    Magnetic Trails: A Novel Artificial Pheromone for Swarm Robotics in Outdoor Environments

    [EN] Swarm robotics finds inspiration in nature to model behaviors, such as the use of pheromone principles. Pheromones provide an indirect and decentralized communication scheme that have shown positive experimental results. Real implementations of pheromones have suffered from slow sensors and have been limited to controlled environments. This paper presents a novel technology to implement real pheromones for swarm robotics in outdoor environments by using magnetized ferrofluids. A ferrofluid solution, with its deposition and magnetization system, is detailed. The proposed substance does not possess harmful materials for the environment and can be safely handled by humans. Validation demonstrates that the substance represents successfully pheromone characteristics of locality, diffusion and evaporation on several surfaces in outdoor conditions. Additionally, the experiments show an improvement over the chemical representation of pheromones by using magnetic substances and existing magnetometer sensor technologies, which provide better response rates and recovery periods than MOX chemical sensors. The present work represents a step toward swarm robotics experimentation in uncontrolled outdoor environments.     Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation

    Swarm robotics: Cooperative navigation in unknown environments

    Swarm Robotics is garnering attention in the robotics field due to its substantial benefits. It has been proven to outperform most other robotic approaches in many applications such as military, space exploration and disaster search and rescue missions. It is inspired by the behavior of swarms of social insects such as ants and bees. It consists of a number of robots with limited capabilities and restricted local sensing. When deployed, individual robots behave according to local sensing until the emergence of a global behavior where they, as a swarm, can accomplish missions individuals cannot. In this research, we propose a novel exploration and navigation method based on a combination of Probabilistic Finite Sate Machine (PFSM), Robotic Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (RDPSO) and Depth First Search (DFS). We use V-REP Simulator to test our approach. We are also implementing our own cost effective swarm robot platform, AntBOT, as a proof of concept for future experimentation. We prove that our proposed method will yield excellent navigation solution in optimal time when compared to methods using either PFSM only or RDPSO only. In fact, our method is proved to produce 40% more success rate along with an exploration speed of 1.4x other methods.     Investigation of Multi-Robots Food Foraging Efficiency with an Artificial Pheromone System

    In nature, the pheromone released by social insects is crucial for communication, which has become a rich inspiration source of swarm robotics. By utilising the virtual pheromone in physical swarm robot system, we can coordinate individuals and simulate behaviours of social insects. This thesis aims to investigate two influences, i.e., the leader and the wind effects on multi-robots’ food foraging efficiency in an artificial pheromone system, wherein the pheromone is represented by light spots or trails on a TV screen. To investigate the leader effect, we remotely controlled a robot agent as a leader to guide other wandering agents to reach a food source with persistent virtual pheromone and then aggregate around it; the released pheromone by the leader could be sensed by other mates so that triggering following behaviour. We compare the aggregation efficiency with the scenarios without a leader robot agent. After that, we simulated wind effects on the virtual pheromone affecting its evaporation and diffusion. The experimental results demonstrate that without interacting with the leader, the aggregation efficiency is highly depending on start positions of follower agents within each experiment. The potential of using the leader interaction with the other robots can improve the swarm efficiency under the same experimental setting. Moreover, the experimenting results of wind effects on the artificial pheromone system and the food foraging simulation demonstrate the wind has the power to influence the food foraging efficiency, which cannot be ignored. This research indicates that the leader and the wind effects are important factors affecting the pheromone-based swarm efficiency

    A Hormone Inspired System for On-line Adaptation in Swarm Robotic Systems

    Individual robots, while providing the opportunity to develop a bespoke and specialised system, suffer in terms of performance when it comes to executing a large number of concurrent tasks. In some cases it is possible to drastically increase the speed of task execution by adding more agents to a system, however this comes at a cost. By mass producing relatively simple robots, costs can be kept low while still gaining the benefit of large scale multi-tasking. This approach sits at the core of swarm robotics. Robot swarms excel in tasks that rely heavily on their ability to multi-task, rather than applications that require bespoke actuation. Swarm suited tasks include: exploration, transportation or operation in dangerous environments. Swarms are particularly suited to hazardous environments due to the inherent expendability that comes with having multiple, decentralised agents. However, due to the variance in the environments a swarm may explore and their need to remain decentralised, a level of adaptability is required of them that can't be provided before a task begins. Methods of novel hormone-inspired robotic control are proposed in this thesis, offering solutions to these problems. These hormone inspired systems, or virtual hormones, provide an on-line method for adaptation that operates while a task is executed. These virtual hormones respond to environmental interactions. Then, through a mixture of decay and stimulant, provide values that grant contextually relevant information to individual robots. These values can then be used in decision making regarding parameters and behavioural changes. The hormone inspired systems presented in this thesis are found to be effective in mid-task adaptation, allowing robots to improve their effectiveness with minimal user interaction.     Swarm robotics is a research field inspired from the natural behavior of ants, bees or fish in their natural habitat. Each group display swarm behavior in different ways. For example, ants use pheromones to trace one another in order to find a nest, reach a food source or do any operation, while bees use dance moves to attract one another to the desired place. In swarm robotics, small robots attempt to mimic insect behavior. The robotic swarm group collaborate to perform a task and collectively solve a given problem. In the process, the robots use the sensors they are equipped with to move, communicate or avoid obstacles until they collectively do the desired functionality. In this thesis, we propose a modification to the Robotic Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (RDPSO) algorithm. In the RDPSO, robots deployed in a rescue operation, transport one object at a time to a desired safe place. In our algorithm, we simultaneously transport multiple objects to safety. We call our algorithm Multi Robotics Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (MRDPSO). Our algorithm is developed and implemented on a VREP simulator using ePuck robots as swarm members. We test our algorithm using two different environment sizes complete with obstacles. First implementation is for two simultaneous object transported but can be extended to more than two. We compare our new algorithm to the results of single RDPSO and found our algorithm to be 35 to 41 % faster. We also compared our results to those obtained from three selected papers that are Ghosh, Konar, and Janarthanan [1], TORABI [2], and Kube and Bonabeau [3]. The performance measures we compare to are the accuracy of transporting all objects to desired location, and the time efficiency of transporting all the objects in our new system

    Multi‑Agent Foraging: state‑of‑the‑art and research challenges

    International audienceThe foraging task is one of the canonical testbeds for cooperative robotics, in which a collection of robots has to search and transport objects to specific storage point(s). In this paper, we investigate the Multi-Agent Foraging (MAF) problem from several perspectives that we analyze in depth. First, we define the Foraging Problem according to literature definitions. Then we analyze previously proposed taxonomies, and propose a new foraging taxonomy characterized by four principal axes: Environment, Collective, Strategy and Simulation, summarize related foraging works and classify them through our new foraging taxonomy. Then, we discuss the real implementation of MAF and present a comparison between some related foraging works considering important features that show extensibility, reliability and scalability of MAF systems. Finally we present and discuss recent trends in this field, emphasizing the various challenges that could enhance the existing MAF solutions and make them realistic
