Based on existing models, this paper presents a systematic approach to extract and parameterize each subtype of low-voltage (LV) power line noise between 150 kHz and 10 MHz.     Fifty Years of Noise Modeling and Mitigation in Power-Line Communications.

    Building on the ubiquity of electric power infrastructure, power line communications (PLC) has been successfully used in diverse application scenarios, including the smart grid and in-home broadband communications systems as well as industrial and home automation. However, the power line channel exhibits deleterious properties, one of which is its hostile noise environment. This article aims for providing a review of noise modeling and mitigation techniques in PLC. Specifically, a comprehensive review of representative noise models developed over the past fifty years is presented, including both the empirical models based on measurement campaigns and simplified mathematical models. Following this, we provide an extensive survey of the suite of noise mitigation schemes, categorizing them into mitigation at the transmitter as well as parametric and non-parametric techniques employed at the receiver. Furthermore, since the accuracy of channel estimation in PLC is affected by noise, we review the literature of joint noise mitigation and channel estimation solutions. Finally, a number of directions are outlined for future research on both noise modeling and mitigation in PLC

    Development of a Wideband PLC Channel Emulator with Random Noise Scenarios

    Channel emulators are an integral part of the test equipment that offers a more practical approach to testing new communication devices. It is imperative though to develop the emulator such that it best represents the channel. For PLC channel emulator, the channel representation can be either topdown or bottom-up. In this paper, the top-down characterisation and reference channels are used. In this approach, statistical measurements of the characteristics of the power line were conducted, and the closest mathematical representation is presented. The emulator operates in the frequency domain utilising 4096 transform points for the FFT process and 14 fractional bits for fixed point presentation. This number of bits allowed the emulator to sufficiently generate an average of 0.4% error between the software simulation results and the hardware test results. The input signal is converted to an LVDS signal by the FMC151 which serves as the AFE of the emulator. Two linear regulators block are used to convert both the negative and positive values of the input signal. The random generation of noise reduced the taxing efforts of adding different combinations of noise thus providing ease in focusing on the analysis of the resulting waveform

    The present study addresses the calibration of four types of partial discharge (PD) emulators used in the development of a PD Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Three PD emulators have been constructed: a floating-electrode emulator, and two internal PD emulators. Both DC and AC high-voltage power supplies are used to initiate PD, which is measured using concurrent free-space radiometry (FSR) and a galvanic contact method based on the IEC 60270 standard. The emulators have been measured and simulated, and a good agreement has been found for the radiated fields. A new method of estimating the absolute PD activity level from radiometric measurements is proposed

    Wi-Fi Denial of Service Attack on Wired Analog RF Channel Emulator

    This report presents the design and implementation of an analog wireless channel emulator to examine various denial of service attacks in multiple mobile scenarios. The scenarios emulated in this project involve three node topologies of wireless interferers (Wi-Fi radios), including a software defined radio that transmits one of three denial of service (DoS) waveforms. The testbed was functional and met the original specifications. Results from mobile experiments show a clear distinction in performance among the three DoS waveforms depending on the node topology; a digital waveform using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) is most effective at reducing total network throughput at close range while sweep waveforms exhibit minor throughput reduction from a greater distance
