    CMOS Data Converters for Closed-Loop mmWave Transmitters

    With the increased amount of data consumed in mobile communication systems, new solutions for the infrastructure are needed. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is seen as a key enabler for providing this increased capacity. With the use of a large number of transmitters, the cost of each transmitter must be low. Closed-loop transmitters, featuring high-speed data converters is a promising option for achieving this reduced unit cost.In this thesis, both digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters suitable for wideband operation in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO transmitters are demonstrated. A 2 76 bit radio frequency digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC)-based in-phase quadrature (IQ) modulator is demonstrated as a compact building block, that to a large extent realizes the transmit path in a closed-loop mmWave transmitter. The evaluation of an successive-approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is also presented in this thesis. Methods for connecting simulated and measured performance has been studied in order to achieve a better understanding about the alternating comparator topology.These contributions show great potential for enabling closed-loop mmWave transmitters for massive MIMO transmitter realizations

    Propfan Test Assessment (PTA)

    The objectives of the Propfan Test Assessment (PTA) Program were to validate in flight the structural integrity of large-scale propfan blades and to measure noise characteristics of the propfan in both near and far fields. All program objectives were met or exceeded, on schedule and under budget. A Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation GII aircraft was modified to provide a testbed for the 2.74m (9 ft) diameter Hamilton Standard SR-7 propfan which was driven by a 4475 kw (600 shp) turboshaft engine mounted on the left-hand wing of the aircraft. Flight research tests were performed for 20 combinations of speed and altitude within a flight envelope that extended to Mach numbers of 0.85 and altitudes of 12,192m (40,000 ft). Propfan blade stress, near-field noise on aircraft surfaces, and cabin noise were recorded. Primary variables were propfan power and tip speed, and the nacelle tilt angle. Extensive low altitude far-field noise tests were made to measure flyover and sideline noise and the lateral attenuation of noise. In coopertion with the FAA, tests were also made of flyover noise for the aircraft at 6100m (20,000 ft) and 10,668m (35,000 ft). A final series of tests were flown to evaluate an advanced cabin wall noise treatment that was produced under a separate program by NASA-Langley Research Center

    EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB Conceptual Design Report

    It is widely accepted by the international scientific community that a fundamental milestone towards the realization of a plasma driven future Linear Collider (LC) will be the integration of high gradient accelerating plasma modules in a short wavelength Free Electron Laser (FEL) user facility. To this end, in October 2019 the Horizon2020 Design Study EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) will propose the first European Research Infrastructure that is dedicated to demonstrate usability of plasma accelerators delivering high brightness beams up to 1-5 GeV for users. In this report we discuss the EuPRAXIA@ SPARC_LAB project, intended to put forward LNF as host of the EuPRAXIA European Facility. The EuPRAXIA@SPARC_- LAB facility will equip LNF with a unique combination of a high brightness GeV-range electron beam generated in a state-of-the-art X-band RF linac, a 0.5 PW-class laser system and the first 5th generation light source driven by a plasma accelerator. These unique features will enable at LNF new promising synergies between fundamental physics oriented research and high social impact applications, especially in the domain of Key Enabling Technologies (KET) and Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3)
