    A Low Area, Switched-Resistor Based Fractional-N Synthesizer Applied to a MEMS-Based Programmable Oscillator

    Abstract-MEMS-based oscillators have recently become a topic of interest as integrated alternatives are sought for quartz-based frequency references. When seeking a programmable solution, a key component of such systems is a low power, low area fractional-N synthesizer, which also provides a convenient path for compensating changes in the MEMS resonant frequency with temperature and process. We present several techniques enabling efficient implementation of this synthesizer, including a switched-resistor loop filter topology that avoids a charge pump and boosts effective resistance to save area, a high gain phase detector that lowers the impact of loop filter noise, and a switched capacitor frequency detector that provides initial frequency acquisition. The entire synthesizer with LC VCO occupies less than 0.36 sq. mm in 0.18 m CMOS. Chip power consumption is 3.7 mA at 3.3 V supply (20 MHz output, no load).     RF MEMS reference oscillators platform for wireless communications

    A complete platform for RF MEMS reference oscillator is built to replace bulky quartz from mobile devices, thus reducing size and cost. The design targets LTE transceivers. A low phase noise 76.8 MHz reference oscillator is designed using material temperature compensated AlN-on-silicon resonator. The thesis proposes a system combining piezoelectric resonator with low loading CMOS cross coupled series resonance oscillator to reach state-of-the-art LTE phase noise specifications. The designed resonator is a two port fundamental width extensional mode resonator. The resonator characterized by high unloaded quality factor in vacuum is designed with low temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) using as compensation material which enhances the TCF from - 3000 ppm to 105 ppm across temperature ranges of -40˚C to 85˚C. By using a series resonant CMOS oscillator, phase noise of -123 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz, and -162 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset is achieved. The oscillator’s integrated RMS jitter is 106 fs (10 kHz–20 MHz), consuming 850 ÎŒA, with startup time is 250ÎŒs, achieving a Figure-of-merit (FOM) of 216 dB. Electronic frequency compensation is presented to further enhance the frequency stability of the oscillator. Initial frequency offset of 8000 ppm and temperature drift errors are combined and further addressed electronically. A simple digital compensation circuitry generates a compensation word as an input to 21 bit MASH 1 -1-1 sigma delta modulator incorporated in RF LTE fractional N-PLL for frequency compensation. Temperature is sensed using low power BJT band-gap front end circuitry with 12 bit temperature to digital converter characterized by a resolution of 0.075˚C. The smart temperature sensor consumes only 4.6 ÎŒA. 700 MHz band LTE signal proved to have the stringent phase noise and frequency resolution specifications among all LTE bands. For this band, the achieved jitter value is 1.29 ps and the output frequency stability is 0.5 ppm over temperature ranges from -40˚C to 85˚C.     Internet of Things (IoT) devices are poised to be the largest market for the semiconductor industry. At the heart of a wireless IoT module is the radio and integral to any radio is the transmitter. Transmitters with low power consumption and small area are crucial to the ubiquity of IoT devices. The fairly simple modulation schemes used in IoT systems makes frequency synthesizer-based (also known as PLL-based) transmitters an ideal candidate for these devices. Because of the reduced number of analog blocks and the simple architecture, PLL-based transmitters lend themselves nicely to the highly integrated, low voltage nanometer digital CMOS processes of today.     Microelectromechanical Systems for Wireless Radio Front-ends and Integrated Frequency References.

    Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have great potential in realizing chip-scale integrated devices for energy-efficient analog spectrum processing. This thesis presents the development of a new class of MEMS resonators and filters integrated with CMOS readout circuits for RF front-ends and integrated timing applications. Circuit-level innovations coupled with new device designs allowed for realizing integrated systems with improved performance compared to standalone devices reported in the literature. The thesis is comprised of two major parts. The first part of the thesis is focused on developing integrated MEMS timing devices. Fused silica is explored as a new structural material for fabricating high-Q vibrating micromechanical resonators. A piezoelectric-on-silica MEMS resonator is demonstrated with a high Q of more than 20,000 and good electromechanical coupling. A low phase noise CMOS reference oscillator is implemented using the MEMS resonator as a mechanical frequency reference. Temperature-stable operation of the MEMS oscillator is realized by ovenizing the platform using an integrated heater. In an alternative scheme, the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of MEMS resonators is utilized for temperature sensing, and active compensation for MEMS oscillators is realized by oven-control using a phase-locked loop (PLL). CMOS circuits are implemented for realizing the PLL-based low-power oven-control system. The active compensation technique realizes a MEMS oscillator with an overall frequency drift within +/- 4 ppm across -40 to 70 °C, without the need for calibration. The CMOS PLL circuits for oven-control is demonstrated with near-zero phase noise invasion on the MEMS oscillators. The properties of PLL-based compensation for realizing ultra-stable MEMS frequency references are studied. In the second part of the thesis, RF MEMS devices, including tunable capacitors, high-Q inductors, and ohmic switches, are fabricated using a surface micromachined integrated passive device (IPD) process. Using this process, an integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) filter has been demonstrated, showing low loss and a small form factor. To further address the issue of narrow in-band interferences in UWB communication, a tunable MEMS bandstop filter is integrated with the bandpass filter with more than an octave frequency tuning range.     Transceiver architectures and sub-mW fast frequency-hopping synthesizers for ultra-low power WSNs

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have the potential to become the third wireless revolution after wireless voice networks in the 80s and wireless data networks in the late 90s. This revolution will finally connect together the physical world of the human and the virtual world of the electronic devices. Though in the recent years large progress in power consumption reduction has been made in the wireless arena in order to increase the battery life, this is still not enough to achieve a wide adoption of this technology. Indeed, while nowadays consumers are used to charge batteries in laptops, mobile phones and other high-tech products, this operation becomes infeasible when scaled up to large industrial, enterprise or home networks composed of thousands of wireless nodes. Wireless sensor networks come as a new way to connect electronic equipments reducing, in this way, the costs associated with the installation and maintenance of large wired networks. To accomplish this task, it is necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the wireless node to a point where energy harvesting becomes feasible and the node energy autonomy exceeds the life time of the wireless node itself. This thesis focuses on the radio design, which is the backbone of any wireless node. A common approach to radio design for WSNs is to start from a very simple radio (like an RFID) adding more functionalities up to the point in which the power budget is reached. In this way, the robustness of the wireless link is traded off for power reducing the range of applications that can draw benefit form a WSN. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to the radio design for WSNs. We started from a proven architecture like Bluetooth, and progressively we removed all the functionalities that are not required for WSNs. The robustness of the wireless link is guaranteed by using a fast frequency hopping spread spectrum technique while the power budget is achieved by optimizing the radio architecture and the frequency hopping synthesizer Two different radio architectures and a novel fast frequency hopping synthesizer are proposed that cover the large space of applications for WSNs. The two architectures make use of the peculiarities of each scenario and, together with a novel fast frequency hopping synthesizer, proved that spread spectrum techniques can be used also in severely power constrained scenarios like WSNs. This solution opens a new window toward a radio design, which ultimately trades off flexibility, rather than robustness, for power consumption. In this way, we broadened the range of applications for WSNs to areas in which security and reliability of the communication link are mandatory

Multiple phase noise theories are considered giving insight into low phase-noise voltage controlled oscillator design. The circuit utilizes a fully symmetric differential voltage controlled oscillator with cascode current starved inverters to reduces current noise. A compact multi-modulus prescaler is presented, based on modified true single-phase clock flip-flops with integrated logic.     Design of a 2.4 Ghz BAW-Based CMOS Transmitter

