    A Cultivated Differential Evolution Algorithm using modified Mutation and Selection Strategy

    In the present study a modified new variant of Differential Evolution (DE) is proposed, named Cultivated Differential Evolution (CuDE). This algorithm is different from basic DE in two ways. Firstly, the selection of the base vector for mutation operation is not totally randomized while in basic DE uniformly generated random numbers serve this task. Secondly, information preservation concept is used to generate population for the next generation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated on a bed of eight benchmark problems taken from literature and compared against the basic DE and some other variants of DE. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm helps in formulating a better trade-off between convergence rate and efficiency.     Improved Multi-Population Differential Evolution for Large-Scale Global Optimization

    Differential evolution (DE) is an efficient population-based search algorithm with good robustness, however, it is challenged to deal with high-dimensional problems. In this paper, we propose an improved multi-population differential evolution with best-and-current mutation strategy (mDE-bcM). The population is divided into three subpopulations based on the fitness values, each of subpopulations uses different mutation strategy. After crossover, mutation and selection, all subpopulations are updated based on the new fitness values of their individuals. An improved mutation strategy is proposed, which uses a new approach to generate base vector that is composed of the best individual and current individual. The performance of mDE-bcM is evaluated on a set of 19 large-scale continuous optimization problems, a comparative study is carried out with other state-of-the-art optimization techniques. The results show that mDE-bcM has a competitive performance compared to the contestant algorithms and better efficiency for large-scale optimization problems

    Differential evolution with an evolution path: a DEEP evolutionary algorithm

    Utilizing cumulative correlation information already existing in an evolutionary process, this paper proposes a predictive approach to the reproduction mechanism of new individuals for differential evolution (DE) algorithms. DE uses a distributed model (DM) to generate new individuals, which is relatively explorative, whilst evolution strategy (ES) uses a centralized model (CM) to generate offspring, which through adaptation retains a convergence momentum. This paper adopts a key feature in the CM of a covariance matrix adaptation ES, the cumulatively learned evolution path (EP), to formulate a new evolutionary algorithm (EA) framework, termed DEEP, standing for DE with an EP. Without mechanistically combining two CM and DM based algorithms together, the DEEP framework offers advantages of both a DM and a CM and hence substantially enhances performance. Under this architecture, a self-adaptation mechanism can be built inherently in a DEEP algorithm, easing the task of predetermining algorithm control parameters. Two DEEP variants are developed and illustrated in the paper. Experiments on the CEC'13 test suites and two practical problems demonstrate that the DEEP algorithms offer promising results, compared with the original DEs and other relevant state-of-the-art EAs

    Freeze-drying modeling and monitoring using a new neuro-evolutive technique

    This paper is focused on the design of a black-box model for the process of freeze-drying of pharmaceuticals. A new methodology based on a self-adaptive differential evolution scheme is combined with a back-propagation algorithm, as local search method, for the simultaneous structural and parametric optimization of the model represented by a neural network. Using the model of the freeze-drying process, both the temperature and the residual ice content in the product vs. time can be determine off-line, given the values of the operating conditions (the temperature of the heating shelf and the pressure in the drying chamber). This makes possible to understand if the maximum temperature allowed by the product is trespassed and when the sublimation drying is complete, thus providing a valuable tool for recipe design and optimization. Besides, the black box model can be applied to monitor the freeze-drying process: in this case, the measurement of product temperature is used as input variable of the neural network in order to provide in-line estimation of the state of the product (temperature and residual amount of ice).     Optimization of force-limiting seismic devices connecting structural subsystems

    This paper is focused on the optimum design of an original force-limiting floor anchorage system for the seismic protection of reinforced concrete (RC) dual wall-frame buildings. This protection strategy is based on the interposition of elasto-plastic links between two structural subsystems, namely the lateral force resisting system (LFRS) and the gravity load resisting system (GLRS). The most efficient configuration accounting for the optimal position and mechanical characteristics of the nonlinear devices is obtained numerically by means of a modified constrained differential evolution algorithm. A 12-storey prototype RC dual wall-frame building is considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the seismic protection strategy
