    Adaptive Algorithms for Intelligent Acoustic Interfaces

    Modern speech communications are evolving towards a new direction which involves users in a more perceptive way. That is the immersive experience, which may be considered as the “last-mile” problem of telecommunications. One of the main feature of immersive communications is the distant-talking, i.e. the hands-free (in the broad sense) speech communications without bodyworn or tethered microphones that takes place in a multisource environment where interfering signals may degrade the communication quality and the intelligibility of the desired speech source. In order to preserve speech quality intelligent acoustic interfaces may be used. An intelligent acoustic interface may comprise multiple microphones and loudspeakers and its peculiarity is to model the acoustic channel in order to adapt to user requirements and to environment conditions. This is the reason why intelligent acoustic interfaces are based on adaptive filtering algorithms. The acoustic path modelling entails a set of problems which have to be taken into account in designing an adaptive filtering algorithm. Such problems may be basically generated by a linear or a nonlinear process and can be tackled respectively by linear or nonlinear adaptive algorithms. In this work we consider such modelling problems and we propose novel effective adaptive algorithms that allow acoustic interfaces to be robust against any interfering signals, thus preserving the perceived quality of desired speech signals. As regards linear adaptive algorithms, a class of adaptive filters based on the sparse nature of the acoustic impulse response has been recently proposed. We adopt such class of adaptive filters, named proportionate adaptive filters, and derive a general framework from which it is possible to derive any linear adaptive algorithm. Using such framework we also propose some efficient proportionate adaptive algorithms, expressly designed to tackle problems of a linear nature. On the other side, in order to address problems deriving from a nonlinear process, we propose a novel filtering model which performs a nonlinear transformations by means of functional links. Using such nonlinear model, we propose functional link adaptive filters which provide an efficient solution to the modelling of a nonlinear acoustic channel. Finally, we introduce robust filtering architectures based on adaptive combinations of filters that allow acoustic interfaces to more effectively adapt to environment conditions, thus providing a powerful mean to immersive speech communications

    Adaptive polynomial filters

    Journal ArticleWhile linear filter are useful in a large number of applications and relatively simple from conceptual and implementational view points. there are many practical situations that require nonlinear processing of the signals involved. This article explains adaptive nonlinear filters equipped with polynomial models of nonlinearity. The polynomial systems considered are those nonlinear systems whose output signals can be related to the input signals through a truncated Volterra series expansion, or a recursive nonlinear difference equation. The Volterra series expansion can model a large class of nonlinear systems and is attractive in filtering applications because the expansion is a linear combination of nonlinear functions of the input signal. The basic ideas behind the development of gradient and recursive least-squares adaptive Volterra filters are first discussed. followed by adaptive algorithms using system models involving recursive nonlinear difference equations. Such systems are attractive because they may be able to approximate many nonlinear systems with great parsimony in the use pf coefficients. Also discussed are current research trends and new results and problem areas associated with these nonlinear filters. A lattice structure for polynomial models is also described

    Various nonlinear models and their identification, equalization and linearization

    System identification is a pre-requisite to analysis of a dynamic system and design of an appropriate controller for improving its performance. The more accurate the mathematical model identified for a system, the more effective will be the controller designed for it. The identification of nonlinear systems is a topic which has received considerable attention over the last two decades. Generally speaking, when it is difficult to model practical systems by mathematical analysis method, system identification may be an efficient way to overcome the shortage of mechanism analysis method. The goal of the modeling is to find a simple and efficient model which is in accord with the practical system. In many cases, linear models are not suitable to present these systems and nonlinear models have to be considered. Since there are nonlinear effects in practical systems, e.g. harmonic generation, intermediation, desensitization, gain expansion and chaos, we can infer that most control systems are nonlinear. Nonlinear models are more widely used in practice, because most phenomena are nonlinear in nature. Indeed, for many dynamic systems the use of nonlinear models is often of great interest and generally characterizes adequately physical processes over their whole operating range. Thus, accuracy and performance of the control law increase significantly. Therefore, nonlinear system modeling is much more important than linear system identification.     Multi-layer functional approximation of non-linear unsteady aerodynamic response

