AstroGrid-D: Enhancing Astronomic Science with Grid Technology
We present AstroGrid-D, a project bringing together astronomers and experts in Grid technology to enhance astronomic science in many aspects. First, by sharing currently dispersed resources, scientists can calculate their models in more detail. Second, by developing new mechanisms to efficiently access and process existing datasets, scientific problems can be investigated that were until now impossible to solve. Third, by adopting Grid technology large instruments such as robotic telescopes and complex scientific workflows from data aquisition to analysis can be managed in an integrated manner. In this paper, we present prominent astronomic use cases, discuss requirements on a Grid middleware and present our approach to extend/augment existing middleware to facilitate the improvements mentioned above
CERN openlab Whitepaper on Future IT Challenges in Scientific Research
This whitepaper describes the major IT challenges in scientific research at CERN and several other European and international research laboratories and projects. Each challenge is exemplified through a set of concrete use cases drawn from the requirements of large-scale scientific programs. The paper is based on contributions from many researchers and IT experts of the participating laboratories and also input from the existing CERN openlab industrial sponsors. The views expressed in this document are those of the individual contributors and do not necessarily reflect the view of their organisations and/or affiliates
The Design and Operation of The Keck Observatory Archive
The Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) and the W. M. Keck
Observatory (WMKO) operate an archive for the Keck Observatory. At the end of
2013, KOA completed the ingestion of data from all eight active observatory
instruments. KOA will continue to ingest all newly obtained observations, at an
anticipated volume of 4 TB per year. The data are transmitted electronically
from WMKO to IPAC for storage and curation. Access to data is governed by a
data use policy, and approximately two-thirds of the data in the archive are
public.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figs, 4 tables. Presented at Software and

advligorts: The Advanced LIGO Real-Time Digital Control and Data Acquisition System
The Advanced LIGO detectors are sophisticated opto-mechanical devices. At the
core of their operation is feedback control. The Advanced LIGO project
developed a custom digital control and data acquisition system to handle the
unique needs of this new breed of astronomical detector. The advligorts is the
software component of this system. This highly modular and extensible system
has enabled the unprecedented performance of the LIGO instruments, and has been
a vital component in the direct detection of gravitational waves
Grids and the Virtual Observatory
We consider several projects from astronomy that benefit from the Grid paradigm and
associated technology, many of which involve either massive datasets or the federation
of multiple datasets. We cover image computation (mosaicking, multi-wavelength
images, and synoptic surveys); database computation (representation through XML,
data mining, and visualization); and semantic interoperability (publishing, ontologies,
directories, and service descriptions)
Cherenkov Telescope Array Data Management
Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)
is evolving towards the model of a public observatory. Handling, processing and
archiving the large amount of data generated by the CTA instruments and
delivering scientific products are some of the challenges in designing the CTA
Data Management. The participation of scientists from within CTA Consortium and
from the greater worldwide scientific community necessitates a sophisticated
scientific analysis system capable of providing unified and efficient user
access to data, software and computing resources. Data Management is designed
to respond to three main issues: (i) the treatment and flow of data from remote
telescopes; (ii) "big-data" archiving and processing; (iii) and open data
access. In this communication the overall technical design of the CTA Data
Management, current major developments and prototypes are presented.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic
Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands. All CTA contributions
