    Boosting XML Filtering with a Scalable FPGA-based Architecture

    The growing amount of XML encoded data exchanged over the Internet increases the importance of XML based publish-subscribe (pub-sub) and content based routing systems. The input in such systems typically consists of a stream of XML documents and a set of user subscriptions expressed as XML queries. The pub-sub system then filters the published documents and passes them to the subscribers. Pub-sub systems are characterized by very high input ratios, therefore the processing time is critical. In this paper we propose a "pure hardware" based solution, which utilizes XPath query blocks on FPGA to solve the filtering problem. By utilizing the high throughput that an FPGA provides for parallel processing, our approach achieves drastically better throughput than the existing software or mixed (hardware/software) architectures. The XPath queries (subscriptions) are translated to regular expressions which are then mapped to FPGA devices. By introducing stacks within the FPGA we are able to express and process a wide range of path queries very efficiently, on a scalable environment. Moreover, the fact that the parser and the filter processing are performed on the same FPGA chip, eliminates expensive communication costs (that a multi-core system would need) thus enabling very fast and efficient pipelining.     Real-Time, Dynamic Hardware Accelerators for BLAS Computation

    This paper presents an approach to increasing the capability of scientific computing through the use of real-time, partially reconfigurable hardware accelerators that implement basic linear algebra subprograms (BLAS). The use of reconfigurable hardware accelerators for computing linear algebra functions has the potential to increase floating point computation while at the same time providing an architecture that minimizes data movement latency and increase power efficiency. While there has been significant work by the computing community to optimize BLAS routines at the software level, optimizing these routines in hardware using reconfigurable fabrics is in its infancy. This paper begins with a comprehensive overview of the history and evolution of BLAS for use in scientific computing. In the reviews current successes in using reconfigurable computing architectures achieve acceleration. It then presents an investigation of an accelerator approach with a granularity at the logic circuit level through real-time, partial reconfiguration of a programmable fabric with static accelerator cache memory to minimize data movement. Empirical data is presented for a study on a single-FPGA

    New strategies for the aerodynamic design optimization of aeronautical configurations through soft-computing techniques

Nowadays, this topic is of great importance in order to allow the European aeronautical industry to reduce their development and operational costs, decrease the time-to-market for new aircraft, improve the quality of their products and therefore maintain their competitiveness. Within this thesis, a study of the state-of-the-art of the aerodynamic optimization tools has been performed, and several contributions have been proposed at different levels: -One of the main drawbacks for an industrial application of aerodynamic optimization tools is the huge requirement of computational resources, in particular, for complex optimization problems, current methodological approaches would need more than a year to obtain an optimized aircraft. For this reason, one proposed contribution of this work is focused on reducing the computational cost by the use of different techniques as surrogate modelling, control theory, as well as other more software-related techniques as code optimization and proper domain parallelization, all with the goal of decreasing the cost of the aerodynamic design process. -Other contribution is related to the consideration of the design process as a global optimization problem, and, more specifically, the use of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to perform a preliminary broad exploration of the design space, due to their ability to obtain global optima. Regarding this, EAs have been hybridized with metamodels (or surrogate models), in order to substitute expensive CFD simulations. In this thesis, an innovative approach for the global aerodynamic optimization of aeronautical configurations is proposed, consisting of an Evolutionary Programming algorithm hybridized with a Support Vector regression algorithm (SVMr) as a metamodel. Specific issues as precision, dataset training size, geometry parameterization sensitivity and techniques for design of experiments are discussed and the potential of the proposed approach to achieve innovative shapes that would not be achieved with traditional methods is assessed. -Then, after a broad exploration of the design space, the optimization process is continued with local gradient-based optimization techniques for a finer improvement of the geometry. Here, an automated optimization framework is presented to address aerodynamic shape design problems. Key aspects of this framework include the use of the adjoint methodology to make the computational requirements independent of the number of design variables, and Computer Aided Design (CAD)-based shape parameterization, which uses the flexibility of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) to handle complex configurations. The mentioned approach is applied to the optimization of several test cases and the improvements of the proposed strategy and its ability to achieve efficient shapes will complete this study

    Just-in-time Hardware generation for abstracted reconfigurable computing

    This thesis addresses the use of reconfigurable hardware in computing platforms, in order to harness the performance benefits of dedicated hardware whilst maintaining the flexibility associated with software. Although the reconfigurable computing concept is not new, the low level nature of the supporting tools normally used, together with the consequent limited level of abstraction and resultant lack of backwards compatibility, has prevented the widespread adoption of this technology. In addition, bandwidth and architectural limitations, have seriously constrained the potential improvements in performance. A review of existing approaches and tools flows is conducted to highlight the current problems being faced in this field. The objective of the work presented in this thesis is to introduce a radically new approach to reconfigurable computing tool flows. The runtime based tool flow introduces complete abstraction between the application developer and the underlying hardware. This new technique eliminates the ease of use and backwards compatibility issues that have plagued the reconfigurable computing concept, and could pave the way for viable mainstream reconfigurable computing platforms. An easy to use, cycle accurate behavioural modelling system is also presented, which was used extensively during the early exploration of new concepts and architectures. Some performance improvements produced by the new reconfigurable computing tool flow, when applied to both a MIPS based embedded platform, and the Cray XDl, are also presented. These results are then analyzed and the hardware and software factors affecting the performance increases that were obtained are discussed, together with potential techniques that could be used to further increase the performance of the system. Lastly a heterogenous computing concept is proposed, in which, a computer system, containing multiple types of computational resource is envisaged, each having their own strengths and weaknesses (e.g. DSPs, CPUs, FPGAs). A revolutionary new method of fully exploiting the potential of such a system, whilst maintaining scalability, backwards compatibility, and ease of use is also presented
