    Diffusion Curves: A Vector Representation for Smooth-Shaded Images

    International audienceWe describe a new vector-based primitive for creating smooth-shaded images, called the diffusion curve. A diffusion curve partitions the space through which it is drawn, defining different colors on either side. These colors may vary smoothly along the curve. In addition, the sharpness of the color transition from one side of the curve to the other can be controlled. Given a set of diffusion curves, the final image is constructed by solving a Poisson equation whose constraints are specified by the set of gradients across all diffusion curves. Like all vector-based primitives, diffusion curves conveniently support a variety of operations, including geometry-based editing, keyframe animation, and ready stylization. Moreover, their representation is compact and inherently resolution-independent. We describe a GPU-based implementation for rendering images defined by a set of diffusion curves in realtime. We then demonstrate an interactive drawing system for allowing artists to create artworks using diffusion curves, either by drawing the curves in a freehand style, or by tracing existing imagery. The system is simple and intuitive: we show results created by artists after just a few minutes of instruction. Furthermore, we describe a completely automatic conversion process for taking an image and turning it into a set of diffusion curves that closely approximate the original image content

    3D photogrammetric data modeling and optimization for multipurpose analysis and representation of Cultural Heritage assets

    This research deals with the issues concerning the processing, managing, representation for further dissemination of the big amount of 3D data today achievable and storable with the modern geomatic techniques of 3D metric survey. In particular, this thesis is focused on the optimization process applied to 3D photogrammetric data of Cultural Heritage assets. Modern Geomatic techniques enable the acquisition and storage of a big amount of data, with high metric and radiometric accuracy and precision, also in the very close range field, and to process very detailed 3D textured models. Nowadays, the photogrammetric pipeline has well-established potentialities and it is considered one of the principal technique to produce, at low cost, detailed 3D textured models. The potentialities offered by high resolution and textured 3D models is today well-known and such representations are a powerful tool for many multidisciplinary purposes, at different scales and resolutions, from documentation, conservation and restoration to visualization and education. For example, their sub-millimetric precision makes them suitable for scientific studies applied to the geometry and materials (i.e. for structural and static tests, for planning restoration activities or for historical sources); their high fidelity to the real object and their navigability makes them optimal for web-based visualization and dissemination applications. Thanks to the improvement made in new visualization standard, they can be easily used as visualization interface linking different kinds of information in a highly intuitive way. Furthermore, many museums look today for more interactive exhibitions that may increase the visitors’ emotions and many recent applications make use of 3D contents (i.e. in virtual or augmented reality applications and through virtual museums). What all of these applications have to deal with concerns the issue deriving from the difficult of managing the big amount of data that have to be represented and navigated. Indeed, reality based models have very heavy file sizes (also tens of GB) that makes them difficult to be handled by common and portable devices, published on the internet or managed in real time applications. Even though recent advances produce more and more sophisticated and capable hardware and internet standards, empowering the ability to easily handle, visualize and share such contents, other researches aim at define a common pipeline for the generation and optimization of 3D models with a reduced number of polygons, however able to satisfy detailed radiometric and geometric requests. iii This thesis is inserted in this scenario and focuses on the 3D modeling process of photogrammetric data aimed at their easy sharing and visualization. In particular, this research tested a 3D models optimization, a process which aims at the generation of Low Polygons models, with very low byte file size, processed starting from the data of High Poly ones, that nevertheless offer a level of detail comparable to the original models. To do this, several tools borrowed from the game industry and game engine have been used. For this test, three case studies have been chosen, a modern sculpture of a contemporary Italian artist, a roman marble statue, preserved in the Civic Archaeological Museum of Torino, and the frieze of the Augustus arch preserved in the city of Susa (Piedmont- Italy). All the test cases have been surveyed by means of a close range photogrammetric acquisition and three high detailed 3D models have been generated by means of a Structure from Motion and image matching pipeline. On the final High Poly models generated, different optimization and decimation tools have been tested with the final aim to evaluate the quality of the information that can be extracted by the final optimized models, in comparison to those of the original High Polygon one. This study showed how tools borrowed from the Computer Graphic offer great potentialities also in the Cultural Heritage field. This application, in fact, may meet the needs of multipurpose and multiscale studies, using different levels of optimization, and this procedure could be applied to different kind of objects, with a variety of different sizes and shapes, also on multiscale and multisensor data, such as buildings, architectural complexes, data from UAV surveys and so on

