    Detection of postural transitions using machine learning

    The purpose of this project is to study the nature of human activity recognition and prepare a dataset from volunteers doing various activities which can be used for constructing the various parts of a machine learning model which is used to identify each volunteers posture transitions accurately. This report presents the problem definition, equipment used, previous work in this area of human activity recognition and the resolution of the problem along with results. Also this report sheds light on the process and the steps taken to undertake this endeavour of human activity recognition such as building of a dataset, pre-processing the data by applying filters and various windowing length techniques, splitting the data into training and testing data, performance of feature selection and feature extraction and finally selecting the model for training and testing which provides maximum accuracy and least misclassification rates. The tools used for this project includes a laptop equipped with MATLAB and EXCEL and MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC respectively which have been used for data processing, model training and feature selection and Labelling respectively. The data has been collected using an Inertial Measurement Unit contains 3 tri-axial Accelerometers, 1 Gyroscope, 1 Magnetometer and 1 Pressure sensor. For this project only the Accelerometers, Gyroscope and the Pressure sensor is used. The sensor is made by the members of the lab named ‘The Technical Research Centre for Dependency Care and Autonomous Living (CETpD) at the UPC-ETSEIB campus. The results obtained have been satisfactory, and the objectives set have been fulfilled. There is room for possible improvements through expanding the scope of the project such as detection of chronic disorders or providing posture based statistics to the end user or even just achieving a higher rate of sensitivity of transitions of posture by using better features and increasing the dataset size by increasing the number of volunteers.Incomin

    Wearable sensor technology has gradually extended its usability into a wide range of well-known applications. Wearable sensors can typically assess and quantify the wearer’s physiology and are commonly employed for human activity detection and quantified self-assessment. Wearable sensors are increasingly utilised to monitor patient health, rapidly assist with disease diagnosis, and help predict and often improve patient outcomes. Clinicians use various self-report questionnaires and well-known tests to report patient symptoms and assess their functional ability. These assessments are time consuming and costly and depend on subjective patient recall. Moreover, measurements may not accurately demonstrate the patient’s functional ability whilst at home. Wearable sensors can be used to detect and quantify specific movements in different applications. The volume of data collected by wearable sensors during long-term assessment of ambulatory movement can become immense in tuple size.     abstract: Wearable robotics has gained huge popularity in recent years due to its wide applications in rehabilitation, military, and industrial fields. The weakness of the skeletal muscles in the aging population and neurological injuries such as stroke and spinal cord injuries seriously limit the abilities of these individuals to perform daily activities. Therefore, there is an increasing attention in the development of wearable robots to assist the elderly and patients with disabilities for motion assistance and rehabilitation. In military and industrial sectors, wearable robots can increase the productivity of workers and soldiers. It is important for the wearable robots to maintain smooth interaction with the user while evolving in complex environments with minimum effort from the user. Therefore, the recognition of the user's activities such as walking or jogging in real time becomes essential to provide appropriate assistance based on the activity. This dissertation proposes two real-time human activity recognition algorithms intelligent fuzzy inference (IFI) algorithm and Amplitude omega (AωA \omega) algorithm to identify the human activities, i.e., stationary and locomotion activities. The IFI algorithm uses knee angle and ground contact forces (GCFs) measurements from four inertial measurement units (IMUs) and a pair of smart shoes. Whereas, the AωA \omega algorithm is based on thigh angle measurements from a single IMU. This dissertation also attempts to address the problem of online tuning of virtual impedance for an assistive robot based on real-time gait and activity measurement data to personalize the assistance for different users. An automatic impedance tuning (AIT) approach is presented for a knee assistive device (KAD) in which the IFI algorithm is used for real-time activity measurements. This dissertation also proposes an adaptive oscillator method known as amplitude omega adaptive oscillator (AωAOA\omega AO) method for HeSA (hip exoskeleton for superior augmentation) to provide bilateral hip assistance during human locomotion activities. The AωA \omega algorithm is integrated into the adaptive oscillator method to make the approach robust for different locomotion activities. Experiments are performed on healthy subjects to validate the efficacy of the human activities recognition algorithms and control strategies proposed in this dissertation. Both the activity recognition algorithms exhibited higher classification accuracy with less update time. The results of AIT demonstrated that the KAD assistive torque was smoother and EMG signal of Vastus Medialis is reduced, compared to constant impedance and finite state machine approaches. The AωAOA\omega AO method showed real-time learning of the locomotion activities signals for three healthy subjects while wearing HeSA. To understand the influence of the assistive devices on the inherent dynamic gait stability of the human, stability analysis is performed.     Smart Footwear Insole for Recognition of Foot Pronation and Supination Using Neural Networks

    Abnormal foot postures during gait are common sources of pain and pathologies of the lower limbs. Measurements of foot plantar pressures in both dynamic and static conditions can detect these abnormal foot postures and prevent possible pathologies. In this work, a plantar pressure measurement system is developed to identify areas with higher or lower pressure load. This system is composed of an embedded system placed in the insole and a user application. The instrumented insole consists of a low-power microcontroller, seven pressure sensors and a low-energy bluetooth module. The user application receives and shows the insole pressure information in real-time and, finally, provides information about the foot posture. In order to identify the different pressure states and obtain the final information of the study with greater accuracy, a Deep Learning neural network system has been integrated into the user application. The neural network can be trained using a stored dataset in order to obtain the classification results in real-time. Results prove that this system provides an accuracy over 90% using a training dataset of 3000+ steps from 6 different users.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-

