A Functional Taxonomy of Music Generation Systems
Digital advances have transformed the face of automatic music generation
since its beginnings at the dawn of computing. Despite the many breakthroughs,
issues such as the musical tasks targeted by different machines and the degree
to which they succeed remain open questions. We present a functional taxonomy
for music generation systems with reference to existing systems. The taxonomy
organizes systems according to the purposes for which they were designed. It
also reveals the inter-relatedness amongst the systems. This design-centered
approach contrasts with predominant methods-based surveys and facilitates the

Algorithmic Compositional Methods and their Role in Genesis: A Multi-Functional Real-Time Computer Music System
Algorithmic procedures have been applied in computer music systems to generate compositional products using conventional musical formalism, extensions of such musical formalism and extra-musical disciplines such as mathematical models. This research investigates the applicability of such algorithmic methodologies for real-time musical composition, culminating in Genesis, a multi-functional real-time computer music system written for Mac OS X in the SuperCollider object-oriented programming language, and contained in the accompanying DVD. Through an extensive graphical user interface, Genesis offers musicians the opportunity to explore the application of the sonic features of real-time sound-objects to designated generative processes via different models of interaction such as unsupervised musical composition by Genesis and networked control of external Genesis instances. As a result of the applied interactive, generative and analytical methods, Genesis forms a unique compositional process, with a compositional product that reflects the character of its interactions between the sonic features of real-time sound-objects and its selected algorithmic procedures.
Within this thesis, the technologies involved in algorithmic methodologies used for compositional processes, and the concepts that define their constructs are described, with consequent detailing of their selection and application in Genesis, with audio examples of algorithmic compositional methods demonstrated on the accompanying DVD. To demonstrate the real-time compositional abilities of Genesis, free explorations with instrumentalists, along with studio recordings of the compositional processes available in Genesis are presented in audiovisual examples contained in the accompanying DVD. The evaluation of the Genesis system’s capability to form a real-time compositional process, thereby maintaining real-time interaction between the sonic features of real-time sound objects and its selected algorithmic compositional methods, focuses on existing evaluation techniques founded in HCI and the qualitative issues such evaluation methods present. In terms of the compositional products generated by Genesis, the challenges in quantifying and qualifying its compositional outputs are identified, demonstrating the intricacies of assessing generative methods of compositional processes, and their impact on a resulting compositional product. The thesis concludes by considering further advances and applications of Genesis, and inviting further dissemination of the Genesis system and promotion of research into evaluative methods of generative techniques, with the hope that this may provide additional insight into the relative success of products generated by real-time algorithmic compositional processes
A Survey of AI Music Generation Tools and Models
In this work, we provide a comprehensive survey of AI music generation tools,
including both research projects and commercialized applications. To conduct
our analysis, we classified music generation approaches into three categories:
parameter-based, text-based, and visual-based classes. Our survey highlights
the diverse possibilities and functional features of these tools, which cater
to a wide range of users, from regular listeners to professional musicians. We
observed that each tool has its own set of advantages and limitations. As a
result, we have compiled a comprehensive list of these factors that should be
considered during the tool selection process. Moreover, our survey offers
critical insights into the underlying mechanisms and challenges of AI music
generation
Automatic transcription of polyphonic music exploiting temporal evolution
PhDAutomatic music transcription is the process of converting an audio recording
into a symbolic representation using musical notation. It has numerous applications
in music information retrieval, computational musicology, and the
creation of interactive systems. Even for expert musicians, transcribing polyphonic
pieces of music is not a trivial task, and while the problem of automatic
pitch estimation for monophonic signals is considered to be solved, the creation
of an automated system able to transcribe polyphonic music without setting
restrictions on the degree of polyphony and the instrument type still remains
open.
In this thesis, research on automatic transcription is performed by explicitly
incorporating information on the temporal evolution of sounds. First efforts address
the problem by focusing on signal processing techniques and by proposing
audio features utilising temporal characteristics. Techniques for note onset and
offset detection are also utilised for improving transcription performance. Subsequent
approaches propose transcription models based on shift-invariant probabilistic
latent component analysis (SI-PLCA), modeling the temporal evolution
of notes in a multiple-instrument case and supporting frequency modulations in
produced notes. Datasets and annotations for transcription research have also
been created during this work. Proposed systems have been privately as well as
publicly evaluated within the Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange
(MIREX) framework. Proposed systems have been shown to outperform several
state-of-the-art transcription approaches.
Developed techniques have also been employed for other tasks related to music
technology, such as for key modulation detection, temperament estimation,
and automatic piano tutoring. Finally, proposed music transcription models
have also been utilized in a wider context, namely for modeling acoustic scenes
Effect of nano black rice husk ash on the chemical and physical properties of porous concrete pavement
Black rice husk is a waste from this agriculture industry. It has been found that majority inorganic element in rice husk is silica. In this study, the effect of Nano from black rice husk ash (BRHA) on the chemical and physical properties of concrete pavement was investigated. The BRHA produced from uncontrolled burning at rice factory was taken. It was then been ground using laboratory mill with steel balls and steel rods. Four different grinding grades of BRHA were examined. A rice husk ash dosage of 10% by weight of binder was used throughout the experiments. The chemical and physical properties of the Nano BRHA mixtures were evaluated using fineness test, X-ray Fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the compressive strength test was used to evaluate the performance of porous concrete pavement. Generally, the results show that the optimum grinding time was 63 hours. The result also indicated that the use of Nano black rice husk ash ground for 63hours produced concrete with good strengt
Computational Creativity and Music Generation Systems: An Introduction to the State of the Art
Computational Creativity is a multidisciplinary field that tries to obtain creative behaviors from computers. One of its most prolific subfields is that of Music Generation (also called Algorithmic Composition or Musical Metacreation), that uses computational means to compose music. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of this research field, it is sometimes hard to define precise goals and to keep track of what problems can be considered solved by state-of-the-art systems and what instead needs further developments. With this survey, we try to give a complete introduction to those who wish to explore Computational Creativity and Music Generation. To do so, we first give a picture of the research on the definition and the evaluation of creativity, both human and computational, needed to understand how computational means can be used to obtain creative behaviors and its importance within Artificial Intelligence studies. We then review the state of the art of Music Generation Systems, by citing examples for all the main approaches to music generation, and by listing the open challenges that were identified by previous reviews on the subject. For each of these challenges, we cite works that have proposed solutions, describing what still needs to be done and some possible directions for further research