    Non-linear unsteady aerodynamic effects present major modelling difficulties in the analysis of aeroelastic response and in the subsequent design of appropriate controllers. As the direct use of the basic fluid mechanic equations is still not practical for aeroelastic applications, approximate models of the non-linear unsteady aerodynamic response are required. A rigorous mathematical framework, that can account for the complex non-linearities and time-history effects of the unsteady aerodynamic response, is provided by the use of functional representations. A recent development, based on functional approximation theory, has provided a new functional form; namely, multi-layer functionals. Moreover, the multi-layer functional representation for time-invariant, infinite memory systems is shown to be realisable in terms of temporal neural networks. In this work, a multi-layer functional representation of non-linear motion-induced unsteady aerodynamic response is presented. A discrete-time, finite memory temporal neural network, in the form of a finite impulse response (FIR) neural network, is used as a practical realisation of a multi-layer functional. This model form permits the identification of parametric input-output models of the non-linear motion-induced unsteady aerodynamic response. Identification of an appropriate FIR neural network model is facilitated by means of a supervised training process using multiple sets of motion-induced unsteady aerodynamic response. The training process is based on a conventional genetic algorithm to optimise the FIR neural network architecture, and is combined with a simplification of the simulated annealing algorithm to update weight and bias values

    Tree-Structured Nonlinear Adaptive Signal Processing

    In communication systems, nonlinear adaptive filtering has become increasingly popular in a variety of applications such as channel equalization, echo cancellation and speech coding. However, existing nonlinear adaptive filters such as polynomial (truncated Volterra series) filters and multilayer perceptrons suffer from a number of problems. First, although high Order polynomials can approximate complex nonlinearities, they also train very slowly. Second, there is no systematic and efficient way to select their structure. As for multilayer perceptrons, they have a very complicated structure and train extremely slowly Motivated by the success of classification and regression trees on difficult nonlinear and nonparametfic problems, we propose the idea of a tree-structured piecewise linear adaptive filter. In the proposed method each node in a tree is associated with a linear filter restricted to a polygonal domain, and this is done in such a way that each pruned subtree is associated with a piecewise linear filter. A training sequence is used to adaptively update the filter coefficients and domains at each node, and to select the best pruned subtree and the corresponding piecewise linear filter. The tree structured approach offers several advantages. First, it makes use of standard linear adaptive filtering techniques at each node to find the corresponding Conditional linear filter. Second, it allows for efficient selection of the subtree and the corresponding piecewise linear filter of appropriate complexity. Overall, the approach is computationally efficient and conceptually simple. The tree-structured piecewise linear adaptive filter bears some similarity to classification and regression trees. But it is actually quite different from a classification and regression tree. Here the terminal nodes are not just assigned a region and a class label or a regression value, but rather represent: a linear filter with restricted domain, It is also different in that classification and regression trees are determined in a batch mode offline, whereas the tree-structured adaptive filter is determined recursively in real-time. We first develop the specific structure of a tree-structured piecewise linear adaptive filter and derive a stochastic gradient-based training algorithm. We then carry out a rigorous convergence analysis of the proposed training algorithm for the tree-structured filter. Here we show the mean-square convergence of the adaptively trained tree-structured piecewise linear filter to the optimal tree-structured piecewise linear filter. Same new techniques are developed for analyzing stochastic gradient algorithms with fixed gains and (nonstandard) dependent data. Finally, numerical experiments are performed to show the computational and performance advantages of the tree-structured piecewise linear filter over linear and polynomial filters for equalization of high frequency channels with severe intersymbol interference, echo cancellation in telephone networks and predictive coding of speech signals

