    Abstract—A strategy for self-oscillating control of LCC current-output resonant converters, is presented, based on varying the phase-angle between the fundamental of the input voltage and current. Unlike other commonly employed control methodologies,the proposed technique is shown to provide a convenient, linear system input-output characteristic suitable for the design of regulators. The method is shown to have a similar effect as controlling the dc-link supply voltage, in terms of output-voltage/current control. The LCC converter variant is used as an application focus for demonstrating the presented techniques, with simulation and experimental measurements from a prototype converter being used to show the practical benefits. Third-order small and large-signal models are developed, and employed in the formulation of robust output-voltage and output-current control schemes. However, notably, the presented techniques are ultimately generic and readily applicable to other resonant converter variants

    Dynamics estimation and generalized tuning of stationary frame current controller for grid-tied power converters

    The integration of AC-DC power converters to manage the connection of generation to the grid has increased exponentially over the last years. PV or wind generation plants are one of the main applications showing this trend. High power converters are increasingly installed for integrating the renewables in a larger scale. The control design for these converters becomes more challenging due to the reduced control bandwidth and increased complexity in the grid connection filter. A generalized and optimized control tuning approach for converters becomes more favored. This paper proposes an algorithm for estimating the dynamic performance of the stationary frame current controllers, and based on it a generalized and optimized tuning approach is developed. The experience-based specifications of the tuning inputs are not necessary through the tuning approach.     Integration of an Active Filter and a Single-Phase AC/DC Converter with Reduced Capacitance Requirement and Component Count

    Existing methods of incorporating an active filter into an AC/DC converter for eliminating electrolytic capacitors usually require extra power switches. This inevitably leads to an increased system cost and degraded energy efficiency. In this paper, a concept of active-filter integration for single-phase AC/DC converters is reported. The resultant converters can provide simultaneous functions of power factor correction, DC voltage regulation, and active power decoupling for mitigating the low-frequency DC voltage ripple, without an electrolytic capacitor and extra power switch. To complement the operation, two closed-loop voltage-ripple-based reference generation methods are developed for controlling the energy storage components to achieve active power decoupling. Both simulation and experiment have confirmed the eligibility of the proposed concept and control methods in a 210-W rectification system comprising an H-bridge converter with a half-bridge active filter. Interestingly, the end converters (Type I and Type II) can be readily available using a conventional H-bridge converter with minor hardware modification. A stable DC output with merely 1.1% ripple is realized with two 50-μF film capacitors. For the same ripple performance, a 900-μF capacitor is required in conventional converters without an active filter. Moreover, it is found out that the active-filter integration concept might even improve the efficiency performance of the end converters as compared with the original AC/DC converter without integration

    Double Resonant High-Frequency Converters for Wireless Power Transfer

    This thesis describes novel techniques and developments in the design and implementation of a low power radio frequency (40kHz to 1MHz) wireless power transfer (WPT) system, with an application in the wireless charging of autonomous drones without physical connection to its on-board Battery Management System (BMS). The WPT system is developed around a matrix converter exploiting the benefits such as a small footprint (DC-link free), high efficiency and high power density. The overall WPT system topology discussed in this thesis is based on the current state-of-the-art found in literature, but enhancements are made through novel methods to further improve the converter’s stability, reduce control complexity and improve the wireless power efficiency. In this work, each part of the system is analysed and novel techniques are proposed to achieve improvements. The WPT system design methodology presented in this thesis commences with the use of a conventional full-bridge converter. For cost-efficiency and to improve the converters stability, a novel gate drive circuit is presented which provides self-generated negative bias such that a bipolar MOSFET drive can be driven without an additional voltage source or magnetic component. The switching control sequences for both a full-bridge and single phase to single phase matrix converter are analysed which show that the switching of a matrix converter can be considered to be the same as a full-bridge converter under certain conditions. A middleware is then presented that reduces the complexity of the control required for a matrix converter and enables control by a conventional full-bridge controller (i.e. linear controller or microcontroller). A novel technique that can maximise and maintain in real-time the WPT efficiency is presented using a maximum efficiency point tracking approach. A detailed study of potential issues that may affect the implementation of this novel approach are presented and new solutions are proposed. A novel wireless pseudo-synchronous sampling method is presented and implemented on a prototype system to realise the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. Finally, a new hybrid wireless phase-locked loop is presented and implemented to minimise the bandwidth requirements of the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. The performance and methods for implementation of the novel concepts introduced in this thesis are demonstrated through a number of prototypes that were built. These include a matrix converter and two full WPT systems with operating frequencies ranging from sub-megahertz to megahertz level. Moreover, the final prototype is applied to the charging of a quadcopter battery pack to successfully charge the pack wirelessly whilst actively balancing the cells. Hence, fast battery charging and cell balancing, which conventionally requires battery removal, can be achieved without re-balance the weight of the UAV

