    Dynamic performance improvement of an ultra-lift Luo DC–DC converter by using a type-2 fuzzy neural controller

    © 2018 Due to the uncertainty associated with the structure and electrical elements of DC–DC converters and the nonlinear performance of these modules, designing an effective controller is highly complicated and also technically challenging. This paper employs a new control approach based on type-2 fuzzy neural controller (T2FNC) in order to improve the dynamic response of an ultra-lift Luo DC–DC converter under different operational conditions. The proposed controller can rapidly stabilize the output voltage of converter to expected values by tuning the converter switching duty cycle. This controller can tackle the uncertainties associated with the structure of converters, measured control signals and measuring devices. Moreover, a new intelligent method based on firefly algorithm is applied to tune the parameters of T2FNC. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approach, the proposed controller is compared to PI and fuzzy controllers under different operational conditions. Results validate efficiency of proposed T2FNC

    Common rail is one of the most important components in a diesel and gasoline direct injection system. It features a high-pressure (100 bar) fuel rail feeding solenoid valves, as opposed to a low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors. Third-generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for increased precision, with fuel pressures up to 2,500 bar. The purpose of this review paper is to investigate the technology and research in fuel injectors common rail system. This review paper focuses on component of common rail injection system, pioneer of common rail injection, characteristics of common rail injection system, method to reduce smoke and NOx emission simultaneously and impact of common rail injection system. Based on our research, it can be concluded that common rail injection gives many benefit such as good for the engine performance, safe to use, and for to reduce the emission of the vehicle. Fuel injection common rail system is the modern technology that must be developed. Nowadays, our earth is polluting by vehicle output such as smoke. If the common rail system is developed, it can reduce the pollution and keep our atmosphere clean and safe

    PhD ThesisEnergy conversion efficiency is an important factor for the long-term feasibility of photovoltaic systems. Significant work has been carried out into improving the effectiveness of solar arrays in recent years. In addition, there has been substantial research into novel power converter topologies for maximum energy efficiency. However, in photovoltaic applications, even the most promising power converter topologies do not necessarily guarantee optimum performance under all operating conditions. For instance, the efficiency of the power conversion stage may be excellent during periods of high irradiance, but significantly lower in poorer light conditions. This work attempts to address this problem, by seeking to achieve higher energy conversion efficiency under sub-optimal conditions. In this thesis, stand-alone photovoltaic systems using DC-DC boost converters are considered. An interleaved boost converter with novel switch adaptive control scheme is designed to maximise system efficiency over a wider range of real-time operating atmospheric conditions and with different load conditions without incurring significant additional cost

    Intelligent STATCOM Voltage Regulation using Fuzzy Logic Control

    Reactive power compensation is a very important and challenging task in electrical power systems today. Future trends foreseen in power systems such as high interconnectivity and the integration of renewable energy resources produce even more issues related to power system control and stability. Flexible AC transmission systems are vastly used in power systems in order to mitigate several performance aspects found in typical power systems. One shunt connected device in particular, STATCOM, is very powerful and commonly used in voltage regulation at the power transmission level. STATCOM uses voltage sourced converters to inject or absorb reactive power from the power grid as commanded to stabilize the transmission line voltage at the point of connection. The control of STATCOM has relied historically on using traditional PI controllers, however, since the dynamic response of STATCOM highly affects its ability to perform its task, improving the capabilities of STATCOM using more advanced control approaches has become vital for both manufacturers and power systems operators. Fuzzy logic control, as one area of artificial intelligence techniques, has been emerging in recent years as a complement to the conventional methods in various areas of power systems control. The most significant advantage of fuzzy controller as an intelligent controller is that it doesn’t require mathematical modelling. It is robust and nonlinear in its nature, and expert’s knowledge can be utilized in generating control rules. The main contribution is to use fuzzy logic control theory to design a pure fuzzy logic control and another fuzzy adaptive PI control strategies for STATCOM that are superior in performance to traditional PI control approach. This will increase STATCOM’s ability to seamlessly perform their task in voltage regulation. This work investigates the performance of classical PI controlled STATCOM then compares it with fuzzy logic based STATCOM and fuzzy adaptive PI controlled STATCOM. Simulations done using MATLAB on a three generator test system show that adaptive fuzzy PI control technique is faster in responding to voltage variations and better in tracking the reactive current reference. Results also show that a direct control using fuzzy logic provides even faster voltage regulation and acts almost as a perfect tracker for reference reactive current

    Interleaved Buck Converter Based Shunt Active Power Filter with Shoot-through Elimination for Power Quality Improvement