    Methods for Real-time Visualization and Interaction with Landforms

    This thesis presents methods to enrich data modeling and analysis in the geoscience domain with a particular focus on geomorphological applications. First, a short overview of the relevant characteristics of the used remote sensing data and basics of its processing and visualization are provided. Then, two new methods for the visualization of vector-based maps on digital elevation models (DEMs) are presented. The first method uses a texture-based approach that generates a texture from the input maps at runtime taking into account the current viewpoint. In contrast to that, the second method utilizes the stencil buffer to create a mask in image space that is then used to render the map on top of the DEM. A particular challenge in this context is posed by the view-dependent level-of-detail representation of the terrain geometry. After suitable visualization methods for vector-based maps have been investigated, two landform mapping tools for the interactive generation of such maps are presented. The user can carry out the mapping directly on the textured digital elevation model and thus benefit from the 3D visualization of the relief. Additionally, semi-automatic image segmentation techniques are applied in order to reduce the amount of user interaction required and thus make the mapping process more efficient and convenient. The challenge in the adaption of the methods lies in the transfer of the algorithms to the quadtree representation of the data and in the application of out-of-core and hierarchical methods to ensure interactive performance. Although high-resolution remote sensing data are often available today, their effective resolution at steep slopes is rather low due to the oblique acquisition angle. For this reason, remote sensing data are suitable to only a limited extent for visualization as well as landform mapping purposes. To provide an easy way to supply additional imagery, an algorithm for registering uncalibrated photos to a textured digital elevation model is presented. A particular challenge in registering the images is posed by large variations in the photos concerning resolution, lighting conditions, seasonal changes, etc. The registered photos can be used to increase the visual quality of the textured DEM, in particular at steep slopes. To this end, a method is presented that combines several georegistered photos to textures for the DEM. The difficulty in this compositing process is to create a consistent appearance and avoid visible seams between the photos. In addition to that, the photos also provide valuable means to improve landform mapping. To this end, an extension of the landform mapping methods is presented that allows the utilization of the registered photos during mapping. This way, a detailed and exact mapping becomes feasible even at steep slopes

    Fast Volume Rendering and Deformation Algorithms

    Volume rendering is a technique for simultaneous visualization of surfaces and inner structures of objects. However, the huge number of volume primitives (voxels) in a volume, leads to high computational cost. In this dissertation I developed two algorithms for the acceleration of volume rendering and volume deformation. The first algorithm accelerates the ray casting of volume. Previous ray casting acceleration techniques like space-leaping and early-ray-termination are only efficient when most voxels in a volume are either opaque or transparent. When many voxels are semi-transparent, the rendering time will increase considerably. Our new algorithm improves the performance of ray casting of semi-transparently mapped volumes by exploiting the opacity coherency in object space, leading to a speedup factor between 1.90 and 3.49 in rendering semi-transparent volumes. The acceleration is realized with the help of pre-computed coherency distances. We developed an efficient algorithm to encode the coherency information, which requires less than 12 seconds for data sets with about 8 million voxels. The second algorithm is for volume deformation. Unlike the traditional methods, our method incorporates the two stages of volume deformation, i.e. deformation and rendering, into a unified process. Instead to deform each voxel to generate an intermediate deformed volume, the algorithm follows inversely deformed rays to generate the desired deformation. The calculations and memory for generating the intermediate volume are thus saved. The deformation continuity is achieved by adaptive ray division which matches the amplitude of local deformation. We proposed approaches for shading and opacit adjustment which guarantee the visual plausibility of deformation results. We achieve an additional deformation speedup factor of 2.34~6.58 by incorporating early-ray-termination, space-leaping and the coherency acceleration technique in the new deformation algorithm

