    Abstract In the near future, an important milestone for the evolution of wireless technologies will be the deployment of 5G network, having the target of supporting very huge data rate generated by a very high number of devices. One of the main technological enablers in this evolution is the joint SDN/NFV paradigm, defined in the last years to support the softwarization process of the Telco Operator networks. Given the very hard quality of experience (QoE) and quality of service (QoS) requirements in some application scenarios, mainly in terms of end-to-end delay, a challenging activity is to realize tools that can support network architects in performance evaluation and network design. With this in mind, this paper proposes a simulative tool for 5G networks, which is able to capture delay statistics due to both CPU load and transmission link congestions in NFVI-PoP nodes. The model is then applied to a case study to demonstrate how it can be applied for performance evaluation

    On the Modelling of CDNaaS Deployment

    With the increasing demand for over the top media content, understanding user perception and Quality of Experience (QoE) estimation have become a major business necessity for service providers. Online video broadcasting is a multifaceted procedure and calculation of performance for the components that build up a streaming platform requires an overall understanding of the Content Delivery Network as a service (CDNaaS) concept. Therefore, to evaluate delivery quality and predicting user perception while considering NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and limited cloud resources, a relationship between these concepts is required. In this paper, a generalized mathematical model to calculate the success rate of different tiers of online video delivery system is presented. Furthermore, an algorithm that indicates the correct moment to switch between CDNs is provided to improve throughput efficiency while maintaining QoE and keeping the cloud hosting costs as lowest possible

    IT and Multi-layer Online Resource Allocation and Offline Planning in Metropolitan Networks

    Metropolitan networks are undergoing a major technological breakthrough leveraging the capabilities of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). NFV permits the deployment of virtualized network functions (VNFs) on commodity hardware appliances which can be combined with SDN flexibility and programmability of the network infrastructure. SDN/NFV-enabled networks require decision-making in two time scales: short-term online resource allocation and mid-to-long term offline planning. In this paper, we first tackle the dimensioning of SDN/NFV-enabled metropolitan networks paying special attention to the role that latency plays in the capacity planning. We focus on a specific use-case: the metropolitan network that covers the Murcia - Alicante Spanish regions. Then, we propose a latency-aware multilayer service-chain allocation (LA-ML-SCA) algorithm to explore a range of maximum latency requirements and their impact on the resources for dimensioning the metropolitan network. We observe that design costs increase for low latency requirements as more data center facilities need to be spread to get closer to the network edge, reducing the economies of scale on the IT infrastructure. Subsequently, we review our recent joint computation of multi-site VNF placement and multilayer resource allocation in the deployment of a network service in a metro network. Specifically, a set of subroutines contained in LA-ML-SCA are experimentally validated in a network optimization-as-a-service architecture that assists an Open-Source MANO instance, virtual infrastructure managers and WAN controllers in a metro network test-bed.Grant numbers : Go2Edge - Engineering Future Edge Computing Networks, Systems and Services.@ 2020 IEEE.     Joint multi-objective MEH selection and traffic path computation in 5G-MEC systems

    Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is an emerging technology that allows to reduce the service latency and traffic congestion and to enable cloud offloading and context awareness. MEC consists in deploying computing devices, called MEC Hosts (MEHs), close to the user. Given the mobility of the user, several problems rise. The first problem is to select a MEH to run the service requested by the user. Another problem is to select the path to steer the traffic from the user to the selected MEH. The paper jointly addresses these two problems. First, the paper proposes a procedure to create a graph that is able to capture both network-layer and application-layer performance. Then, the proposed graph is used to apply the Multi-objective Dijkstra Algorithm (MDA), a technique used for multi-objective optimization problems, in order to find solutions to the addressed problems by simultaneously considering different performance metrics and constraints. To evaluate the performance of MDA, the paper implements a testbed based on AdvantEDGE and Kubernetes to migrate a VideoLAN application between two MEHs. A controller has been realized to integrate MDA with the 5G-MEC system in the testbed. The results show that MDA is able to perform the migration with a limited impact on the network performance and user experience. The lack of migration would instead lead to a severe reduction of the user experience.publishedVersio

    Grid Computing is a set of resources; the separate computational power of these resources has combination to execute a huge task. Usually, in a Computational Grid environment, the main resource is the Central Processing Unit (CPU), mostly used in research fields that demand high computational power to perform massive and complicated calculations. Cloud Computing is a promising computing pattern which offers facilities and common resources on demand over the Web. The implementation of cloud computing applications has high priority, especially in the modern world, for example in providing adequate funding for social services and purchasing programs. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of cloud computing over a Smart Grid: reliable, guaranteed and efficient with low cost, it is expected to offer Long Term Evolution (LTE). This allows larger pieces of the spectrum, or bands, to be used, with greater coverage and less latency. The third technology is the Vehicular Network, an important research area because of its unique features and potential applications. In this survey, we present an overview of the smart grid, LTE and vehicular network integrated with cloud computing. We also highlight the open issues and research directions in implementing these technologies with cloud computing in terms of energy and information management for smart grids; applying cloud computing platforms for 4G networks to achieve specific criteria; and finally architectural formation, privacy and security for vehicular cloud computing

    The Need of Multidisciplinary Approaches and Engineering Tools for the Development and Implementation of the Smart City Paradigm

    This paper is motivated by the concept that the successful, effective, and sustainable implementation of the smart city paradigm requires a close cooperation among researchers with different, complementary interests and, in most cases, a multidisciplinary approach. It first briefly discusses how such a multidisciplinary methodology, transversal to various disciplines such as architecture, computer science, civil engineering, electrical, electronic and telecommunication engineering, social science and behavioral science, etc., can be successfully employed for the development of suitable modeling tools and real solutions of such sociotechnical systems. Then, the paper presents some pilot projects accomplished by the authors within the framework of some major European Union (EU) and national research programs, also involving the Bologna municipality and some of the key players of the smart city industry. Each project, characterized by different and complementary approaches/modeling tools, is illustrated along with the relevant contextualization and the advancements with respect to the state of the art