    In recent years, bulk acoustic wave resonators (BAW) in combination with RF circuits have shown a big potential in achieving the low-power consumption and miniaturization level required to address wireless sensor nodes (WSN) applications. A lot of work has been focused on the receiver side, by integrating BAW resonators with low noise amplifiers (LNA) and in frequency synthesis with the design of BAW-based local oscillators, most of them working at fixed frequency due to their limited tuning range. At the architectural level, this has forced the implementation of several single channel transceivers. This thesis aims at exploring the use of BAW resonators in the transmitter, proposing an architecture capable of taking full advantage of them. The main objective is to develop a transmitter for WSN multi-channel applications able to cover the whole 2.4 GHz ISM band and enable the compatibility with wide-spread standards like Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy. Typical transmissions should thus range from low data rates (typically tens of kb/s) to medium data rates (1 Mb/s), with FSK and GFSK modulation schemes, should be centered on any of the channels provided by these standards and cover a maximum transmission range of some tens of meters. To achieve these targets and circumvent the limited tuning range of the BAW oscillator, an up-conversion transmitter using wide IF is used. The typical spurs problems related to this transmitter architecture are addressed by using a combined suppression based on SSB mixing and selective amplification. The latter is achieved by cointegration of a high efficiency power amplifier with BAW resonators, which allows performing spurs filtering while preserving the efficiency. In particular the selective amplifier is designed by including in the PA analysis the BAW resonator parameters, which allows integrating the BAW filter into the passive network loading the amplifier, participating in the drain voltage shaping. Finally, the frequency synthesis section uses a fractional division plus LC PLL filtering and further integer division to generate the IF signals and exploit the very-low BAW oscillator phase noise. The transmitter has been integrated in a 0.18 ”m standard digital CMOS technology. It allows addressing the whole 80 MHz wide 2.4 GHz ISM band. The unmodulated RF frequency carrier demonstrates a very-low phase noise of –136 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The IF spurs are maintained lower than –48 dBc, satisfying the international regulations for output power up to 10 dBm without the use of any quadrature error compensation in the transmitter. This is achieved thanks to the rejection provided by the SSB mixer and the selective amplifier, which can reach drain efficiency of up to 24% with integrated inductances, including the insertion losses of the BAW filter. The transmitter consumes 35.3 mA at the maximum power of 5.4 dBm under 1.6 V (1.2 V for the PA), while transmitting a 1 Mb/s GFSK signal and complying with both Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy relative and absolute spectrum requirements

    Integrated reference circuits for low-power capacitive sensor interfaces

    This thesis consists of nine publications and an overview of the research topic, which also summarizes the work. The research described in this thesis concentrates on the design of low-power sensor interfaces for capacitive 3-axis micro-accelerometers. The primary goal throughout the thesis is to optimize power dissipation. Because the author made the main contribution to the design of the reference and power management circuits required, the overview part is dominated by the following research topics: current, voltage, and temperature references, frequency references, and voltage regulators. After an introduction to capacitive micro-accelerometers, the work describes the typical integrated readout electronics of a capacitive sensor on the functional level. The readout electronics can be divided into four different functional parts, namely the sensor readout itself, signal post-processing, references, and power management. Before the focus is shifted to the references and further to power management, different ways to realize the sensor readout are briefly discussed. Both current and voltage references are required in most analog and mixed-signal systems. A bandgap voltage reference, which inherently uses at least one current reference, is practical for the generation of an accurate reference voltage. Very similar circuit techniques can be exploited when implementing a temperature reference, the need for which in the sensor readout may be justified by the temperature compensation, for example. The work introduces non-linear frequency references, namely ring and relaxation oscillators, which are very suitable for the generation of the relatively low-frequency clock signals typically needed in the sensor interfaces. Such oscillators suffer from poor jitter and phase noise performance, the quantities of which also deserve discussion in this thesis. Finally, the regulation of the supply voltage using linear regulators is considered. In addition to extending the battery life by providing a low quiescent current, the regulator must be able to supply very low load currents and operate without off-chip capacitors