    Study on the Method of Constructing a Statistical Shape Model and Its Application to the Segmentation of Internal Organs in Medical Images

    In image processing, segmentation is one of the critical tasks for diagnostic analysis and image interpretation. In the following thesis, we describe the investigation of three problems related to the segmentation algorithms for medical images: Active shape model algorithm, 3-dimensional (3-D) statistical shape model building and organic segmentation experiments. For the development of Active shape models, the constraints of statistical model reduced this algorithm to be difficult for various biological shapes. To overcome the coupling of parameters in the original algorithm, in this thesis, the genetic algorithm is introduced to relax the shape limitation. How to construct a robust and effective 3-D point model is still a key step in statistical shape models. Generally the shape information is obtained from manually segmented voxel data. In this thesis, a two-step procedure for generating these models was designed. After transformed the voxel data to triangular polygonal data, in the first step, attitudes of these interesting objects are aligned according their surface features. We propose to reflect the surface orientations by means of their Gauss maps. As well the Gauss maps are mapped to a complex plane using stereographic projection approach. The experiment was run to align a set of left lung models. The second step is identifying the positions of landmarks on polygonal surfaces. This is solved by surface parameterization method. We proposed two simplex methods to correspond the landmarks. A semi-automatic method attempts to “copy” the phasic positions of pre-placed landmarks to all the surfaces, which have been mapped to the same parameterization domain. Another automatic corresponding method attempts to place the landmarks equidistantly. Finally, the goodness experiments were performed to measure the difference to manually corresponded results. And we also compared the affection to correspondence when using different surface mapping methods. The third part of this thesis is applying the segmentation algorithms to solve clinical problems. We did not stick to the model-based methods but choose the suitable one or their complex according to the objects. In the experiment of lung regions segmentation which includes pulmonary nodules, we propose a complementary region growing method to deal with the unpredictable variation of image densities of lesion regions. In the experiments of liver regions, instead of using region growing method in 3-D style, we turn into a slice-by-slice style in order to reduce the overflows. The image intensity of cardiac regions is distinguishable from lung regions in CT image. But as to the adjacent zone of heart and liver boundary are generally blurry. We utilized a shape model guided method to refine the segmentation results.3-D segmentation techniques have been applied widely not only in medical imaging fields, but also in machine vision, computer graphic.     Visualisation of multi-dimensional medical images with application to brain electrical impedance tomography

    Medical imaging plays an important role in modem medicine. With the increasing complexity and information presented by medical images, visualisation is vital for medical research and clinical applications to interpret the information presented in these images. The aim of this research is to investigate improvements to medical image visualisation, particularly for multi-dimensional medical image datasets. A recently developed medical imaging technique known as Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is presented as a demonstration. To fulfil the aim, three main efforts are included in this work. First, a novel scheme for the processmg of brain EIT data with SPM (Statistical Parametric Mapping) to detect ROI (Regions of Interest) in the data is proposed based on a theoretical analysis. To evaluate the feasibility of this scheme, two types of experiments are carried out: one is implemented with simulated EIT data, and the other is performed with human brain EIT data under visual stimulation. The experimental results demonstrate that: SPM is able to localise the expected ROI in EIT data correctly; and it is reasonable to use the balloon hemodynamic change model to simulate the impedance change during brain function activity. Secondly, to deal with the absence of human morphology information in EIT visualisation, an innovative landmark-based registration scheme is developed to register brain EIT image with a standard anatomical brain atlas. Finally, a new task typology model is derived for task exploration in medical image visualisation, and a task-based system development methodology is proposed for the visualisation of multi-dimensional medical images. As a case study, a prototype visualisation system, named EIT5DVis, has been developed, following this methodology. to visualise five-dimensional brain EIT data. The EIT5DVis system is able to accept visualisation tasks through a graphical user interface; apply appropriate methods to analyse tasks, which include the ROI detection approach and registration scheme mentioned in the preceding paragraphs; and produce various visualisations

