    Reliable and efficient data dissemination schemein VANET: a review

    Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET), identified as a mobile ad hoc network MANETs with several added constraints. Basically, in VANETs, the network is established on the fly based on the availability of vehicles on roads and supporting infrastructures along the roads, such as base stations. Vehicles and road-side infrastructures are required to provide communication facilities, particularly when enough vehicles are not available on the roads for effective communication. VANETs are crucial for providing a wide range of safety and non-safety applications to road users. However, the specific fundamental problem in VANET is the challenge of creating effective communication between two fast-moving vehicles. Therefore, message routing is an issue for many safety and non-safety of VANETs applications. The challenge in designing a robust but reliable message dissemination technique is primarily due to the stringent QoS requirements of the VANETs safety applications.     A Multi-Objectif Genetic Algorithm-Based Adaptive Weighted Clustering Protocol in VANET

    International audience—Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) is the main component that is used recently for the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). VANET has a highly dynamic and portioned network topology due to the constant and rapid movement of vehicles. Recently, the clustering algorithms are widely used as the control schemes to make VANET topology less dynamic for MAC, routing and security protocols. An efficient clustering algorithm must take into consideration all the necessary information related to node mobility. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Weighted Clustering Protocol (AWCP), specially designed for vehicular networks, which takes the highway ID, direction of vehicles, position, speed and the number of neighbors vehicles into account in order to enhance the network topology stability. However, the multiple control parameters of our AWCP, make parameter tuning a non-trivial problem. In order to optimize AWCP protocol, we define a multi-objective problem whose inputs are the AWCPs parameters and whose objectives are: providing stable cluster structure as possible, maximizing data delivery rate, and reducing the clustering overhead. We then face this multi-objective problem with the the Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). We evaluate and compare its performance with other multi-objective optimization techniques: Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Multi-objective Differential Evolution (MODE). The experiments analysis reveal that NSGA-II improves the results of MOPSO and MODE in terms of the spacing, spread, and ratio of non-dominated solutions and generational distance metrics used for comparison

    Efficient Information Dissemination in Vehicular Networks with Privacy Protection

    Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a key component of intelligent transportation System (ITS). In VANETs, vehicles and roadside units exchange information for the purpose of navigation, safe driving, entertainment and so on. The high mobility of vehicles makes efficient and private communications in VANETs a big challenge. Improving the performance of information dissemination while protecting data privacy is studied in this research. Meet-Table based information dissemination method is first proposed, so as to improve the information dissemination, and to efficiently distribute information via utilizing roadside units, Cloud Computing, and Fog Computing. A clustering algorithm is proposed as well, to improve the stability for self-organized cluster-based dissemination in VANETs on highways. Then, fuzzy neural networks are used to improve the stability and security of routing protocols, AODV, and design a novel protocol, GSS-AODV. To further protect data privacy, a multi-antenna based information protection approach for vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V) communications is also proposed

Esta tesis se centra en la mejora de la seguridad vial y la reducción de la siniestralidad mediante Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS). El primer paso consiste en obtener una difusión eficiente de los mensajes de advertencia sobre situaciones potencialmente peligrosas. Hemos desarrollado un marco para simular el intercambio de mensajes entre vehículos, utilizado para proponer esquemas eficientes de difusión. También demostramos que la disposición de las calles tiene gran influencia sobre la eficiencia del proceso. Nuestros algoritmos de difusión son parte de una arquitectura más amplia (e-NOTIFY) capaz de detectar accidentes de tráfico e informar a los servicios de emergencia. El desarrollo y evaluación de un prototipo demostró la viabilidad del sistema y cómo podría ayudar a reducir el número de víctimas en carretera

    Using Road IDs to Enhance Clustering in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks

    International audience—Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) where vehicles act as mobile nodes is an instance of Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs), which are essentially developed for intelligent transportation systems. A challenging problem when designing communication protocols in VANETs is coping with high vehicle mobility, which causes frequent changes in the network topology and leads to frequent breaks in communication. The clustering technique is being developed to reduce the impact of mobility between neighboring vehicles. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Weighted Cluster Protocol for VANETs, which is a road map dependent and uses road IDs and movement direction in order to make the clusters structure as stable as possible. The experimental results reveal that AWCP outperforms four other most commonly used clustering protocols in terms of control packet overhead, the packet delivery ratio, and the average cluster lifetime, which are the most usual metrics used for comparing performance