    The “shoot-through” phenomenon defined as the rush of current that occurs while both the devices are ON at the same time of a particular limb is one of the most perilous failure modes encountered in conventional inverter circuits of active power filter (APF). Shoot-through phenomenon has few distinct disadvantages like; it introduces typical ringing, increases temperature rise in power switches, causes higher Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and reduces the efficiency of the circuit. To avert the “shoot-through”, dead time control could be added, but it deteriorates the harmonic compensation level. This dissertation presents active power filters (APFs) based on interleaved buck (IB) converter. Compared to traditional shunt active power filters, the presented IB APFs have enhanced reliability with no shoot-through phenomenon. The instantaneous active and reactive power (p-q) scheme and instantaneous active and reactive current component (id-iq) control scheme has been implemented to mitigate the source current harmonics. Type-1 and Type-2 fuzzy logic controller with different membership functions (MFs) viz. Triangular, Trapezoidal and Gaussian have been implemented for the optimal harmonic compensation by controlling the dc-link voltage and minimizing the undesirable losses occurred inside the APF. Additionally, the adaptive hysteresis band current controller (AHBCC) is being implemented to get the nearly constant switching frequency. The performance of the control strategies and controllers for the presented IB APF topologies has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and dc-link voltage regulation under sinusoidal, unbalanced sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal voltage source condition. This dissertation is concerned with the different topologies of 3-phase 4-wire IB APFs viz. split capacitor (2C) topology, 4-leg (4L) topology, transformer based full-bridge IB APF or single capacitor based FB IB APF (1C 3 FB IB APF) and full-bridge IB APF (FB IB APF) for low to medium power application. Moreover, APF topology is now being expanded to multilevel VSIs for high power application. Thanks to flexible modular design, transformerless connection, extended voltage and power output, less maintenance and higher fault tolerance, the cascade inverters are good candidates for active power filters with the utility of high power application. The cascaded FB IB APF is modelled with no shoot-through phenomenon by using multicarrier phase shifted PWM scheme. Extensive simulations have been carried out in the MATLAB / Simulink environment and also verified in the OPAL-RT LAB using OP5142-Spartan 3 FPGA to support the feasibility of presented IB APF topologies, control strategies and controllers during steady and dynamic condition. The performance shows that IB-APF topologies bring the THD of the source current well below 5% adhering to IEEE-519 standard. A comparison has also been made, based on SDP (switch device power) between the IB-APF topologies

    POWER CONDITIONING UNIT FOR SMALL SCALE HYBRID PV-WIND GENERATION SYSTEM

    Small-scale renewable energy systems are becoming increasingly popular due to soaring fuel prices and due to technological advancements which reduce the cost of manufacturing. Solar and wind energies, among other renewable energy sources, are the most available ones globally. The hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and wind power system has a higher capability to deliver continuous power with reduced energy storage requirements and therefore results in better utilization of power conversion and control equipment than either of the individual sources. Power conditioning units (p.c.u.) for such small-scale hybrid PV-wind generation systems have been proposed in this study. The system was connected to the grid, but it could also operate in standalone mode if the grid was unavailable. The system contains a local controller for every energy source and the grid inverter. Besides, it contains the supervisory controller. For the wind generator side, small-scale vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are attractive due to their ability to capture wind from different directions without using a yaw. One difficulty with VAWTs is to prevent over-speeding and component over-loading at excessive wind velocities. The proposed local controller for the wind generator is based on the current and voltage measured on the dc side of the rectifier connected to the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is provided in normal operation under the rated speed using a dc/dc boost converter. For high wind velocities, the suggested local controller controls the electric power in order to operate the turbine in the stall region. This high wind velocity control strategy attenuates the stress in the system while it smoothes the power generated. It is shown that the controller is able to stabilize the nonlinear system using an adaptive current feedback loop. Simulation and experimental results are presented. The PV generator side controller is designed to work in systems with multiple energy sources, such as those studied in this thesis. One of the most widely used methods to maximize the output PV power is the hill climbing technique. This study gives guidelines for designing both the perturbation magnitude and the time interval between consecutive perturbations for such a technique. These guidelines would improve the maximum power point tracking efficiency. According to these guidelines, a variable step MPPT algorithm with reduced power mode is designed and applied to the system. The algorithm is validated by simulation and experimental results. A single phase H-bridge inverter is proposed to supply the load and to connect the grid. Generally, a current controller injects active power with a controlled power factor and constant dc link voltage in the grid connected mode. However, in the standalone mode, it injects active power with constant ac output voltage and a power factor which depends on the load. The current controller for both modes is based on a newly developed peak current control (p.c.c.) with selective harmonic elimination. A design procedure has been proposed for the controller. Then, the method was demonstrated by simulation. The problem of the dc current injection to the grid has been investigated for such inverters. The causes of dc current injection are analyzed, and a measurement circuit is then proposed to control the inverter for dc current injection elimination. Characteristics of the proposed method are demonstrated, using simulation and experimental results. At the final stage of the study, a supervisory controller is demonstrated, which manages the different operating states of the system during starting, grid-connected and standalone modes. The operating states, designed for every mode, have been defined in such a hybrid model to allow stability and smooth transition between these states. The supervisory controller switches the system between the different modes and states according to the availability of the utility grid, renewable energy generators, the state of charge (SOC) of energy storage batteries, and the load. The p.c.u. including the supervisory controller has been verified in the different modes and states by simulation
