Prototyping Formal System Models with Active Objects
We propose active object languages as a development tool for formal system
models of distributed systems. Additionally to a formalization based on a term
rewriting system, we use established Software Engineering concepts, including
software product lines and object orientation that come with extensive tool
support. We illustrate our modeling approach by prototyping a weak memory
model. The resulting executable model is modular and has clear interfaces
between communicating participants through object-oriented modeling.
Relaxations of the basic memory model are expressed as self-contained variants
of a software product line. As a modeling language we use the formal active
object language ABS which comes with an extensive tool set. This permits rapid
formalization of core ideas, early validity checks in terms of formal invariant
proofs, and debugging support by executing test runs. Hence, our approach

Quantum-secured imaging
We have built an imaging system that uses a photon's position or
time-of-flight information to image an object, while using the photon's
polarization for security. This ability allows us to obtain an image which is
secure against an attack in which the object being imaged intercepts and
resends the imaging photons with modified information. Popularly known as
"jamming," this type of attack is commonly directed at active imaging systems
such as radar. In order to jam our imaging system, the object must disturb the
delicate quantum state of the imaging photons, thus introducing statistical

Active object systems
An active object system is a transition-based object-oriented system suitable for the design of various concurrent systems. An AOS consists of a collection of interacting objects, where the behavior of each object is determined by the transition statements provided in the class of that object. A transition statement is a condition-action pair, an equational assignment statement, or an event routine. The transition statements provided for each object can access, besides the state of that object, the states of the other objects known to it through its interface variables. Interface variables are bound to objects when objects are instantiated so that desired connections among objects are established. The major benefit of the AOS approach is that an active system can be hierarchically composed from its active software components as if it were a hardware system. An AOS provides better encapsulation and more flexible communication protocols than ordinary object oriented systems, since control within an AOS is localized
Composing concurrent objects
Adopting the object-oriented paradigm for the development of large and complex software systems offers several advantages, of which increased extensibility and reusability are the most prominent ones. The object-oriented model is also quite suitable for modelling concurrent systems. However, it appears that extensibility and reusability of concurrent applications is far from trivial. In addition, very little attention has been paid by the conventional object-oriented development methodologies to the analysis and design of\ud
synchronisation constraints for concurrent objects.\ud
To address these problems, in this thesis the framework of composition-filters, an extension to the object-oriented model, is adopted. An analysis is presented of the problems involved in reusing and extending concurrent objects, in particular the so-called inheritance anomalies. Based on this analysis, a set of criteria for effective extensible concurrent objectoriented\ud
programming languages is formulated.\ud
The thesis introduces techniques for the creation of concurrency and the synchronisation of concurrent activities, fully integrated within the (object-oriented) composition-filters model. Important properties of the proposed object model are: all objects are -potentially- active, intra-object concurrency is supported and synchronisation specifications are fully separated\ud
from method implementations. The applicability and expressive power of the proposed technique are demonstrated, and it is shown how reusability and extensibility of concurrent objects are achieved
Refinement Types as Higher Order Dependency Pairs
Refinement types are a well-studied manner of performing in-depth analysis on
functional programs. The dependency pair method is a very powerful method used
to prove termination of rewrite systems; however its extension to higher order
rewrite systems is still the object of active research. We observe that a
variant of refinement types allow us to express a form of higher-order
dependency pair criterion that only uses information at the type level, and we
prove the correctness of this criterion
OBJECTIVE: a benchmark for object-oriented active database systems

In this paper, we describe the OBJECTIVE Benchmark for object-oriented ADBMSs, and present experimental results from its implementation in an active database system prototype. Combined object recognition approaches for mobile robotics
There are numerous solutions to simple object recognition problems when the machine is operating under strict environmental conditions (such as lighting). Object recognition in real-world environments poses greater difficulty however. Ideally mobile robots will function in real-world environments without the aid of fiduciary identifiers. More robust methods are therefore needed to perform object recognition reliably. A combined approach of multiple techniques improves recognition results. Active vision and peripheral-foveal vision—systems that are designed to improve the information gathered for the purposes of object recognition—are examined. In addition to active vision and peripheral-foveal vision, five object recognition methods that either make use of some form of active vision or could leverage active vision and/or peripheral-foveal vision systems are also investigated: affine-invariant image patches, perceptual organization, 3D morphable models (3DMMs), active viewpoint, and adaptive color segmentation. The current state-of-the-art in these areas of vision research and observations on areas of future research are presented. Examples of state-of-theart methods employed in other vision applications that have not been used for object recognition are also mentioned.