    High-Level Facade Image Interpretation using Marked Point Processes

    In this thesis, we address facade image interpretation as one essential ingredient for the generation of high-detailed, semantic meaningful, three-dimensional city-models. Given a single rectified facade image, we detect relevant facade objects such as windows, entrances, and balconies, which yield a description of the image in terms of accurate position and size of these objects. Urban digital three-dimensional reconstruction and documentation is an active area of research with several potential applications, e.g., in the area of digital mapping for navigation, urban planning, emergency management, disaster control or the entertainment industry. A detailed building model which is not just a geometric object enriched with texture, allows for semantic requests as the number of floors or the location of balconies and entrances. Facade image interpretation is one essential step in order to yield such models. In this thesis, we propose the interpretation of facade images by combining evidence for the occurrence of individual object classes which we derive from data, and prior knowledge which guides the image interpretation in its entirety. We present a three-step procedure which generates features that are suited to describe relevant objects, learns a representation that is suited for object detection, and that enables the image interpretation using the results of object detection while incorporating prior knowledge about typical configurations of facade objects, which we learn from training data. According to these three sub-tasks, our major achievements are: We propose a novel method for facade image interpretation based on a marked point process. Therefor, we develop a model for the description of typical configurations of facade objects and propose an image interpretation system which combines evidence derived from data and prior knowledge about typical configurations of facade objects. In order to generate evidence from data, we propose a feature type which we call shapelets. They are scale invariant and provide large distinctiveness for facade objects. Segments of lines, arcs, and ellipses serve as basic features for the generation of shapelets. Therefor, we propose a novel line simplification approach which approximates given pixel-chains by a sequence of lines, circular, and elliptical arcs. Among others, it is based on an adaption to Douglas-Peucker's algorithm, which is based on circles as basic geometric elements We evaluate each step separately. We show the effects of polyline segmentation and simplification on several images with comparable good or even better results, referring to a state-of-the-art algorithm, which proves their large distinctiveness for facade objects. Using shapelets we provide a reasonable classification performance on a challenging dataset, including intra-class variations, clutter, and scale changes. Finally, we show promising results for the facade interpretation system on several datasets and provide a qualitative evaluation which demonstrates the capability of complete and accurate detection of facade objectsHigh-Level Interpretation von Fassaden-Bildern unter Benutzung von Markierten PunktprozessenDas Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Interpretation von Fassadenbildern als wesentlicher Beitrag zur Erstellung hoch detaillierter, semantisch reichhaltiger dreidimensionaler Stadtmodelle. In rektifizierten Einzelaufnahmen von Fassaden detektieren wir relevante Objekte wie Fenster, Türen und Balkone, um daraus eine Bildinterpretation in Form von präzisen Positionen und Größen dieser Objekte abzuleiten. Die digitale dreidimensionale Rekonstruktion urbaner Regionen ist ein aktives Forschungsfeld mit zahlreichen Anwendungen, beispielsweise der Herstellung digitaler Kartenwerke für Navigation, Stadtplanung, Notfallmanagement, Katastrophenschutz oder die Unterhaltungsindustrie. Detaillierte Gebäudemodelle, die nicht nur als geometrische Objekte repräsentiert und durch eine geeignete Textur visuell ansprechend dargestellt werden, erlauben semantische Anfragen, wie