    Hyperspectral Imaging from Ground Based Mobile Platforms and Applications in Precision Agriculture

    This thesis focuses on the use of line scanning hyperspectral sensors on mobile ground based platforms and applying them to agricultural applications. First this work deals with the geometric and radiometric calibration and correction of acquired hyperspectral data. When operating at low altitudes, changing lighting conditions are common and inevitable, complicating the retrieval of a surface's reflectance, which is solely a function of its physical structure and chemical composition. Therefore, this thesis contributes the evaluation of an approach to compensate for changes in illumination and obtain reflectance that is less labour intensive than traditional empirical methods. Convenient field protocols are produced that only require a representative set of illumination and reflectance spectral samples. In addition, a method for determining a line scanning camera's rigid 6 degree of freedom (DOF) offset and uncertainty with respect to a navigation system is developed, enabling accurate georegistration and sensor fusion. The thesis then applies the data captured from the platform to two different agricultural applications. The first is a self-supervised weed detection framework that allows training of a per-pixel classifier using hyperspectral data without manual labelling. The experiments support the effectiveness of the framework, rivalling classifiers trained on hand labelled training data. Then the thesis demonstrates the mapping of mango maturity using hyperspectral data on an orchard wide scale using efficient image scanning techniques, which is a world first result. A novel classification, regression and mapping pipeline is proposed to generate per tree mango maturity averages. The results confirm that maturity prediction in mango orchards is possible in natural daylight using a hyperspectral camera, despite complex micro-illumination-climates under the canopy

    Multitemporal assessment of crop parameters using multisensorial flying platforms

    UAV sensors suitable for precision farming (Sony NEX-5n RGB camera; Canon Powershot modified to infrared sensitivity; MCA6 Tetracam; UAV spectrometer) were compared over differently treated grassland. The high resolution infrared and RGB camera allows spatial analysis of vegetation cover while the UAV spectrometer enables detailed analysis of spectral reflectance at single points. The high spatial and six-band spectral resolution of the MCA6 combines the opportunities of spatial and spectral analysis, but requires huge calibration efforts to acquire reliable data. All investigated systems were able to provide useful information in different distinct research areas of interest in the spatial or spectral domain. The UAV spectrometer was further used to assess multiangular reflectance patterns of wheat. By flying the UAV in a hemispherical path and directing the spectrometer towards the center of this hemisphere, the system acts like a large goniometer. Other than ground based goniometers, this novel method allows huge diameters without any need for infrastructures on the ground. Our experimental results shows good agreement with models and other goniometers, proving the approach valid. UAVs are capable of providing airborne data with a high spatial and temporal resolution due to their flexible and easy use. This was demonstrated in a two year survey. A high resolution RGB camera was flown every week over experimental plots of barley. From the RGB imagery a time series of the barley development was created using the color values. From this analysis we could track differences in the growth of multiple seeding densities and identify events of plant development such as ear pushing. These results lead towards promising practical applications that could be used in breeding for the phenotyping of crop varieties or in the scope of precision farming. With the advent of high endurance UAVs such as airships and the development of better light weight sensors, an exciting future for remote sensing from UAV in agriculture is expected

    Assessing spring phenology of a temperate woodland : a multiscale comparison of ground, unmanned aerial vehicle and Landsat satellite observations

    PhD ThesisVegetation phenology is the study of plant natural life cycle stages. Plant phenological events are related to carbon, energy and water cycles within terrestrial ecosystems, operating from local to global scales. As plant phenology events are highly sensitive to climate fluctuations, the timing of these events has been used as an independent indicator of climate change. The monitoring of forest phenology in a cost-effective manner, at a fine spatial scale and over relatively large areas remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) appear to be a potential new platform for forest phenology monitoring. The aim of this research is to assess the potential of UAV data to track the temporal dynamics of spring phenology, from the individual tree to woodland scale, and to cross-compare UAV results against ground and satellite observations, in order to better understand characteristics of UAV data and assess potential for use in validation of satellite-derived phenology. A time series of UAV data were acquired in tandem with an intensive ground campaign during the spring season of 2015, over Hanging Leaves Wood, Northumberland, UK. The radiometric quality of the UAV imagery acquired by two consumer-grade cameras was assessed, in terms of the ability to retrieve reflectance and Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and successfully validated against ground (0.84≤R2≥0.96) and Landsat (0.73≤R2≥0.89) measurements, but only NDVI resulted in stable time series. The start (SOS), middle (MOS) and end (EOS) of spring season dates were estimated at an individual tree-level using UAV time series of NDVI and Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC), with GCC resulting in a clearer and stronger seasonal signal at a tree crown scale. UAV-derived SOS could be predicted more accurately than MOS and EOS, with an accuracy of less than 1 week for deciduous woodland and within 2 weeks for evergreen. The UAV data were used to map phenological events for individual trees across the whole woodland, demonstrating that contrasting canopy phenological events can occur within the extent of a single Landsat pixel. This accounted for the poor relationships found between UAV- and Landsat-derived phenometrics (R2<0.45) in this study. An opportunity is now available to track very fine scale land surface changes over contiguous vegetation communities, information which could improve characterization of vegetation phenology at multiple scales.The Science without Borders program, managed by CAPES-Brazil (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior)

