On the performance of a cavity method based algorithm for the Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree Problem on graphs
We study the behavior of an algorithm derived from the cavity method for the
Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree (PCST) problem on graphs. The algorithm is based
on the zero temperature limit of the cavity equations and as such is formally
simple (a fixed point equation resolved by iteration) and distributed
(parallelizable). We provide a detailed comparison with state-of-the-art
algorithms on a wide range of existing benchmarks networks and random graphs.
Specifically, we consider an enhanced derivative of the Goemans-Williamson
heuristics and the DHEA solver, a Branch and Cut Linear/Integer Programming
based approach. The comparison shows that the cavity algorithm outperforms the
two algorithms in most large instances both in running time and quality of the
solution. Finally we prove a few optimality properties of the solutions
provided by our algorithm, including optimality under the two post-processing
procedures defined in the Goemans-Williamson derivative and global optimality
in some limit cases
Computing Near-Optimal Solutions to the Steiner Problem in a Graph Using a Genetic Algorithm
A new Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the Steiner Problem in a Graph (SPG) is presented. The algorithm is based on a bitstring encoding. A bitstring specifies selected Steiner vertices and the corresponding Steiner tree is computed using the Distance Network Heuristic. This scheme ensures that every bitstring correspond to a valid Steiner tree and thus eliminates the need for penalty terms in the cost function. The GA is tested on all SPG instances from the OR-Library of which the largest graphs have 2,500 vertices and 62,500 edges. When executed 10 times on each of 58 graph examples, the GA finds the global optimum at least once for 55 graphs and every time for 43 graphs. In total the GA finds the global optimum in 77 % of all program executions and is within 1 % from the global optimum in more than 92 % of all executions. The performance is compared to that of two branch-and-cut algorithms and one of the very best deterministic heuristics, an iterated version of the Shortest Path Heuristic (SPH-I). For all test examples but one, even the worst result ever found by the GA is equal to or better than the result of SPH-I and in many cases the average error ratio of the GA is an order of magnitude better than that of SPH-I. The runtime of the GA is moderate for all test examples. This is in contrast to SPH-I as well as the branch-and-cut algorithms, for which the runtime in some cases are extremely high
Parameterized Complexity Dichotomy for Steiner Multicut
The Steiner Multicut problem asks, given an undirected graph G, terminals
sets T1,...,Tt V(G) of size at most p, and an integer k, whether
there is a set S of at most k edges or nodes s.t. of each set Ti at least one
pair of terminals is in different connected components of G \ S. This problem
generalizes several graph cut problems, in particular the Multicut problem (the
case p = 2), which is fixed-parameter tractable for the parameter k [Marx and
Razgon, Bousquet et al., STOC 2011].
We provide a dichotomy of the parameterized complexity of Steiner Multicut.
That is, for any combination of k, t, p, and the treewidth tw(G) as constant,
parameter, or unbounded, and for all versions of the problem (edge deletion and
node deletion with and without deletable terminals), we prove either that the
problem is fixed-parameter tractable or that the problem is hard (W[1]-hard or
even (para-)NP-complete). We highlight that:
- The edge deletion version of Steiner Multicut is fixed-parameter tractable
for the parameter k+t on general graphs (but has no polynomial kernel, even on
trees). We present two proofs: one using the randomized contractions technique
of Chitnis et al, and one relying on new structural lemmas that decompose the
Steiner cut into important separators and minimal s-t cuts.
- In contrast, both node deletion versions of Steiner Multicut are W[1]-hard
for the parameter k+t on general graphs.
- All versions of Steiner Multicut are W[1]-hard for the parameter k, even
when p=3 and the graph is a tree plus one node. Hence, the results of Marx and
Razgon, and Bousquet et al. do not generalize to Steiner Multicut.
Since we allow k, t, p, and tw(G) to be any constants, our characterization
includes a dichotomy for Steiner Multicut on trees (for tw(G) = 1), and a
polynomial time versus NP-hardness dichotomy (by restricting k,t,p,tw(G) to

A Fixed Parameter Tractable Approximation Scheme for the Optimal Cut Graph of a Surface
Given a graph cellularly embedded on a surface of genus , a
cut graph is a subgraph of such that cutting along yields a
topological disk. We provide a fixed parameter tractable approximation scheme
for the problem of computing the shortest cut graph, that is, for any
, we show how to compute a approximation of
the shortest cut graph in time .
Our techniques first rely on the computation of a spanner for the problem
using the technique of brick decompositions, to reduce the problem to the case
of bounded tree-width. Then, to solve the bounded tree-width case, we introduce
a variant of the surface-cut decomposition of Ru\'e, Sau and Thilikos, which
may be of independent interest
Network Design Problems with Bounded Distances via Shallow-Light Steiner Trees
In a directed graph with non-correlated edge lengths and costs, the
\emph{network design problem with bounded distances} asks for a cost-minimal
spanning subgraph subject to a length bound for all node pairs. We give a
bi-criteria -approximation for this
problem. This improves on the currently best known linear approximation bound,
at the cost of violating the distance bound by a factor of at
most~.
In the course of proving this result, the related problem of \emph{directed
shallow-light Steiner trees} arises as a subproblem. In the context of directed
graphs, approximations to this problem have been elusive. We present the first
non-trivial result by proposing a
-ap\-proxi\-ma\-tion, where are the
terminals.
Finally, we show how to apply our results to obtain an
-approximation for
