    EyeRIS: A General-Purpose System for Eye Movement Contingent Display Control

    In experimental studies of visual performance, the need often emerges to modify the stimulus according to the eye movements perfonncd by the subject. The methodology of Eye Movement-Contingent Display (EMCD) enables accurate control of the position and motion of the stimulus on the retina. EMCD procedures have been used successfully in many areas of vision science, including studies of visual attention, eye movements, and physiological characterization of neuronal response properties. Unfortunately, the difficulty of real-time programming and the unavailability of flexible and economical systems that can be easily adapted to the diversity of experimental needs and laboratory setups have prevented the widespread use of EMCD control. This paper describes EyeRIS, a general-purpose system for performing EMCD experiments on a Windows computer. Based on a digital signal processor with analog and digital interfaces, this integrated hardware and software system is responsible for sampling and processing oculomotor signals and subject responses and modifying the stimulus displayed on a CRT according to the gaze-contingent procedure specified by the experimenter. EyeRIS is designed to update the stimulus within a delay of 10 ms. To thoroughly evaluate EyeRIS' perforltlancc, this study (a) examines the response of the system in a number of EMCD procedures and computational benchmarking tests, (b) compares the accuracy of implementation of one particular EMCD procedure, retinal stabilization, to that produced by a standard tool used for this task, and (c) examines EyeRIS' performance in one of the many EMCD procedures that cannot be executed by means of any other currently available device.National Institute of Health (EY15732-01

    Towards an understanding of the rapid decline of the cosmic star formation rate

    We present a first analysis of deep 24 micron observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of nearly 1500 galaxies in a thin redshift slice, 0.65<z<0.75. We combine the infrared data with redshifts, rest-frame luminosities, and colors from COMBO-17, and with morphologies from Hubble Space Telescope images collected by the GEMS and GOODS projects. To characterize the decline in star-formation rate (SFR) since z~0.7, we estimate the total thermal infrared (IR) luminosities, SFRs, and stellar masses for the galaxies in this sample. At z~0.7, nearly 40% of intermediate and high-mass galaxies (with stellar masses >2x10^10 solar masses) are undergoing a period of intense star formation above their past-averaged SFR. In contrast, less than 1% of equally-massive galaxies in the local universe have similarly intense star formation activity. Morphologically-undisturbed galaxies dominate the total infrared luminosity density and SFR density: at z~0.7, more than half of the intensely star-forming galaxies have spiral morphologies, whereas less than \~30% are strongly interacting. Thus, a decline in major-merger rate is not the underlying cause of the rapid decline in cosmic SFR since z~0.7. Physical properties that do not strongly affect galaxy morphology - for example, gas consumption and weak interactions with small satellite galaxies - appear to be responsible.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal 1 June 2005. 14 pages with 8 embedded figure

    Fast traffic sign recognition using color segmentation and deep convolutional networks

    The use of Computer Vision techniques for the automatic recognition of road signs is fundamental for the development of intelli- gent vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems. In this paper, we describe a procedure based on color segmentation, Histogram of Ori- ented Gradients (HOG), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for detecting and classifying road signs. Detection is speeded up by a pre- processing step to reduce the search space, while classication is carried out by using a Deep Learning technique. A quantitative evaluation of the proposed approach has been conducted on the well-known German Traf- c Sign data set and on the novel Data set of Italian Trac Signs (DITS), which is publicly available and contains challenging sequences captured in adverse weather conditions and in an urban scenario at night-time. Experimental results demonstrate the eectiveness of the proposed ap- proach in terms of both classication accuracy and computational speed

    Object-based 2D-to-3D video conversion for effective stereoscopic content generation in 3D-TV applications

    Three-dimensional television (3D-TV) has gained increasing popularity in the broadcasting domain, as it enables enhanced viewing experiences in comparison to conventional two-dimensional (2D) TV. However, its application has been constrained due to the lack of essential contents, i.e., stereoscopic videos. To alleviate such content shortage, an economical and practical solution is to reuse the huge media resources that are available in monoscopic 2D and convert them to stereoscopic 3D. Although stereoscopic video can be generated from monoscopic sequences using depth measurements extracted from cues like focus blur, motion and size, the quality of the resulting video may be poor as such measurements are usually arbitrarily defined and appear inconsistent with the real scenes. To help solve this problem, a novel method for object-based stereoscopic video generation is proposed which features i) optical-flow based occlusion reasoning in determining depth ordinal, ii) object segmentation using improved region-growing from masks of determined depth layers, and iii) a hybrid depth estimation scheme using content-based matching (inside a small library of true stereo image pairs) and depth-ordinal based regularization. Comprehensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of our proposed 2D-to-3D conversion method in generating stereoscopic videos of consistent depth measurements for 3D-TV applications

    Numerical Fitting-based Likelihood Calculation to Speed up the Particle Filter

    The likelihood calculation of a vast number of particles is the computational bottleneck for the particle filter in applications where the observation information is rich. For fast computing the likelihood of particles, a numerical fitting approach is proposed to construct the Likelihood Probability Density Function (Li-PDF) by using a comparably small number of so-called fulcrums. The likelihood of particles is thereby analytically inferred, explicitly or implicitly, based on the Li-PDF instead of directly computed by utilizing the observation, which can significantly reduce the computation and enables real time filtering. The proposed approach guarantees the estimation quality when an appropriate fitting function and properly distributed fulcrums are used. The details for construction of the fitting function and fulcrums are addressed respectively in detail. In particular, to deal with multivariate fitting, the nonparametric kernel density estimator is presented which is flexible and convenient for implicit Li-PDF implementation. Simulation comparison with a variety of existing approaches on a benchmark 1-dimensional model and multi-dimensional robot localization and visual tracking demonstrate the validity of our approach.Comment: 42 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables and 1 appendix.
