Evolutionary Computation 2020
Intelligent optimization is based on the mechanism of computational intelligence to refine a suitable feature model, design an effective optimization algorithm, and then to obtain an optimal or satisfactory solution to a complex problem. Intelligent algorithms are key tools to ensure global optimization quality, fast optimization efficiency and robust optimization performance. Intelligent optimization algorithms have been studied by many researchers, leading to improvements in the performance of algorithms such as the evolutionary algorithm, whale optimization algorithm, differential evolution algorithm, and particle swarm optimization. Studies in this arena have also resulted in breakthroughs in solving complex problems including the green shop scheduling problem, the severe nonlinear problem in one-dimensional geodesic electromagnetic inversion, error and bug finding problem in software, the 0-1 backpack problem, traveler problem, and logistics distribution center siting problem. The editors are confident that this book can open a new avenue for further improvement and discoveries in the area of intelligent algorithms. The book is a valuable resource for researchers interested in understanding the principles and design of intelligent algorithms
Automated Design of Metaheuristic Algorithms: A Survey
Metaheuristics have gained great success in academia and practice because
their search logic can be applied to any problem with available solution
representation, solution quality evaluation, and certain notions of locality.
Manually designing metaheuristic algorithms for solving a target problem is
criticized for being laborious, error-prone, and requiring intensive
specialized knowledge. This gives rise to increasing interest in automated
design of metaheuristic algorithms. With computing power to fully explore
potential design choices, the automated design could reach and even surpass
human-level design and could make high-performance algorithms accessible to a
much wider range of researchers and practitioners. This paper presents a broad
picture of automated design of metaheuristic algorithms, by conducting a survey
on the common grounds and representative techniques in terms of design space,
design strategies, performance evaluation strategies, and target problems in
this field
CHANGE-READY MPC SYSTEMS AND PROGRESSIVE MODELING: VISION, PRINCIPLES, AND APPLICATIONS
The last couple of decades have witnessed a level of fast-paced development of new ideas, products, manufacturing technologies, manufacturing practices, customer expectations, knowledge transition, and civilization movements, as it has never before. In today\u27s manufacturing world, change became an intrinsic characteristic that is addressed everywhere. How to deal with change, how to manage it, how to bind to it, how to steer it, and how to create a value out of it, were the key drivers that brought this research to existence. Change-Ready Manufacturing Planning and Control (CMPC) systems are presented as the first answer. CMPC characteristics, change drivers, and some principles of Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) are interwoven to present a blueprint of a new framework and mind-set in the manufacturing planning and control field, CMPC systems. In order to step further and make the internals of CMPC systems/components change-ready, an enabling modeling approach was needed. Progressive Modeling (PM), a forward-looking multi-disciplinary modeling approach, is developed in order to modernize the modeling process of today\u27s complex industrial problems and create pragmatic solutions for them. It is designed to be pragmatic, highly sophisticated, and revolves around many seminal principles that either innovated or imported from many disciplines: Systems Analysis and Design, Software Engineering, Advanced Optimization Algorisms, Business Concepts, Manufacturing Strategies, Operations Management, and others. Problems are systemized, analyzed, componentized; their logic and their solution approaches are redefined to make them progressive (ready to change, adapt, and develop further). Many innovations have been developed in order to enrich the modeling process and make it a well-assorted toolkit able to address today\u27s tougher, larger, and more complex industrial problems. PM brings so many novel gadgets in its toolbox: function templates, advanced notation, cascaded mathematical models, mathematical statements, society of decision structures, couplers--just to name a few. In this research, PM has been applied to three different applications: a couple of variants of Aggregate Production Planning (APP) Problem and the novel Reconfiguration and Operations Planning (ROP) problem. The latest is pioneering in both the Reconfigurable Manufacturing and the Operations Management fields. All the developed models, algorithms, and results reveal that the new analytical and computational power gained by PM development and demonstrate its ability to create a new generation of unmatched large scale and scope system problems and their integrated solutions. PM has the potential to be instrumental toolkit in the development of Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems. In terms of other potential applications domain, PM is about to spark a new paradigm in addressing large-scale system problems of many engineering and scientific fields in a highly pragmatic way without losing the scientific rigor
Softwarization of Large-Scale IoT-based Disasters Management Systems
The Internet of Things (IoT) enables objects to interact and cooperate with each other for reaching common objectives. It is very useful in large-scale disaster management systems where humans are likely to fail when they attempt to perform search and rescue operations in high-risk sites. IoT can indeed play a critical role in all phases of large-scale disasters (i.e. preparedness, relief, and recovery). Network softwarization aims at designing, architecting, deploying, and managing network components primarily based on software programmability properties. It relies on key technologies, such as cloud computing, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), and Software Defined Networking (SDN). The key benefits are agility and cost efficiency. This thesis proposes softwarization approaches to tackle the key challenges related to large-scale IoT based disaster management systems.
A first challenge faced by large-scale IoT disaster management systems is the dynamic formation of an optimal coalition of IoT devices for the tasks at hand. Meeting this challenge is critical for cost efficiency. A second challenge is an interoperability. IoT environments remain highly heterogeneous. However, the IoT devices need to interact. Yet another challenge is Quality of Service (QoS). Disaster management applications are known to be very QoS sensitive, especially when it comes to delay.
To tackle the first challenge, we propose a cloud-based architecture that enables the formation of efficient coalitions of IoT devices for search and rescue tasks. The proposed architecture enables the publication and discovery of IoT devices belonging to different cloud providers. It also comes with a coalition formation algorithm. For the second challenge, we propose an NFV and SDN based - architecture for on-the-fly IoT gateway provisioning. The gateway functions are provisioned as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) that are chained on-the-fly in the IoT domain using SDN. When it comes to the third challenge, we rely on fog computing to meet the QoS and propose algorithms that provision IoT applications components in hybrid NFV based - cloud/fogs. Both stationary and mobile fog nodes are considered. In the case of mobile fog nodes, a Tabu Search-based heuristic is proposed. It finds a near-optimal solution and we numerically show that it is faster than the Integer Linear Programming (ILP) solution by several orders of magnitude

Very often, they are characterized by the large number of variables and the presence of multiple conflicting objectives to be optimized at the same time. These kind of problems are, usually, hard to be solved optimally, and their solutions have been considered a challenge for a long time. Metaheuristic algorithms aim at finding an acceptable approximation to the optimal solution in a reasonable computational time. The research on metaheuristics remains an attractive area and receives growing attention. One of the trends in this scenario are the hybrid approaches, in which different methods and concepts are combined aiming to propose more efficient approaches. In this thesis, we have proposed hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. Our proposals are based on (i) the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D framework), (ii) the bio-inspired metaheuristic ant colony optimization, and (iii) the probabilistic models from the estimation of distribution algorithms. Our algorithms are considered MOEA/D variants. In our MOEA/D variants, besides the traditional genetic operators, we can instantiate different models as the variation step (reproduction). Moreover, we include some design modifications into the frameworks to control the convergence and the diversity during their search (evolution). We have addressed some important problems from the literature, e.g., the multi-objective unconstrained binary quadratic programming, the multiobjective permutation flowshop scheduling problem, and the problems characterized by deception. As a result, we show that our proposed frameworks are able to solve these problems efficiently by outperforming the state-of-the-art approaches in most of the cases considered. We show that the MOEA/D guidelines hybridized to other metaheuristic components and concepts is a powerful strategy for solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems.