    Development of Novel Techniques to Study Nonlinear Active Noise Control

    Active noise control has been a field of growing interest over the past few decades. The challenges thrown by active noise control have attracted the notice of the scientific community to engage them in intense level of research. Cancellation of acoustic noise electronically in a simple and efficient way is the vital merit of the active noise control system. A detailed study about existing strategies for active noise control has been undertaken in the present work. This study has given an insight regarding various factors influencing performance of modern active noise control systems. The development of new training algorithms and structures for active noise control are active fields of research which are exploiting the benefits of different signal processing and soft- computing techniques. The nonlinearity contributed by environment and various components of active noise control system greatly affects the ultimate performance of an active noise canceller. This fact motivated to pursue the research work in developing novel architectures and algorithms to address the issues of nonlinear active noise control. One of the primary focus of the work is the application of artificial neural network to effectively combat the problem of active noise control. This is because artificial neural networks are inherently nonlinear processors and possesses capabilities of universal approximation and thus are well suited to exhibit high performance when used in nonlinear active noise control. The present work contributed significantly in designing efficient nonlinear active noise canceller based on neural network platform. Novel neural filtered-x least mean square and neural filtered-e least mean square algorithms are proposed for nonlinear active noise control taking into consideration the nonlinear secondary path. Employing Legendre neural network led the development of a set new adaptive algorithms such as Legendre filtered-x least mean square, Legendre vi filtered-e least mean square, Legendre filtered-x recursive least square and fast Legendre filtered-x least mean square algorithms. The proposed algorithms outperformed the existing standard algorithms for nonlinear active noise control in terms of steady state mean square error with reduced computational complexity. Efficient frequency domain implementation of some the proposed algorithms have been undertaken to exploit its benefits. Exhaustive simulation studies carried out have established the efficacy of the proposed architectures and algorithms

    Dirty RF Signal Processing for Mitigation of Receiver Front-end Non-linearity

    Moderne drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme stellen hohe und teilweise gegensätzliche Anforderungen an die Hardware der Funkmodule, wie z.B. niedriger Energieverbrauch, große Bandbreite und hohe Linearität. Die Gewährleistung einer ausreichenden Linearität ist, neben anderen analogen Parametern, eine Herausforderung im praktischen Design der Funkmodule. Der Fokus der Dissertation liegt auf breitbandigen HF-Frontends für Software-konfigurierbare Funkmodule, die seit einigen Jahren kommerziell verfügbar sind. Die praktischen Herausforderungen und Grenzen solcher flexiblen Funkmodule offenbaren sich vor allem im realen Experiment. Eines der Hauptprobleme ist die Sicherstellung einer ausreichenden analogen Performanz über einen weiten Frequenzbereich. Aus einer Vielzahl an analogen Störeffekten behandelt die Arbeit die Analyse und Minderung von Nichtlinearitäten in Empfängern mit direkt-umsetzender Architektur. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei Signalverarbeitungsstrategien zur Minderung nichtlinear verursachter Interferenz - ein Algorithmus, der besser unter "Dirty RF"-Techniken bekannt ist. Ein digitales Verfahren nach der Vorwärtskopplung wird durch intensive Simulationen, Messungen und Implementierung in realer Hardware verifiziert. Um die Lücken zwischen Theorie und praktischer Anwendbarkeit zu schließen und das Verfahren in reale Funkmodule zu integrieren, werden verschiedene Untersuchungen durchgeführt. Hierzu wird ein erweitertes Verhaltensmodell entwickelt, das die Struktur direkt-umsetzender Empfänger am besten nachbildet und damit alle Verzerrungen im HF- und Basisband erfasst. Darüber hinaus wird die Leistungsfähigkeit des Algorithmus unter realen Funkkanal-Bedingungen untersucht. Zusätzlich folgt die Vorstellung einer ressourceneffizienten Echtzeit-Implementierung des Verfahrens auf einem FPGA. Abschließend diskutiert die Arbeit verschiedene Anwendungsfelder, darunter spektrales Sensing, robuster GSM-Empfang und GSM-basiertes Passivradar. Es wird gezeigt, dass nichtlineare Verzerrungen erfolgreich in der digitalen Domäne gemindert werden können, wodurch die Bitfehlerrate gestörter modulierter Signale sinkt und der Anteil nichtlinear verursachter Interferenz minimiert wird. Schließlich kann durch das Verfahren die effektive Linearität des HF-Frontends stark erhöht werden. Damit wird der zuverlässige Betrieb eines einfachen Funkmoduls unter dem Einfluss der Empfängernichtlinearität möglich. Aufgrund des flexiblen Designs ist der Algorithmus für breitbandige Empfänger universal einsetzbar und ist nicht auf Software-konfigurierbare Funkmodule beschränkt.Today's wireless communication systems place high requirements on the radio's hardware that are largely mutually exclusive, such as low power consumption, wide bandwidth, and high linearity. Achieving a sufficient linearity, among other analogue characteristics, is a challenging issue in practical transceiver design. The focus of this thesis is on wideband receiver RF front-ends for software defined radio technology, which became commercially available in the recent years. Practical challenges and limitations are being revealed in real-world experiments with these radios. One of the main problems is to ensure a sufficient RF performance of the front-end over a wide bandwidth. The thesis covers the analysis and mitigation of receiver non-linearity of typical direct-conversion receiver architectures, among other RF impairments. The main focus is on DSP-based algorithms for mitigating non-linearly induced interference, an approach also known as "Dirty RF" signal processing techniques. The conceived digital feedforward mitigation algorithm is verified through extensive simulations, RF measurements, and implementation in real hardware. Various studies are carried out that bridge the gap between theory and practical applicability of this approach, especially with the aim of integrating that technique into real devices. To this end, an advanced baseband behavioural model is developed that matches to direct-conversion receiver architectures as close as possible, and thus considers all generated distortions at RF and baseband. In addition, the algorithm's performance is verified under challenging fading conditions. Moreover, the thesis presents a resource-efficient real-time implementation of the proposed solution on an FPGA. Finally, different use cases are covered in the thesis that includes spectrum monitoring or sensing, GSM downlink reception, and GSM-based passive radar. It is shown that non-linear distortions can be successfully mitigated at system level in the digital domain, thereby decreasing the bit error rate of distorted modulated signals and reducing the amount of non-linearly induced interference. Finally, the effective linearity of the front-end is increased substantially. Thus, the proper operation of a low-cost radio under presence of receiver non-linearity is possible. Due to the flexible design, the algorithm is generally applicable for wideband receivers and is not restricted to software defined radios