    Wearable Sensors and Smart Devices to Monitor Rehabilitation Parameters and Sports Performance: An Overview

    A quantitative evaluation of kinetic parameters, the joint’s range of motion, heart rate, and breathing rate, can be employed in sports performance tracking and rehabilitation monitoring following injuries or surgical operations. However, many of the current detection systems are expensive and designed for clinical use, requiring the presence of a physician and medical staff to assist users in the device’s positioning and measurements. The goal of wearable sensors is to overcome the limitations of current devices, enabling the acquisition of a user’s vital signs directly from the body in an accurate and non–invasive way. In sports activities, wearable sensors allow athletes to monitor performance and body movements objectively, going beyond the coach’s subjective evaluation limits. The main goal of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of wearable technologies and sensing systems to detect and monitor the physiological parameters of patients during post–operative rehabilitation and athletes’ training, and to present evidence that supports the efficacy of this technology for healthcare applications. First, a classification of the human physiological parameters acquired from the human body by sensors attached to sensitive skin locations or worn as a part of garments is introduced, carrying important feedback on the user’s health status. Then, a detailed description of the electromechanical transduction mechanisms allows a comparison of the technologies used in wearable applications to monitor sports and rehabilitation activities. This paves the way for an analysis of wearable technologies, providing a comprehensive comparison of the current state of the art of available sensors and systems. Comparative and statistical analyses are provided to point out useful insights for defining the best technologies and solutions for monitoring body movements. Lastly, the presented review is compared with similar ones reported in the literature to highlight its strengths and novelties

    A virtual reality input device for sports-related rehabilitation

    Abstract. This work entails the hardware design, manufacturing and implementation of a VR controller device tailored for people with specific sports-related injuries. The target case of this thesis is the tennis elbow injury, where the designed controller helps them interface easily to the VR environment that is designed for their therapy. The sensors used are carefully selected in order to adequately capture the therapy exercise movements related to this kind of injury. For example, the use FSRs (Force Sensitive Resistors) that are put on the surface of a test object helps to detect a grasp during the exercise. The hardware design and manufacturing was done for a VR controller device that would give the desired performance, using Arduino IDE for its software development. In addition to this, the design of the VR environment allowed for an immersive VR experience for the rehabilitation. An experiment was carried out with eight participants, where they were asked to perform two exercises that involve grasping the test object. A series of questions were asked to them as part of the experimental evaluation. The results showed positive indications about the participants’ experience

    Body-Area Capacitive or Electric Field Sensing for Human Activity Recognition and Human-Computer Interaction: A Comprehensive Survey

    Due to the fact that roughly sixty percent of the human body is essentially composed of water, the human body is inherently a conductive object, being able to, firstly, form an inherent electric field from the body to the surroundings and secondly, deform the distribution of an existing electric field near the body. Body-area capacitive sensing, also called body-area electric field sensing, is becoming a promising alternative for wearable devices to accomplish certain tasks in human activity recognition and human-computer interaction. Over the last decade, researchers have explored plentiful novel sensing systems backed by the body-area electric field. On the other hand, despite the pervasive exploration of the body-area electric field, a comprehensive survey does not exist for an enlightening guideline. Moreover, the various hardware implementations, applied algorithms, and targeted applications result in a challenging task to achieve a systematic overview of the subject. This paper aims to fill in the gap by comprehensively summarizing the existing works on body-area capacitive sensing so that researchers can have a better view of the current exploration status. To this end, we first sorted the explorations into three domains according to the involved body forms: body-part electric field, whole-body electric field, and body-to-body electric field, and enumerated the state-of-art works in the domains with a detailed survey of the backed sensing tricks and targeted applications. We then summarized the three types of sensing frontends in circuit design, which is the most critical part in body-area capacitive sensing, and analyzed the data processing pipeline categorized into three kinds of approaches.     An IMU-Based Wearable System for Respiratory Rate Estimation in Static and Dynamic Conditions

    Purpose: Breathing parameters change with activity and posture, but currently available solutions can perform measurements only during static conditions. Methods: This article presents an innovative wearable sensor system constituted by three inertial measurement units to simultaneously estimate respiratory rate (RR) in static and dynamic conditions and perform human activity recognition (HAR) with the same sensing principle. Two units are aimed at detecting chest wall breathing-related movements (one on the thorax, one on the abdomen); the third is on the lower back. All units compute the quaternions describing the subject’s movement and send data continuously with the ANT transmission protocol to an app. The 20 healthy subjects involved in the research (9 men, 11 women) were between 23 and 54 years old, with mean age 26.8, mean height 172.5 cm and mean weight 66.9 kg. Data from these subjects during different postures or activities were collected and analyzed to extract RR. Results: Statistically significant differences between dynamic activities (“walking slow”, “walking fast”, “running” and “cycling”) and static postures were detected (p < 0.05), confirming the obtained measurements are in line with physiology even during dynamic activities. Data from the reference unit only and from all three units were used as inputs to artificial intelligence methods for HAR. When the data from the reference unit were used, the Gated Recurrent Unit was the best performing method (97% accuracy). With three units, a 1D Convolutional Neural Network was the best performing (99% accuracy). Conclusion: Overall, the proposed solution shows it is possible to perform simultaneous HAR and RR measurements in static and dynamic conditions with the same sensor system
