    Applications of Soft Computing in Mobile and Wireless Communications

    Soft computing is a synergistic combination of artificial intelligence methodologies to model and solve real world problems that are either impossible or too difficult to model mathematically. Furthermore, the use of conventional modeling techniques demands rigor, precision and certainty, which carry computational cost. On the other hand, soft computing utilizes computation, reasoning and inference to reduce computational cost by exploiting tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty, partial truth and approximation. In addition to computational cost savings, soft computing is an excellent platform for autonomic computing, owing to its roots in artificial intelligence. Wireless communication networks are associated with much uncertainty and imprecision due to a number of stochastic processes such as escalating number of access points, constantly changing propagation channels, sudden variations in network load and random mobility of users. This reality has fuelled numerous applications of soft computing techniques in mobile and wireless communications.     The Cyborg Astrobiologist: Testing a Novelty-Detection Algorithm on Two Mobile Exploration Systems at Rivas Vaciamadrid in Spain and at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah

    (ABRIDGED) In previous work, two platforms have been developed for testing computer-vision algorithms for robotic planetary exploration (McGuire et al. 2004b,2005; Bartolo et al. 2007). The wearable-computer platform has been tested at geological and astrobiological field sites in Spain (Rivas Vaciamadrid and Riba de Santiuste), and the phone-camera has been tested at a geological field site in Malta. In this work, we (i) apply a Hopfield neural-network algorithm for novelty detection based upon color, (ii) integrate a field-capable digital microscope on the wearable computer platform, (iii) test this novelty detection with the digital microscope at Rivas Vaciamadrid, (iv) develop a Bluetooth communication mode for the phone-camera platform, in order to allow access to a mobile processing computer at the field sites, and (v) test the novelty detection on the Bluetooth-enabled phone-camera connected to a netbook computer at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. This systems engineering and field testing have together allowed us to develop a real-time computer-vision system that is capable, for example, of identifying lichens as novel within a series of images acquired in semi-arid desert environments. We acquired sequences of images of geologic outcrops in Utah and Spain consisting of various rock types and colors to test this algorithm. The algorithm robustly recognized previously-observed units by their color, while requiring only a single image or a few images to learn colors as familiar, demonstrating its fast learning capability.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the International Journal of Astrobiolog

    Common Radio Resource Management Strategies for Quality of Service Support in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Hoy en día existen varias tecnologías que coexisten en una misma zona formando un sistema heterogéneo. Además, este hecho se espera que se vuelva más acentuado con todas las nuevas tecnologías que se están estandarizando actualmente. Hasta ahora, generalmente son los usuarios los que eligen la tecnología a la que se van a conectar, ya sea configurando sus terminales o usando terminales distintos. Sin embargo, esta solución es incapaz de aprovechar al máximo todos los recursos. Para ello es necesario un nuevo conjunto de estrategias. Estas estrategias deben gestionar los recursos radioeléctricos conjuntamente y asegurar la satisfacción de la calidad de servicio de los usuarios. Siguiendo esta idea, esta Tesis propone dos nuevos algoritmos. El primero es un algoritmo de asignación dinámica de recusos conjunto (JDRA) capaz de asignar recursos a usuarios y de distribuir usuarios entre tecnologías al mismo tiempo. El algoritmo está formulado en términos de un problema de optimización multi-objetivo que se resuelve usando redes neuronales de Hopfield (HNNs). Las HNNs son interesantes ya que se supone que pueden alcanzar soluciones sub-óptimas en cortos periodos de tiempo. Sin embargo, implementaciones reales de las HNNs en ordenadores pierden esta rápida respuesta. Por ello, en esta Tesis se analizan las causas y se estudian posibles mejoras. El segundo algoritmo es un algoritmo de control de admisión conjunto (JCAC) que admite y rechaza usuarios teniendo en cuenta todas las tecnologías al mismo tiempo. La principal diferencia con otros algorimos propuestos es que éstos últimos toman las dicisiones de admisión en cada tecnología por separado. Por ello, se necesita de algún mecanismo para seleccionar la tecnología a la que los usuarios se van a conectar. Por el contrario, la técnica propuesta en esta Tesis es capaz de tomar decisiones en todo el sistema heterogéneo.     A Neural Radiance Field-Based Architecture for Intelligent Multilayered View Synthesis

