    Finding patterns in student and medical office data using rough sets

    Data have been obtained from King Khaled General Hospital in Saudi Arabia. In this project, I am trying to discover patterns in these data by using implemented algorithms in an experimental tool, called Rough Set Graphic User Interface (RSGUI). Several algorithms are available in RSGUI, each of which is based in Rough Set theory. My objective is to find short meaningful predictive rules. First, we need to find a minimum set of attributes that fully characterize the data. Some of the rules generated from this minimum set will be obvious, and therefore uninteresting. Others will be surprising, and therefore interesting. Usual measures of strength of a rule, such as length of the rule, certainty and coverage were considered. In addition, a measure of interestingness of the rules has been developed based on questionnaires administered to human subjects. There were bugs in the RSGUI java codes and one algorithm in particular, Inductive Learning Algorithm (ILA) missed some cases that were subsequently resolved in ILA2 but not updated in RSGUI. I solved the ILA issue on RSGUI. So now ILA on RSGUI is running well and gives good results for all cases encountered in the hospital administration and student records data.Master's These

    Multivariate discretization of continuous valued attributes.

    The area of Knowledge discovery and data mining is growing rapidly. Feature Discretization is a crucial issue in Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), or Data Mining because most data sets used in real world applications have features with continuously values. Discretization is performed as a preprocessing step of the data mining to make data mining techniques useful for these data sets. This thesis addresses discretization issue by proposing a multivariate discretization (MVD) algorithm. It begins withal number of common discretization algorithms like Equal width discretization, Equal frequency discretization, Naïve; Entropy based discretization, Chi square discretization, and orthogonal hyper planes. After that comparing the results achieved by the multivariate discretization (MVD) algorithm with the accuracy results of other algorithms. This thesis is divided into six chapters, covering a few common discretization algorithms and tests these algorithms on a real world datasets which varying in size and complexity, and shows how data visualization techniques will be effective in determining the degree of complexity of the given data set. We have examined the multivariate discretization (MVD) algorithm with the same data sets. After that we have classified discrete data using artificial neural network single layer perceptron and multilayer perceptron with back propagation algorithm. We have trained the Classifier using the training data set, and tested its accuracy using the testing data set. Our experiments lead to better accuracy results with some data sets and low accuracy results with other data sets, and this is subject ot the degree of data complexity then we have compared the accuracy results of multivariate discretization (MVD) algorithm with the results achieved by other discretization algorithms. We have found that multivariate discretization (MVD) algorithm produces good accuracy results in comparing with the other discretization algorithm

    Towards an Effective Imaging-Based Decision Support System for Skin Cancer

    The usage of expert systems to aid in medical decisions has been employed since 1980s in distinct ap plications. With the high demands of medical care and limited human resources, these technologies are required more than ever. Skin cancer has been one of the pathologies with higher growth, which suf fers from lack of dermatology experts in most of the affected geographical areas. A permanent record of examination that can be further analyzed are medical imaging modalities. Most of these modalities were also assessed along with machine learning classification methods. It is the aim of this research to provide background information about skin cancer types, medical imaging modalities, data mining and machine learning methods, and their application on skin cancer imaging, as well as the disclosure of a proposal of a multi-imaging modality decision support system for skin cancer diagnosis and treatment assessment based in the most recent available technology.
