An Automatic Level Set Based Liver Segmentation from MRI Data Sets
A fast and accurate liver segmentation method is a challenging work in medical image analysis area. Liver segmentation is an important process for computer-assisted diagnosis, pre-evaluation of liver transplantation and therapy planning of liver tumors. There are several advantages of magnetic resonance imaging such as free form ionizing radiation and good contrast visualization of soft tissue. Also, innovations in recent technology and image acquisition techniques have made magnetic resonance imaging a major tool in modern medicine. However, the use of magnetic resonance images for liver segmentation has been slow when we compare applications with the central nervous systems and musculoskeletal. The reasons are irregular shape, size and position of the liver, contrast agent effects and similarities of the gray values of neighbor organs. Therefore, in this study, we present a fully automatic liver segmentation method by using an approximation of the level set based contour evolution from T2 weighted magnetic resonance data sets. The method avoids solving partial differential equations and applies only integer operations with a two-cycle segmentation algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed approach is achieved by applying the algorithm to all slices with a constant number of iteration and performing the contour evolution without any user defined initial contour. The obtained results are evaluated with four different similarity measures and they show that the automatic segmentation approach gives successful results
Optimización en GPU de algoritmos para la mejora del realce y segmentación en imágenes hepáticas
This doctoral thesis deepens the GPU acceleration for liver enhancement and segmentation. With this motivation, detailed research is carried out here in a compendium of articles. The work developed is structured in three scientific contributions, the first one is based upon enhancement and tumor segmentation, the second one explores the vessel segmentation and the last is published on liver segmentation. These works are implemented on GPU with significant speedups with great scientific impact and relevance in this doctoral thesis The first work proposes cross-modality based contrast enhancement for tumor segmentation on GPU. To do this, it takes target and guidance images as an input and enhance the low quality target image by applying two dimensional histogram approach. Further it has been observed that the enhanced image provides more accurate tumor segmentation using GPU based dynamic seeded region growing. The second contribution is about fast parallel gradient based seeded region growing where static approach has been proposed and implemented on GPU for accurate vessel segmentation. The third contribution describes GPU acceleration of Chan-Vese model and cross-modality based contrast enhancement for liver segmentation
Medical imaging analysis with artificial neural networks
Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging
Automated liver tissues delineation based on machine learning techniques: A survey, current trends and future orientations
There is no denying how machine learning and computer vision have grown in
the recent years. Their highest advantages lie within their automation,
suitability, and ability to generate astounding results in a matter of seconds
in a reproducible manner. This is aided by the ubiquitous advancements reached
in the computing capabilities of current graphical processing units and the
highly efficient implementation of such techniques. Hence, in this paper, we
survey the key studies that are published between 2014 and 2020, showcasing the
different machine learning algorithms researchers have used to segment the
liver, hepatic-tumors, and hepatic-vasculature structures. We divide the
surveyed studies based on the tissue of interest (hepatic-parenchyma,
hepatic-tumors, or hepatic-vessels), highlighting the studies that tackle more
than one task simultaneously. Additionally, the machine learning algorithms are
classified as either supervised or unsupervised, and further partitioned if the
amount of works that fall under a certain scheme is significant. Moreover,
different datasets and challenges found in literature and websites, containing
masks of the aforementioned tissues, are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the
organizers original contributions, and those of other researchers. Also, the
metrics that are used excessively in literature are mentioned in our review
stressing their relevancy to the task at hand. Finally, critical challenges and
future directions are emphasized for innovative researchers to tackle, exposing
gaps that need addressing such as the scarcity of many studies on the vessels
segmentation challenge, and why their absence needs to be dealt with in an
accelerated manner.Comment: 41 pages, 4 figures, 13 equations, 1 table. A review paper on liver

Deep learning for image-based liver analysis — A comprehensive review focusing on malignant lesions
Deep learning-based methods, in particular, convolutional neural networks and fully convolutional networks are now widely used in the medical image analysis domain. The scope of this review focuses on the analysis using deep learning of focal liver lesions, with a special interest in hepatocellular carcinoma and metastatic cancer; and structures like the parenchyma or the vascular system. Here, we address several neural network architectures used for analyzing the anatomical structures and lesions in the liver from various imaging modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. Image analysis tasks like segmentation, object detection and classification for the liver, liver vessels and liver lesions are discussed. Based on the qualitative search, 91 papers were filtered out for the survey, including journal publications and conference proceedings. The papers reviewed in this work are grouped into eight categories based on the methodologies used. By comparing the evaluation metrics, hybrid models performed better for both the liver and the lesion segmentation tasks, ensemble classifiers performed better for the vessel segmentation tasks and combined approach performed better for both the lesion classification and detection tasks. The performance was measured based on the Dice score for the segmentation, and accuracy for the classification and detection tasks, which are the most commonly used metrics.publishedVersio
Liver segmentation using marker controlled watershed transform
The largest organ in the body is the liver and primarily helps in metabolism and detoxification. Liver segmentation is a crucial step in liver cancer detection in computer vision-based biomedical image analysis. Liver segmentation is a critical task and results in under-segmentation and over-segmentation due to the complex structure of abdominal computed tomography (CT) images, noise, and textural variations over the image. This paper presents liver segmentation in abdominal CT images using marker-based watershed transforms. In the pre-processing stage, a modified double stage gaussian filter (MDSGF) is used to enhance the contrast, and preserve the edge and texture information of liver CT images. Further, marker controlled watershed transform is utilized for the segmentation of liver images from the abdominal CT images. Liver segmentation using suggested MDSGF and marker-based watershed transform help to diminish the under-segmentation and over-segmentation of the liver object. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated on the LiTS dataset based on Dice score (DS), relative volume difference (RVD), volumetric overlapping error (VOE), and Jaccard index (JI). The proposed method gives (Dice score of 0.959, RVD of 0.09, VOE of 0.089, and JI of 0.921)
