    A Cooperation-Driven ICN-based Caching Scheme for Mobile Content chunk Delivery at RAN

    In order to resolve the tension between continuously growing mobile users’ demands on content access and the scarcity of the bandwidth capacity over backhaul links, we propose in this paper a fully distributed ICN-based caching scheme for content objects in Radio Access Network (RAN) at eNodeBs. Such caching scheme operates in a cooperative way within neighbourhoods, aiming to reduce cache redundancy so as to improve the diversity of content distribution. The caching decision logic at individual eNodeBs allows for adaptive caching, by taking into account dynamic context information, such as content popularity and availability. The efficiency of the proposed distributed caching scheme is evaluated via extensive simulations, which show great performance gains, in terms of a substantial reduction of backhaul content traffic as well as great improvement on the diversity of content distribution, etc

    Caching Techniques in Next Generation Cellular Networks

    Content caching will be an essential feature in the next generations of cellular networks. Indeed, a network equipped with caching capabilities allows users to retrieve content with reduced access delays and consequently reduces the traffic passing through the network backhaul. However, the deployment of the caching nodes in the network is hindered by the following two challenges. First, the storage space of a cache is limited as well as expensive. So, it is not possible to store in the cache every content that can be possibly requested by the user. This calls for efficient techniques to determine the contents that must be stored in the cache. Second, efficient ways are needed to implement and control the caching node. In this thesis, we investigate caching techniques focussing to address the above-mentioned challenges, so that the overall system performance is increased. In order to tackle the challenge of the limited storage capacity, smart proactive caching strategies are needed. In the context of vehicular users served by edge nodes, we believe a caching strategy should be adapted to the mobility characteristics of the cars. In this regard, we propose a scheme called RICH (RoadsIde CacHe), which optimally caches content at the edge nodes where connected vehicles require it most. In particular, our scheme is designed to ensure in-order delivery of content chunks to end users. Unlike blind popularity decisions, the probabilistic caching used by RICH considers vehicular trajectory predictions as well as content service time by edge nodes. We evaluate our approach on realistic mobility datasets against a popularity-based edge approach called POP, and a mobility-aware caching strategy known as netPredict. In terms of content availability, our RICH edge caching scheme provides an enhancement of up to 33% and 190% when compared with netPredict and POP respectively. At the same time, the backhaul penalty bandwidth is reduced by a factor ranging between 57% and 70%. Caching node is an also a key component in Named Data Networking (NDN) that is an innovative paradigm to provide content based services in future networks. As compared to legacy networks, naming of network packets and in-network caching of content make NDN more feasible for content dissemination. However, the implementation of NDN requires drastic changes to the existing network infrastructure. One feasible approach is to use Software Defined Networking (SDN), according to which the control of the network is delegated to a centralized controller, which configures the forwarding data plane. This approach leads to large signaling overhead as well as large end-to-end (e2e) delays. In order to overcome these issues, in this work, we provide an efficient way to implement and control the NDN node. We propose to enable NDN using a stateful data plane in the SDN network. In particular, we realize the functionality of an NDN node using a stateful SDN switch attached with a local cache for content storage, and use OpenState to implement such an approach. In our solution, no involvement of the controller is required once the OpenState switch has been configured. We benchmark the performance of our solution against the traditional SDN approach considering several relevant metrics. Experimental results highlight the benefits of a stateful approach and of our implementation, which avoids signaling overhead and significantly reduces e2e delays

    A Survey of Deep Learning for Data Caching in Edge Network

    The concept of edge caching provision in emerging 5G and beyond mobile networks is a promising method to deal both with the traffic congestion problem in the core network as well as reducing latency to access popular content. In that respect end user demand for popular content can be satisfied by proactively caching it at the network edge, i.e, at close proximity to the users. In addition to model based caching schemes learning-based edge caching optimizations has recently attracted significant attention and the aim hereafter is to capture these recent advances for both model based and data driven techniques in the area of proactive caching. This paper summarizes the utilization of deep learning for data caching in edge network. We first outline the typical research topics in content caching and formulate a taxonomy based on network hierarchical structure. Then, a number of key types of deep learning algorithms are presented, ranging from supervised learning to unsupervised learning as well as reinforcement learning. Furthermore, a comparison of state-of-the-art literature is provided from the aspects of caching topics and deep learning methods.     Content, Topology and Cooperation in In-network Caching