    Bayes meets Bach: applications of Bayesian statistics to audio restoration

    Memoryless nonlinear distortion can be present in audio signals, from recording to reproduction: bad quality or amateurishly operated equipments, physically degraded media and low quality reproducing devices are some examples where nonlinearities can naturally appear. Another quite common defect in old recordings are the long pulses, caused in general by the reproduction of disks with deep scratches or severely degraded magnetic tapes. Such defects are characterized by an initial discontinuity in the waveform, followed by a low-frequency transient of long duration. In both cases audible artifacts can be created, causing an unpleasant experience to the listener. It is then important to develop techniques to mitigate such defects, having at hand only the degraded signal, in a way to recover the original signal. In this thesis, techniques to deal with both problems are presented: the restoration of nonlinearly degraded recordings is tackled in a Bayesian context, considering both autoregressive models and sparsity in the DCT domain for the original signal, as well as through a deterministic solution also based on sparsity; for the suppression of long pulses, a parametric approach is revisited with the addition of an efficient initialization procedure, and a nonparametric modeling via Gaussian process is also presented.Distorções não-lineares podem aparecer em sinais de áudio desde o momento da sua gravação até a posterior reprodução: equipamentos precários ou operados de maneira indevida, mídias fisicamente degradadas e baixa qualidade dos aparelhos de reprodução são somente alguns exemplos onde não-linearidades podem aparecer de modo natural. Outro defeito bastante comum em gravações antigas são os pulsos longos, em geral causados pela reprodução de discos com arranhões muito profundos ou fitas magnéticas severamente degradadas. Tais defeitos são caracterizados por uma descontinuidade inicial na forma de onda, seguida de um transitório de baixa frequência e longa duração. Em ambos os casos, artefatos auditivos podem ser criados, causando assim uma experiência ruim para o ouvinte. E importante então desenvolver técnicas para mitigar tais efeitos, tendo como base somente uma versão do sinal degradado, de modo a recuperar o sinal original não degradado. Nessa tese são apresentadas técnicas para lidar com esses dois problemas: o problema de restaurar gravações corrompidas com distorções não-lineares é abordado em um contexto bayesiano, considerando tanto modelos autorregressivos quanto de esparsidade no domínio da DCT para o sinal original, bem como por uma solução determinística também em usando esparsidade; para a supressão de pulsos longos, uma abordagem paramétrica é revisitada, junto com o acréscimo de um eficiente procedimento de inicialização, sendo também apresentada uma abordagem não-paramétricausando processos gaussianos
