Its purpose is to provide background material for the IIASA Conference on "Integrated Systems Control in the Steel Industry" scheduled for 30 June to 2 July, 1975. A second purpose is to motivate feedbacks concerning omissions and additions generated by respondents and Conference participants which may be incorporated into the final 'report
The design of an airport terminal in Somerset East, province of the Eastern Cape
In addressing the stunted growth of the town of Somerset East, the treatise suggests that the model of an aerotropolis be used as means to spur economic growth an development of the town. The treatise proposes the design of an air terminal facility, to act as a catalyst, for which growth of a mini-Aerotropolis will happen around as well as a northern gateway for tourism to two of South Africa's popular national parks; Addo Elephant National Park and Mountain Zebra National park. The challenge being the creation of a building type that incorporates several would be segregated activities into one hybrid that generates public space within an interface or transcient space
The durability of precast concrete elements
Bibliography: leaves 69-72.Modern fast track construction methods increasingly favour the use of precast concrete elements. Precast box culverts are structurally significant units, subject to an important combination of bridge loadings. Culverts occasionally in contact with water pose a high durability risk. Despite this, the current specifications allow a reduction in cover to reinforcing steel for precast culverts to only 20 mm from at least 40 mm for cast-in-place culverts
Integrated Models and Tools for Design and Management of Global Supply Chain
In modern and global supply chain, the increasing trend toward product variety, level of service, short delivery delay and response time to consumers, highlight the importance to set and configure smooth and efficient logistic processes and operations.
In order to comply such purposes the supply chain management (SCM) theory entails a wide set of models, algorithms, procedure, tools and best practices for the design, the management and control of articulated supply chain networks and logistics nodes.
The purpose of this Ph.D. dissertation is going in detail on the principle aspects and concerns of supply chain network and warehousing systems, by proposing and illustrating useful methods, procedures and support-decision tools for the design and management of real instance applications, such those currently face by enterprises.
In particular, after a comprehensive literature review of the principal warehousing issues and entities, the manuscript focuses on design top-down procedure for both less-than-unit-load OPS and unit-load storage systems. For both, decision-support software platforms are illustrated as useful tools to address the optimization of the warehousing performances and efficiency metrics. The development of such interfaces enables to test the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical top-down procedure with huge real case studies, taken by industry applications.
Whether the large part of the manuscript deals with micro concerns of warehousing nodes, also macro issues and aspects related to the planning, design, and management of the whole supply chain are enquired and discussed.
The integration of macro criticalities, such as the design of the supply chain infrastructure and the placement of the logistic nodes, with micro concerns, such the design of warehousing nodes and the management of material handling, is addressed through the definition of integrated models and procedures, involving the overall supply chain and the whole product life cycle.
A new integrated perspective should be applied in study and planning of global supply chains. Each aspect of the reality influences the others. Each product consumed by a customer tells a story, made by activities, transformations, handling, processes, traveling around the world. Each step of this story accounts costs, time, resources exploitation, labor, waste, pollution. The economical and environmental sustainability of the modern global supply chain is the challenge to face

Investigation into the use of zero angle ultrasonic probe array for defect detection and location
The steel industry like any other manufacturing process is under constant pressure to deliver higher quality defect free material at lower cost to customers. This push for zero defects has led to improved manufacturing processes and the need for more reliable, faster defect testing methods. Ultrasound fundamentally provides a mechanical stress, produced by tensile, compressive, shearing or flexural forces, which are of such low intensity that no material damage occurs. The remit of the project was to investigate and develop the latent potential within the Present automated ultrasonic immersion system using an array of normal angle probes, used for billet inspection. The work presented in this thesis describes the research undertaken to develop a system using, 10mm diameter, standard zero angled 5MHz ultrasonic transducers. The transducers were used at linear separation distances of between 22.5mm and 45mm set in a typical 8-probe array orientation. The developed technique is potentially transferable to other ultrasonic multi-probe array applications and demonstrates that time of flight diffraction can be realised using normal probes, and termed Normal Probe Diffraction, (NPD). The technique located defects, using the intersection of ellipses, with an error of <0.5% of the signal transit distance and, with the application of a correlation filter, improved the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) fromâ20dB to 17.0dB
Improving performance of store management: a case study of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd. (DESCO)
This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Procurement and Supply Management, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis report.Includes bibliographical references (page 84).Creation of Dhaka Electric Supply Company is a part of the reforms being initiated by the
Bangladesh Government to increase efficiency in the area of generation, transmission and
distribution. After its commencement on September 24, 1998 DESCO proved successful and
therefore in the subsequent years of successful operation and performance, the operational
area of DESCO was expanded and the total consumer growth increased. Being the first public
limited company in the energy sector, DESCO is now considered as a profitable company
which is managed efficiently and economically with optimum cost and manpower.
Consequently DESCO Management has to face lots of challenges and threats as well as
opportunities to improve its operational performance.
DESCOâs stores and spares stand almost two-fifth of the shareholderâs equity. Again in recent
days, physical storage and distribution has crucial roles to play for the organisation. The role
of the management of stores is concerned with improving both the efficiency and the
effectiveness of the stores function by seeking to eliminate waste from activities that add cost
to the supply chain, while maximising those areas that add value. Before starting of this thesis,
the researcher assumed that Store Management of DESCO has no specific long term vision
and goals in its stores. In addition, the researcher also assumed that existing performance of
Store Management is not that much satisfactory in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in
comparison with the standards of similar industry. In general, this study is expected to helpful
to the policy makers of DESCO to improving the existing performance of Store Management.
The objectives of the study were achieved through three approaches; the first one was a valid
questionnaire that was obtained from respondentsâ of DESCO. The second one is achieved
through studying some practical cases, experienced by Store Management overtime. The third
one is achieved through key informant interviews of store related officers and staffs of
DESCO. A questionnaire was prepared to know the general perception and attitude regarding
Store Management, to determine its objectives and scope, to evaluate the strategic factors
affecting the choice of Store Management, to appraise and evaluate the role and effects of
different stores, to assess Inventory Management, to examine and analyse security in different
stores, to examine health and safety and legal issues involved in Store Management and to
evaluate the use of information and Communication Technology at Central Store. After getting the response from the respondentsâ from questionnaire, practical experience and
key informant interview, the study recommends some of the key areas for improvement of
store management. The researcher recommends a number of possible ways in certain
improving areas to DESCO Management like organization and management, personnel
management, store management strategy, stock rotation and control, safety measures, security,
warehouse premises, material handling equipment, dispatch, ICT, disposal of goods,
inspection etc. The researcher believes that if DESCO Management considers and implements
those recommendations in store management then existing performance of store management
would certainly improve.
Store Management is now considered as an inseparable part of all business. If effectively
maintained and organised, Store Management of DESCO could keep safe custody of
materials, their receipts, issues, and accounting with the objective of efficiently and
economically providing the right goods at the right time whenever required in the right
condition to all user departments.Rashed MorshedM. Procurement and Supply Managemen