    In-network caching aims at improving content delivery and alleviating pressures on network bandwidth by leveraging universally networked caches. This thesis studies the design of cooperative in-network caching strategy from three perspectives: content, topology and cooperation, specifically focuses on the mechanisms of content delivery and cooperation policy and their impacts on the performance of cache networks. The main contributions of this thesis are twofold. From measurement perspective, we show that the conventional metric hit rate is not sufficient in evaluating a caching strategy on non-trivial topologies, therefore we introduce footprint reduction and coupling factor, which contain richer information. We show cooperation policy is the key in balancing various tradeoffs in caching strategy design, and further investigate the performance impact from content per se via different chunking schemes. From design perspective, we first show different caching heuristics and smart routing schemes can significantly improve the caching performance and facilitate content delivery. We then incorporate well-defined fairness metric into design and derive the unique optimal caching solution on the Pareto boundary with bargaining game framework. In addition, our study on the functional relationship between cooperation overhead and neighborhood size indicates collaboration should be constrained in a small neighborhood due to its cost growing exponentially on general network topologies.Verkonsisäinen välimuistitallennus pyrkii parantamaan sisällöntoimitusta ja helpottamaan painetta verkon siirtonopeudessa hyödyntämällä universaaleja verkottuneita välimuisteja. Tämä väitöskirja tutkii yhteistoiminnallisen verkonsisäisen välimuistitallennuksen suunnittelua kolmesta näkökulmasta: sisällön, topologian ja yhteistyön kautta, erityisesti keskittyen sisällöntoimituksen mekanismeihin ja yhteistyökäytäntöihin sekä näiden vaikutuksiin välimuistiverkkojen performanssiin. Väitöskirjan suurimmat aikaansaannokset ovat kahdella saralla. Mittaamisen näkökulmasta näytämme, että perinteinen metrinen välimuistin osumatarkkuus ei ole riittävä ei-triviaalin välimuistitallennusstrategian arvioinnissa, joten esittelemme parempaa informaatiota sisältävät jalanjäljen pienentämisen sekä yhdistämistekijän. Näytämme, että yhteistyökäytäntö on avain erilaisten välimuistitallennusstrategian suunnitteluun liittyvien kompromissien tasapainotukseen ja tutkimme lisää sisällön erilaisten lohkomisjärjestelmien kautta aiheuttamaa vaikutusta performanssiin. Suunnittelun näkökulmasta näytämme ensin, kuinka erilaiset välimuistitallennuksen heuristiikat ja viisaan reitityksen järjestelmät parantavat merkittävästi välimuistitallennusperformanssia sekä helpottavat sisällön toimitusta. Sisällytämme sitten suunnitteluun hyvin määritellyn oikeudenmukaisuusmittarin ja johdamme uniikin optimaalin välimuistitallennusratkaisun Pareto-rintamalla neuvottelupelin kehyksissä. Lisäksi tutkimuksemme yhteistyökustannusten ja naapurustokoon funktionaalisesta suhteesta viittaa siihen, että yhteistyö on syytä rajoittaa pieneen naapurustoon sen kustannusten kasvaessa eksponentiaalisesti yleisessä verkkotopologiassa

    Binary Task Offloading Model For Mobile Edge Computing using NDN Architecture

    Driven by the advantages of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Information-Centric Networking (ICN) in nextgeneration networks we propose an architecture for MEC using Named Data Networking (NDN). NDN is one of the prominent architectures of ICN having features like unique-naming, in-network caching, inherit support for multicasting, and support for mobility. Placing MEC in NDN provides the additional facilities of edge computing like pushing of resource-hungry and time-critical applications of the mobile devices to the edge-computing server. Therefore, one of the research challenges is the decision regarding the task offloading process by the end-users to the edge-computing server.     Named Data Networking in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks: State-of-the-Art and Challenges