    2015 Oil Observing Tools: A Workshop Report

    Since 2010, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have provided satellite-based pollution surveillance in United States waters to regulatory agencies such as the United States Coast Guard (USCG). These technologies provide agencies with useful information regarding possible oil discharges. Unfortunately, there has been confusion as to how to interpret the images collected by these satellites and other aerial platforms, which can generate misunderstandings during spill events. Remote sensor packages on aircraft and satellites have advantages and disadvantages vis-à-vis human observers, because they do not “see” features or surface oil the same way. In order to improve observation capabilities during oil spills, applicable technologies must be identified, and then evaluated with respect to their advantages and disadvantages for the incident. In addition, differences between sensors (e.g., visual, IR, multispectral sensors, radar) and platform packages (e.g., manned/unmanned aircraft, satellites) must be understood so that reasonable approaches can be made if applicable and then any data must be correctly interpreted for decision support. NOAA convened an Oil Observing Tools Workshop to focus on the above actions and identify training gaps for oil spill observers and remote sensing interpretation to improve future oil surveillance, observation, and mapping during spills. The Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) assisted NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) with this effort. The workshop was held on October 20-22, 2015 at NOAA’s Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center in Mobile, AL. The expected outcome of the workshop was an improved understanding, and greater use of technology to map and assess oil slicks during actual spill events. Specific workshop objectives included: •Identify new developments in oil observing technologies useful for real-time (or near real-time) mapping of spilled oil during emergency events. •Identify merits and limitations of current technologies and their usefulness to emergency response mapping of oil and reliable prediction of oil surface transport and trajectory forecasts.Current technologies include: the traditional human aerial observer, unmanned aircraft surveillance systems, aircraft with specialized senor packages, and satellite earth observing systems. •Assess training needs for visual observation (human observers with cameras) and sensor technologies (including satellites) to build skills and enhance proper interpretation for decision support during actual events

    Integration of Vessel-Based Hyperspectral Scanning and 3D-Photogrammetry for Mobile Mapping of Steep Coastal Cliffs in the Arctic

    Remote and extreme regions such as in the Arctic remain a challenging ground for geological mapping and mineral exploration. Coastal cliffs are often the only major well-exposed outcrops, but are mostly not observable by air/spaceborne nadir remote sensing sensors. Current outcrop mapping efforts rely on the interpretation of Terrestrial Laser Scanning and oblique photogrammetry, which have inadequate spectral resolution to allow for detection of subtle lithological differences. This study aims to integrate 3D-photogrammetry with vessel-based hyperspectral imaging to complement geological outcrop models with quantitative information regarding mineral variations and thus enables the differentiation of barren rocks from potential economic ore deposits. We propose an innovative workflow based on: (1) the correction of hyperspectral images by eliminating the distortion effects originating from the periodic movements of the vessel; (2) lithological mapping based on spectral information; and (3) accurate 3D integration of spectral products with photogrammetric terrain data. The method is tested using experimental data acquired from near-vertical cliff sections in two parts of Greenland, in Karrat (Central West) and Søndre Strømfjord (South West). Root-Mean-Square Error of (6.7, 8.4) pixels for Karrat and (3.9, 4.5) pixels for Søndre Strømfjord in X and Y directions demonstrate the geometric accuracy of final 3D products and allow a precise mapping of the targets identified using the hyperspectral data contents. This study highlights the potential of using other operational mobile platforms (e.g., unmanned systems) for regional mineral mapping based on horizontal viewing geometry and multi-source and multi-scale data fusion approaches

    Are we there yet? A review and assessment of archaeological passive airborne optical imaging approaches in the light of landscape archaeology

    Archaeologists often rely on passive airborne optical remote sensing to deliver some of the core data for (European) landscape archaeology projects. Despite the many technological and theoretical evolutions that have characterised this field of archaeology, the dominant aerial photographic surveys, but also less common approaches to archaeological airborne reconnaissance, still suffer from many inherent biases imposed by sub-par sampling strategies, cost, instrument availability and post-processing issues. This paper starts with the concept of landscape (archaeology) and uses it to frame archaeological airborne remote sensing. After introducing the need for bias reduction when sampling an already distorted archaeological population and expanding on the ‘theory-neutral’ claim of aerial survey, the paper presents eight key characteristics that all have the potential to increase or decrease the subjectivity and bias when collecting airborne optical imagery with passive sensors. Within this setting, the paper then offers some technological-methodological reflection on the various passive airborne optical imaging solutions that landscape archaeology has come to rely upon in the past decades. In doing so, it calls into question the effectiveness and suitability of these highly subjective approaches for landscape archaeology. Finally, the paper proposes a new, more objective approach to aerial optical image acquisition with passive sensors. In the discussion, the text argues that the suggested exhaustive (or total) airborne sampling of the preserved archaeological record might transcend particular theoretical paradigms, while the data generated could span various interpretational perspectives and oppositional analytical approaches in landscape archaeology