    An efficient cluster-based service model for vehicular ad-hoc networks on motorways

    Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) can, but not limited to provide users with useful traffic and environmental information services to improve travelling efficiency and road safety. The communications systems used in VANET include vehicle-to-vehicle communications (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (V2I). The transmission delay and the energy consumption cost for maintaining good-quality communications vary depending on the transmission distance and transmission power, especially on motorways where vehicles are moving at higher speeds. In addition, in modern transportation systems, electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, which require a more efficient battery management, this also call for an efficient way of vehicular transmission. In this project, a cluster-based two-way data service model to provide real-time data services for vehicles on motorways is designed. The design promotes efficient cooperation between V2V and V2I, or namely V2X, with the objective of improving both service and energy performance for vehicular networks with traffic in the same direction. Clustering is an effective way of applying V2X in VANET systems, where the cluster head will take the main responsibility of exchanging data with Road Side Units (RSU) and other cluster members. The model includes local service data collection, data aggregation, and service data downloading. We use SUMO and OMNET++ to simulate the traffic scenarios and the network communications. Two different models (V2X and V2I) are compared to evaluate the performance of the proposed model under different flow speeds. From the results, we conclude that the cluster-based service model outperforms the non-clustered model in terms of service successful ratio, network throughput and energy consumption

    Enhanced clustering based routing protocol in vehicular ad‐hocnetworks

    A vehicular ad‐hoc network (VANET) is derived from a mobile ad‐hoc network that is a part of less infrastructure network design. Vehicular communication in VANET can be achieved using vehicle‐to‐infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle‐to‐vehicle (V2V) communication. A vehicle communicates with other vehicles through onboard units while communicating with roadside units in an infrastructure mode. Secure clustering is required for the communication between nodes in the whole network. The fundamental problem with the VANET is the instability of the network that occurs due to vehicles' mobile nature, which decreases the network's efficiency. This research proposes an enhanced cluster‐based lifetime protocol ECBLTR that focuses on maximising the network's stability of routing and average throughput. The Sugeno model fuzzy inference system is used for assessing the cluster head (CH) that takes residual energy, local distance, node degree, concentration, and distance from the base station as input parameters. Our enhanced routing protocol shows that the proper channel model with an efficient routing protocol enhances the link throughput of the VANET for fixed network size. Our results show an efficient selection method of CH through the fuzzy system and a 10% increase in network lifetime. Furthermore, performance evaluation also demonstrates the impact of network sizes and routing protocols on packet delivery ratio and packet loss, average end‐to‐end delay, and overhead transmission

    Optimization of vehicular networks in smart cities: from agile optimization to learnheuristics and simheuristics

    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a fundamental component of intelligent transportation systems in smart cities. With the support of open and real-time data, these networks of inter-connected vehicles constitute an ‘Internet of vehicles’ with the potential to significantly enhance citizens’ mobility and last-mile delivery in urban, peri-urban, and metropolitan areas. However, the proper coordination and logistics of VANETs raise a number of optimization challenges that need to be solved. After reviewing the state of the art on the concepts of VANET optimization and open data in smart cities, this paper discusses some of the most relevant optimization challenges in this area. Since most of the optimization problems are related to the need for real-time solutions or to the consideration of uncertainty and dynamic environments, the paper also discusses how some VANET challenges can be addressed with the use of agile optimization algorithms and the combination of metaheuristics with simulation and machine learning methods. The paper also offers a numerical analysis that measures the impact of using these optimization techniques in some related problems. Our numerical analysis, based on real data from Open Data Barcelona, demonstrates that the constructive heuristic outperforms the random scenario in the CDP combined with vehicular networks, resulting in maximizing the minimum distance between facilities while meeting capacity requirements with the fewest facilities.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