beispielsweise nach der Anzahl der Geschosse oder der Position der Balkone oder Eingänge. Die semantische Interpretation von Fassadenbildern ist ein wesentlicher Schritt für die Erzeugung solcher Modelle. In der vorliegenden Arbeit lösen wir diese Aufgabe, indem wir aus Daten abgeleitete Evidenz für das Vorkommen einzelner Objekte mit Vorwissen kombinieren, das die Analyse der gesamten Bildinterpretation steuert. Wir präsentieren dafür ein dreistufiges Verfahren: Wir erzeugen Bildmerkmale, die für die Beschreibung der relevanten Objekte geeignet sind. Wir lernen, auf Basis abgeleiteter Merkmale, eine Repräsentation dieser Objekte. Schließlich realisieren wir die Bildinterpretation basierend auf der zuvor gelernten Repräsentation und dem Vorwissen über typische Konfigurationen von Fassadenobjekten, welches wir aus Trainingsdaten ableiten. Wir leisten dazu die folgenden wissenschaftlichen Beiträge: Wir schlagen eine neuartige Me-thode zur Interpretation von Fassadenbildern vor, die einen sogenannten markierten Punktprozess verwendet. Dafür entwickeln wir ein Modell zur Beschreibung typischer Konfigurationen von Fassadenobjekten und entwickeln ein Bildinterpretationssystem, welches aus Daten abgeleitete Evidenz und a priori Wissen über typische Fassadenkonfigurationen kombiniert. Für die Erzeugung der Evidenz stellen wir Merkmale vor, die wir Shapelets nennen und die skaleninvariant und durch eine ausgesprochene Distinktivität im Bezug auf Fassadenobjekte gekennzeichnet sind. Als Basismerkmale für die Erzeugung der Shapelets dienen Linien-, Kreis- und Ellipsensegmente. Dafür stellen wir eine neuartige Methode zur Vereinfachung von Liniensegmenten vor, die eine Pixelkette durch eine Sequenz von geraden Linienstücken und elliptischen Bogensegmenten approximiert. Diese basiert unter anderem auf einer Adaption des Douglas-Peucker Algorithmus, die anstelle gerader Linienstücke, Bogensegmente als geometrische Basiselemente verwendet. Wir evaluieren jeden dieser drei Teilschritte separat. Wir zeigen Ergebnisse der Liniensegmen-tierung anhand verschiedener Bilder und weisen dabei vergleichbare und teilweise verbesserte Ergebnisse im Vergleich zu bestehende Verfahren nach. Für die vorgeschlagenen Shapelets weisen wir in der Evaluation ihre diskriminativen Eigenschaften im Bezug auf Fassadenobjekte nach. Wir erzeugen auf einem anspruchsvollen Datensatz von skalenvariablen Fassadenobjekten, mit starker Variabilität der Erscheinung innerhalb der Klassen, vielversprechende Klassifikationsergebnisse, die die Verwendbarkeit der gelernten Shapelets für die weitere Interpretation belegen. Schließlich zeigen wir Ergebnisse der Interpretation der Fassadenstruktur anhand verschiedener Datensätze. Die qualitative Evaluation demonstriert die Fähigkeit des vorgeschlagenen Lösungsansatzes zur vollständigen und präzisen Detektion der genannten Fassadenobjekte

    An automatic method of above-water iceberg 3-D profiling based on autonomous surface craft (ASC) using surface images and LIDAR

    This thesis reports on a novel method to build a 3-D model of the above-water portion of icebergs using surface imaging. The goal is to work towards the automation of iceberg surveys, allowing an Autonomous Surface Craft (ASC) to acquire shape and size information. After collecting data and images, the core software algorithm is made up of three parts: occluding contour finding, volume intersection, and parameter estimation. A software module is designed that could be used on the ASC to perform automatic and fast processing of above-water surface image data to determine iceberg shape and size measurement and determination. The resolution of the method is calculated using data from the iceberg database of the Program of Energy Research and Development (PERD). The method was investigated using data from field trials conducted through the summer of 2014 by surveying 8 icebergs during 3 expeditions. The results were analyzed to determine iceberg characteristics. Limitations of this method are addressed including its accuracy. Surface imaging system and LIDAR system are developed to profile the above-water iceberg in 2015