    Novel PLL for power converters under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions

    A novel phase-locked loop (PLL) with simple structure is proposed in the present work for three-phase power converters under adverse grid conditions. Based on a synchronous rotating frame PLL (SRF-PLL), multi-resonant harmonic compensators with the ability of accommodating frequency deviations are employed in the feedback path of a pre-filter. As a result, the negative-sequence component and harmonic distortions of grid voltage can be attenuated. Different from existing methods, only classical regulators are used, avoiding complicated networks for the decoupling of unbalance and harmonics and thus greatly simplifying the control algorithm. The proposed method is analysed and designed in both the continuous s-domain and discrete z-domain, whereby stable, fast, accurate, and robust responses are achieved. Simulation results have been obtained to show the improved performance of the proposed PLL compared with two widely used methods

    Dual active bridge converters in solid state transformers

    This dissertation presents a comprehensive study of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters for Solid State Transformers (SSTs). The first contribution is to propose an ac-ac DAB converter as a single stage SST. The proposed converter topology consists of two active H-bridges and one high-frequency transformer. Output voltage can be regulated when input voltage changes by phase shift modulation. Power is transferred from the leading bridge to the lagging bridge. It analyzes the steady-state operation and the range of zero-voltage switching. It develops a switch commutation scheme for the ac-ac DAB converters. Simulation and experiment results of a scaled down prototype are provided to verify the theoretical analysis. The second contribution is to develop a full-order continuous-time average model for dc-dc DAB converters. The transformer current in DAB converter is purely ac, making continuous-time modeling difficult. Instead, the proposed approach uses the dc terms and 1st order terms of transformer current and capacitor voltage as state variables. Singular perturbation analysis is performed to find the sufficient conditions to separate the dynamics of transformer current and capacitor voltage. Experimental results confirm that the proposed model predicts the small-signal frequency response more accurately. The third contribution addresses the controller design of a dc-dc DAB converter when driving a single-phase dc-ac inverter. It studies the effect of 120 Hz current generated by the single-phase inverter. The limitation of PI-controller is investigated. Two methods are proposed to reduce the voltage ripple at the output voltage of DAB converter. The first method helps the feedback loop with feedforward from inverter, while the second one adds an additional resonance controller to the feedback loop.     Analysis, design, and implementation of the AFZ converter applied to photovoltaic systems

    Grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) installations with Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking (DMPPT) architectures include a DC-DC Module Integrated Converter (MIC) for managing each PV panel, isolating it from the others, reducing the mismatching effect and maximizing the harvested power. In this paper, the Autotransformer Forward converter with type-Zeta resonant reset (AFZ) is proposed as a DMPPT architecture MIC candidate. The main characteristics of the AFZ converter are the high versatility due to its voltage step-up and step-down capability; the use of an optimized autotransformer with only two windings, reducing the complexity and power losses of this component; the good dynamic performances, like the Forward converter ones; the low number of components and the simplicity and high feasibility associated to the use of just one active switch. Besides, soft switching transitions are achieved thanks to the autotransformer type-Zeta resonant reset. The steady-state theoretical analysis, considering the effect of the autotransformer leakage inductance, is presented. The converter is also studied in the frequency domain, obtaining the small-signal transfer functions. A design procedure based on the requirements of a 100 kW grid-tied photovoltaic installation is described, yielding in a 225 W prototype with efficiencies up to 95.6 %.