    Design of a Dual Band Local Positioning System

    This work presents a robust dual band local positioning system (LPS) working in the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz industrial science medical (ISM) bands. Position measurement is based on the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar approach, which uses radio frequency (RF) chirp signals for propagation time and therefore distance measurements. Contrary to state of the art LPS, the presented system uses data from both bands to improve accuracy, precision and robustness. A complete system prototype is designed consisting of base stations and tags encapsulating most of the RF and analogue signal processing in custom integrated circuits. This design approach allows to reduce size and power consumption compared to a hybrid system using off-the-shelf components. Key components are implemented using concepts, which support operation in multiple frequency bands, namely, the receiver consisting of a low noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, frequency synthesizer with a wide band voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) having broadband chirp generation capabilities and a dual band power amplifier. System imperfections occurring in FMCW radar systems are modelled. Effects neglected in literature such as compression, intermodulation, the influence of automatic gain control, blockers and spurious emissions are modeled. The results are used to derive a specification set for the circuit design. Position estimation from measured distances is done using an enhanced version of the grid search algorithm, which makes use of data from multiple frequency bands. The algorithm is designed to be easily and efficiently implemented in embedded systems. Measurements show a coverage range of the system of at least 245m. Ranging accuracy in an outdoor scenario can be as low as 8.2cm. Comparative dual band position measurements prove an effective outlier filtering in indoor and outdoor scenarios compared to single band results, yielding in a large gain of accuracy. Positioning accuracy in an indoor scenario with an area of 276mÂČ can be improved from 1.27m at 2.4GHz and 1.86m at 5.8GHz to only 0.38m in the dual band case, corresponding to an improvement by at least a factor of 3.3. In a large outdoor scenario of 4.8 kmÂČ, accuracy improves from 1.88m at 2.4GHz and 5.93m at 5.8GHz to 0.68m with dual band processing, which is a factor of at least 2.8.Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Entwurf eines robusten lokalen Positionierungssystems (LPS), welches in den lizenzfreien Frequenzbereichen fĂŒr industrielle, wissenschaftliche und medizinische Zwecke (industrial, scientific, medical, ISM) bei 2,4GHz und 5,8GHz arbeitet. Die Positionsbestimmung beruht auf dem Prinzip des frequenzmodulierten Dauerstrichradars (frequency modulated continuous wave, FMCW-Radar), welches hochfrequente Rampensignale fĂŒr Laufzeitmessungen und damit Abstandsmessungen benutzt. Im Gegensatz zu aktuellen Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet benutzt das vorgestellte System Daten aus beiden FrequenzbĂ€ndern zur Erhöhung der Genauigkeit und PrĂ€zision sowie Verbesserung der Robustheit. Ein Prototyp des kompletten Systems bestehend aus Basisstationen und mobilen Stationen wurde entworfen. Fast die gesamte analoge hochfrequente Signalverarbeitungskette wurde als anwendungsspezifische integrierte Schaltung realisiert. Verglichen mit Systemen aus Standardkomponenten erlaubt dieser Ansatz die Miniaturisierung der Systemkomponenten und die Einsparung von Leistung. SchlĂŒsselkomponenten wurden mit Konzepten fĂŒr mehrbandige oder breitbandige Schaltungen entworfen. Dabei wurden Sender und EmpfĂ€nger bestehend aus rauscharmem VerstĂ€rker, Mischer und Frequenzsynthesizer mit breitbandiger Frequenzrampenfunktion implementiert. Außerdem wurde ein LeistungsverstĂ€rker fĂŒr die gleichzeitige Nutzung der beiden definierten FrequenzbĂ€nder entworfen. Um Spezifikationen fĂŒr den Schaltungsentwurf zu erhalten, wurden in der Fachliteratur vernachlĂ€ssigte NichtidealitĂ€ten von FMCW-Radarsystemen modelliert. Dazu gehören Signalverzerrungen durch Kompression oder Intermodulation, der Einfluss der automatischen VerstĂ€rkungseinstellung sowie schmalbandige Störer und Nebenschwingungen. Die Ergebnisse der Modellierung wurden benutzt, um eine Spezifikation fĂŒr den Schaltungsentwurf zu erhalten. Die SchĂ€tzung der Position aus gemessenen AbstĂ€nden wurde ĂŒber eine erweiterte Version des Gittersuchalgorithmus erreicht. Dieser nutzt die Abstandsmessdaten aus beiden FrequenzbĂ€ndern. Der Algorithmus ist so entworfen, dass er effizient in einem eingebetteten System implementiert werden kann. Messungen zeigen eine maximale Reichweite des Systems von mindestens 245m. Die Genauigkeit von Abstandsmessungen im Freiland betrĂ€gt 8,2cm. Positionsmessungen wurden unter Verwendung beider EinzelbĂ€nder durchgefĂŒhrt und mit den Ergebnissen des Zweiband-Gittersuchalgorithmus verglichen. Damit konnte eine starke Verbesserung der Positionsgenauigkeit erreicht werden. Die Genauigkeit in einem Innenraum mit einer GrundflĂ€che von 276mÂČ kann verbessert werden von 1,27m bei 2,4GHz und 1,86m bei 5,8GHz zu nur 0,38m im Zweibandverfahren. Das entspricht einer Verbesserung um einen Faktor von mindestens 3,3. In einem grĂ¶ĂŸeren Außenszenario mit einer FlĂ€che von 4,8 kmÂČ verbessert sich die Genauigkeit um einen Faktor von mindestens 2,8 von 1,88m bei 2,4GHz und 5,93m bei 5,8GHz auf 0,68m bei Nutzung von Daten aus beiden FrequenzbĂ€ndern