    A mobile ad hoc network is made up of a number of wireless portable nodes that spontaneously come together en route for establish a transitory network with no need for any central management. A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is made up of a sizable and reasonably dense community of mobile nodes that travel across any terrain and rely solely on wireless interfaces for communication, not on any well before centralized management. Furthermore, routing be supposed to offer a method for instantly delivering data across a network between any two nodes. Finding the best packet routing from across infrastructure is the major issue, though. The proposed protocol's major goal is to identify the least-expensive nominal capacity acquisition that assures the transportation of realistic transport that ensures its durability in the event of any node failure. This study suggests the Optimized Route Selection via Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) Strategy as a way to improve on-demand source routing systems. Predicting Route Failure and energy Utilization is used to pick the path during the routing phase. Proposed work assess the results of the comparisons based on performance parameters like as energy usage, packet delivery rate (PDR), and end-to-end (E2E) delay. The outcome demonstrates that the proposed strategy is preferable and increases network lifetime while lowering node energy consumption and typical E2E delay under the majority of network performance measures and factors

    Parallel Architectures for Planetary Exploration Requirements (PAPER)

    The Parallel Architectures for Planetary Exploration Requirements (PAPER) project is essentially research oriented towards technology insertion issues for NASA's unmanned planetary probes. It was initiated to complement and augment the long-term efforts for space exploration with particular reference to NASA/LaRC's (NASA Langley Research Center) research needs for planetary exploration missions of the mid and late 1990s. The requirements for space missions as given in the somewhat dated Advanced Information Processing Systems (AIPS) requirements document are contrasted with the new requirements from JPL/Caltech involving sensor data capture and scene analysis. It is shown that more stringent requirements have arisen as a result of technological advancements. Two possible architectures, the AIPS Proof of Concept (POC) configuration and the MAX Fault-tolerant dataflow multiprocessor, were evaluated. The main observation was that the AIPS design is biased towards fault tolerance and may not be an ideal architecture for planetary and deep space probes due to high cost and complexity. The MAX concepts appears to be a promising candidate, except that more detailed information is required. The feasibility for adding neural computation capability to this architecture needs to be studied. Key impact issues for architectural design of computing systems meant for planetary missions were also identified

    Cognitive social and affective neuroscience of patients with spinal cord injury

    A successful human-environment interaction requires a continuous integration of information concerning body parts, object features and affective dynamics. Multiple neuropsychological studies show that tools can be integrated into the representation of one's own body. In particular, a tool that participates in the conscious movement of the person is added to the dynamic representation the body – often called “Body schema” – and may even affect social interaction. In light of this the wheelchair is treated as an extension of the disabled body, essentially replacing limbs that don't function properly, but it can also be a symbol of frailty and weakness. In a series of experiments, I studied plastic changes of action, tool and body representation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Due to their peripheral loss of sensorimotor functions, in the absence of brain lesions and spared higher order cognitive functions, these patients represent an excellent model to study this topic in a multi-faceted way, investigating both fundamental mechanisms and possible therapeutic interventions. In a series of experiments, I developed new behavioral methods to measure the phenomenological aspects of tool embodiment (Chapter 3), to study its functional and neural correlates (Chapter 4) and to assess the possible computational model underpinning these phenomena (Chapter 5). These tasks have been used to describe changes in tool, action and body representation following the injury (Chapter 3 and 4), but also social interactions (Chapter 7), with the aim of giving a complete portrait of change following such damage. I found that changes in the function (wheelchair use) and the structure (body brain disconnection) of the physical body, plastically modulate tool, action and body representation. Social context and social interaction are also shaped by the new configuration of bodily representations. Such a high degree of plasticity suggests that our sense of body is not given at once, but rather it is constantly constructed and adapted through experience

    Hybridisation of genetic algorithm with simulated annealing for vertical-handover in heterogeneous wireless networks

    To provide the seamless mobility in heterogeneous wireless networks two significant methods, simulated annealing (SA) and genetic algorithms (GAs) are hybrid. In this paradigm, vertical handovers (VHs) are necessary for seamless mobility. In this paper, the hybrid algorithm has the ability to find the optimal network to connect with a good quality of service (QoS) in accordance with the user's preferences. The intelligent algorithm was developed to provide solutions near to real time and to avoid slow and considerable computations according to the features of the mobile devices. Moreover, a cost function is used to sustain the chosen QoS during transition between networks, which is measured in terms of the bandwidth, BER, ABR, SNR and monetary cost. Simulation results presented that choosing the SA rules would minimise the cost function and the GA-SA algorithm could reduce the number of unnecessary handovers, and thereby avoid the 'Ping-Pong' effect