    International audienceInformation-Centric Networking (ICN) has been proposed as one of the future Internet architectures. It is poised to address the challenges faced by today's Internet that include, but not limited to, scalability, addressing, security, and privacy. Furthermore, it also aims at meeting the requirements for new emerging Internet applications. To realize ICN, Named Data Networking (NDN) is one of the recent implementations of ICN that provides a suitable communication approach due to its clean slate design and simple communication model. There are a plethora of applications realized through ICN in different domains where data is the focal point of communication. One such domain is Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) realized through Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) where vehicles exchange information and content with each other and with the infrastructure. To date, excellent research results have been yielded in the VANET domain aiming at safe, reliable, and infotainment-rich driving experience. However, due to the dynamic topologies, host-centric model, and ephemeral nature of vehicular communication, various challenges are faced by VANET that hinder the realization of successful vehicular networks and adversely affect the data dissemination, content delivery, and user experiences. To fill these gaps, NDN has been extensively used as underlying communication paradigm for VANET. Inspired by the extensive research results in NDN-based VANET, in this paper, we provide a detailed and systematic review of NDN-driven VANET. More precisely, we investigate the role of NDN in VANET and discuss the feasibility of NDN architecture in VANET environment. Subsequently, we cover in detail, NDN-based naming, routing and forwarding, caching, mobility, and security mechanism for VANET. Furthermore, we discuss the existing standards, solutions, and simulation tools used in NDN-based VANET. Finally, we also identify open challenges and issues faced by NDN-driven VANET and highlight future research directions that should be addressed by the research community

    Cache "less for more" in information-centric networks (extended version)

    Ubiquitous in-network caching is one of the key aspects of information-centric networking (ICN) which has received widespread research interest in recent years. In one of the key relevant proposals known as Content-Centric Networking (CCN), the premise is that leveraging in-network caching to store content in every node along the delivery path can enhance content delivery. We question such an indiscriminate universal caching strategy and investigate whether caching less can actually achieve more. More specifically, we study the problem of en route caching and investigate if caching in only a subset of nodes along the delivery path can achieve better performance in terms of cache and server hit rates. We first study the behavior of CCN's ubiquitous caching and observe that even naïve random caching at a single intermediate node along the delivery path can achieve similar and, under certain conditions, even better caching gain. Motivated by this, we propose a centrality-based caching algorithm by exploiting the concept of (ego network) betweenness centrality to improve the caching gain and eliminate the uncertainty in the performance of the simplistic random caching strategy. Our results suggest that our solution can consistently achieve better gain across both synthetic and real network topologies that have different structural properties. We further find that the effectiveness of our solution is correlated to the precise structure of the network topology whereby the scheme is effective in topologies that exhibit power law betweenness distribution (as in Internet AS and WWW networks)

    Mobility Management in New Internet Architectures

    The software integration with new network architectures via Software-Defined Networking (SDN) axis appears to be a major evolution of networks. While this paradigm was primarily developed for easy network setup, its ability to integrate services has also to be considered. Thus, the mobility service for which solutions have been proposed in conventional architectures by defining standardized protocols should be rethought in terms of SDN service. Mobile devices might use or move in SDN network. In this thesis, we proposed a new mobility management approach which called "SDN-Mobility" and has shown that SDN can be implemented without IP mobility protocol for providing mobility like as Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) that is the solution adopted by 3GPP, with some performance gain. However, PMIPv6 and SDN-Mobility have some packets loss during Mobile Node (MN) handover. Thus, in this thesis, we proposed a new paradigm based on caching function to improve the quality of transfer during handover. Caching policy cooperates with SDN controller for automatic buffering of the data during the handover. We proposed two caching policies that are compared through a performance analysis regarding the quality of transfer for the user and for the operator. This thesis also presented that SDN-Mobility with caching policy can be applied easily for mobility management in heterogeneous network architectures able to integrate the future Internet based on the Information-Centric Networking (ICN)
