supply and demand, we are about to create a new, intelligent
and self-healing electric power infrastructure. The Smart Grid. The basic idea
is to maintain the necessary balance between generators and loads on a grid. In other
words, to make sure we have a good grid balance at all times. But the key question that
you should ask yourself is: Does it also improve Power Quality? Probably not!
Further on, the way how Power Quality is measured is going to be changed. Traditionally,
each country had its own Power Quality standards and defi ned its own power
quality instrument requirements. But more and more international harmonization efforts
can be seen. Such as IEC 61000-4-30, which is an excellent standard that ensures
that all compliant power quality instruments, regardless of manufacturer, will produce of measurement instruments so that they can also be used in volume applications and
even directly embedded into sensitive loads. But work still has to be done. We still use
Power Quality standards that have been writt en decades ago and don’t match today’s
technology any more, such as fl icker standards that use parameters that have been defi
ned by the behavior of 60-watt incandescent light bulbs, which are becoming extinct.
Almost all experts are in agreement - although we will see an improvement in metering
and control of the power fl ow, Power Quality will suff er. This book will give an
overview of how power quality might impact our lives today and tomorrow, introduce
new ways to monitor power quality and inform us about interesting possibilities to
mitigate power quality problems.
Regardless of any enhancements of the power grid, “Power Quality is just compatibility”
like my good old friend and teacher Alex McEachern used to say.
Power Quality will always remain an economic compromise between supply and load.
The power available on the grid must be suffi ciently clean for the loads to operate correctly,
and the loads must be suffi ciently strong to tolerate normal disturbances on the
grid
Variable Block Size Motion Compensation In The Redundant Wavelet Domain
Video is one of the most powerful forms of multimedia because of the extensive information it delivers. Video sequences are highly correlated both temporally and spatially, a fact which makes the compression of video possible. Modern video systems employ motion estimation and motion compensation (ME/MC) to de-correlate a video sequence temporally. ME/MC forms a prediction of the current frame using the frames which have been already encoded. Consequently, one needs to transmit the corresponding residual image instead of the original frame, as well as a set of motion vectors which describe the scene motion as observed at the encoder. The redundant wavelet transform (RDWT) provides several advantages over the conventional wavelet transform (DWT). The RDWT overcomes the shift invariant problem in DWT. Moreover, RDWT retains all the phase information of wavelet coefficients and provides multiple prediction possibilities for ME/MC in wavelet domain. The general idea of variable size block motion compensation (VSBMC) technique is to partition a frame in such a way that regions with uniform translational motions are divided into larger blocks while those containing complicated motions into smaller blocks, leading to an adaptive distribution of motion vectors (MV) across the frame. The research proposed new adaptive partitioning schemes and decision criteria in RDWT that utilize more effectively the motion content of a frame in terms of various block sizes. The research also proposed a selective subpixel accuracy algorithm for the motion vector using a multiband approach. The selective subpixel accuracy reduces the computations produced by the conventional subpixel algorithm while maintaining the same accuracy. In addition, the method of overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) is used to reduce blocking artifacts. Finally, the research extends the applications of the proposed VSBMC to the 3D video sequences. The experimental results obtained here have shown that VSBMC in the RDWT domain can be a powerful tool for video compression

Creating photo-realistic images has been one of the major goals in computer graphics since its early days. Instead of modeling the complexity of nature with standard modeling tools, image-based approaches aim at exploiting real-world footage directly,as they are photo-realistic by definition. A drawback of these approaches has always been that the composition or combination of different sources is a non-trivial task, often resulting in annoying visible artifacts. In this thesis we focus on different techniques to diminish visible artifacts when combining multiple images in a common image domain. The results are either novel images, when dealing with the composition task of multiple images, or novel video sequences rendered in real-time, when dealing with video footage from multiple cameras.Fotorealismus ist seit jeher eines der großen Ziele in der Computergrafik. Anstatt die Komplexität der Natur mit standardisierten Modellierungswerkzeugen nachzubauen, gehen bildbasierte Ansätze den umgekehrten Weg und verwenden reale Bildaufnahmen zur Modellierung, da diese bereits per Definition fotorealistisch sind. Ein Nachteil dieser Variante ist jedoch, dass die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Quellbilder eine nichttriviale Aufgabe darstellt und häufig unangenehm auffallende Artefakte im erzeugten Bild nach sich zieht. In dieser Dissertation werden verschiedene Ansätze verfolgt, um Artefakte zu verhindern oder abzuschwächen, welche durch die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Bilder in einer gemeinsamen Bilddomäne entstehen. Im Ergebnis liefern die vorgestellten Verfahren
neue Bilder oder neue Ansichten einer Bildsammlung oder Videosequenz, je nachdem, ob die jeweilige Aufgabe die Komposition mehrerer Bilder ist oder die Kombination mehrerer Videos verschiedener Kameras darstellt
