In this paper, we describe the work of the EC-funded DigCurV project. We examine the context of the project, the methods and findings of its extensive survey work, and the development of proposed frameworks for evaluating and delivering a digital curation curriculum
Visual Molecular Dynamics Investigations of the Impact of Hydrophobic Nanoparticles on Prognosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and Cancers
The possible impact of hydrophobic lectin nanoparticles on the prognosis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cancers was investigated by Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) computer modeling programs available from the Beckmann Advanced Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana. Our results indicate the possibility of impeding pathological aggregation of certain proteins such as modified tau- or beta-amyloid that are currently being considered as possible causes of Alzheimer's disease. VMD programs serve as useful tools for investigation hydrophobic protein aggregation that may play a role in aging of human populations
Design of teacher assistance tools in an exploratory learning environment for algebraic generalisation
The MiGen project is designing and developing an intelligent exploratory environment to support 11-14 year-old students in their learning of algebraic generalisation. Deployed within the classroom, the system also provides tools to assist teachers in monitoring students' activities and progress. This paper describes the architectural design of these Teacher Assistance tools and gives a detailed description of one such tool, focussing in particular on the research challenges faced, and the technologies and approaches chosen to implement the necessary functionalities given the context of the project
Scoping review on interventions to improve adherence to reporting guidelines in health research
Objectives The goal of this study is to identify, analyse and classify interventions to improve adherence to reporting guidelines in order to obtain a wide picture of how the problem of enhancing the completeness of reporting of biomedical literature has been tackled so far.
Design Scoping review.
Search strategy We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases and conducted a grey literature search for (1) studies evaluating interventions to improve adherence to reporting guidelines in health research and (2) other types of references describing interventions that have been performed or suggested but never evaluated. The characteristics and effect of the evaluated interventions were analysed. Moreover, we explored the rationale of the interventions identified and determined the existing gaps in research on the evaluation of interventions to improve adherence to reporting guidelines.
Results 109 references containing 31 interventions (11 evaluated) were included. These were grouped into five categories: (1) training on the use of reporting guidelines, (2) improving understanding, (3) encouraging adherence, (4) checking adherence and providing feedback, and (5) involvement of experts. Additionally, we identified lack of evaluated interventions (1) on training on the use of reporting guidelines and improving their understanding, (2) at early stages of research and (3) after the final acceptance of the manuscript.
Conclusions This scoping review identified a wide range of strategies to improve adherence to reporting guidelines that can be taken by different stakeholders. Additional research is needed to assess the effectiveness of many of these interventionsPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Teacher Evaluations in the Special Education Setting: Voices from the Field
National policy mandates have placed greater accountability on districts and schools to improve the outcomes of every student, including students with disabilities. Teacher evaluation systems that accurately identify effective teachers and their impact on student learning have resulted in the widespread design and implementation of new teacher evaluation systems. Nevertheless, limited exploration related to the evaluation of special education teachers exists. Using a qualitative, multi-case study research design, we sought to gain insight into the perceptions and experiences of special education teachers and administrators to better understand (a) the relationship between teacher evaluation and teacher effectiveness; (b) the ways in which educators approach the challenges of applying teacher evaluation systems for special education teachers; and (c) the ways in which teacher evaluation processes support the professional growth and development of special education teachers. The challenges involved in evaluating special education teachers with a uniform teacher evaluation protocol instrument are presented. The need to be able to accurately appraise special education teachers within an inclusive classroom setting, apply criteria from the observation protocol to special education students, and lack of appraisers� knowledge of the roles and expertise of special education teachers were identified. metaSHARK: software for automated metabolic network prediction from DNA sequence and its application to the genomes of Plasmodium falciparum and Eimeria tenella
The metabolic SearcH And Reconstruction Kit
(metaSHARK) is a new fully automated software package
for the detection of enzyme-encoding genes
within unannotated genome data and their visualization
in the context of the surrounding metabolic network.
The gene detection package (SHARKhunt) runs
on a Linux systemand requires only a set of raw DNA
sequences (genomic, expressed sequence tag and/
or genome survey sequence) as input. Its output
may be uploaded to our web-based visualization
tool (SHARKview) for exploring and comparing data
from different organisms. We first demonstrate the
utility of the software by comparing its results for
the raw Plasmodium falciparum genome with the
manual annotations available at the PlasmoDB and
PlasmoCyc websites. We then apply SHARKhunt to
the unannotated genome sequences of the coccidian
parasite Eimeria tenella and observe that, at an
E-value cut-off of 10(-20), our software makes 142
additional assertions of enzymatic function compared
with a recent annotation package working
with translated open reading frame sequences. The
ability of the software to cope with low levels of
sequence coverage is investigated by analyzing
assemblies of the E.tenella genome at estimated
coverages from 0.5x to 7.5x. Lastly, as an example
of how metaSHARK can be used to evaluate the
genomic evidence for specific metabolic pathways,
we present a study of coenzyme A biosynthesis in
P.falciparum and E.tenella
