Due to the popularity of E-business applications, Web-based database application development has become an important topic in the information systems curriculum. There is a need to explore ways to teach such a topic effectively. This paper presents a teaching case on the development of an e-business application for Fortune Invest Inc. using Java server technology with Java Database Connectivity to Oracle databases. The teaching case has the following features: 1) complete coverage of the fundamentals of e-business application development. 2) systematic integration of the knowledge in database design, implementation, programming languages, networking, Web development and system analysis. 3) script execution independent of any platforms. 4) accessible web sites on the Internet with sample code provided. The teaching case was tested in upper division CIS courses in three academic quarters during the past two years at California State University, Los Angeles. The teaching approach emphasizes learning by doing in order to motivate the student and to produce an effective learning outcome. The paper is accompanied by comprehensive teaching notes as well as executable programming scripts

An optimal transportation routing approach using GIS-based dynamic traffic flows

This paper examines the value of real-time traffic information gathered through Geographic Information Systems for achieving an optimal vehicle routing within a dynamically stochastic transportation network. We present a systematic approach in determining the dynamically varying parameters and implementation attributes that were used for the development of a Web-based transportation routing application integrated with real-time GIS services. We propose and implement an optimal routing algorithm by modifying Dijkstra’s algorithm in order to incorporate stochastically changing traffic flows. We describe the significant features of our Web application in making use of the real-time dynamic traffic flow information from GIS services towards achieving total costs savings and vehicle usage reduction. These features help users and vehicle drivers in improving their service levels and productivity as the Web application enables them to interactively find the optimal path and in identifying destinations effectively

The Web Based Applications for Energy Management System in UiTM has established itself as a strong medium for distributed computing: a network user interface that is powerful and an independent platform. This research was involved with the development of Web Based Applications for Energy Management System for providing Web application system, Web monitoring System and Genetic algorithm Based Network Reconfiguration Technique for loss minimization in the UiTM Distribution System. Web Based Applications for Energy Management System can be broadly classified into three basic methods. The Web Monitoring System is a sort of information system in which during a certain time on a systematic way, data are being collected, handled, managed, analyzed and presented data from energy meter (33 ION™ ). The Web Application System program is designed for the client to configure a system (e.g calculates a load flow). The development on Web Application system uses An ActiveX technology approach. The Genetic Algorithm Based Network Reconfiguration Technique for loss minimization in the UiTM Distribution System is also proposed based on general combinatorial optimization algorithm. The development uses language Active Server Pages (ASP), HTML and C/C++. This program was tested on a Windows platform, which is a typical development environment for Web Based Applications for Energy Management System in UiTM. It provides access to UiTM’s personnel via Internet or Network UiTM. The results show that optimal configuration of 32 number of feeder or the substation in UiTM could provide loss minimization, reduces the active power loss in a power system at UiTM distribution network

Most of the commercial and industrial web applications are complex, difficult to implement, risky to maintain and requires deep understanding of the requirements for customization. As today's software market is more competitive, productivity has become a major concern in software development industry. The aim of this research is to design and develop an application framework for accelerating web development productivity through object-oriented technology. It allows customization, design reuse and automatic code generation to support productivity improvement as a breakthrough solution for the given problem. This research employed systematic literature review (SLR) to identify the source of complexity and productivity factors. Agile development methodology was used to design the framework and it was validated by empirical data from two commercial projects. Results showed that object-oriented application framework (OOAF) has significant factors that affect productivity and dramatically improve higher productivity over traditional approach. It has fulfilled the current needs by reducing complexities, development efforts and accelerates web development productivity. This research contributes in the area of software engineering, specifically in the field of software productivity improvement and software customization. These will lead to faster development time for software industries

Web-based data collection: detailed methods of a questionnaire and data gathering tool

There have been dramatic advances in the development of web-based data collection instruments. This paper outlines a systematic web-based approach to facilitate this process through locally developed code and to describe the results of using this process after two years of data collection. We provide a detailed example of a web-based method that we developed for a study in Starr County, Texas, assessing high school students' work and health status. This web-based application includes data instrument design, data entry and management, and data tables needed to store the results that attempt to maximize the advantages of this data collection method. The software also efficiently produces a coding manual, web-based statistical summary and crosstab reports, as well as input templates for use by statistical packages. Overall, web-based data entry using a dynamic approach proved to be a very efficient and effective data collection system. This data collection method expedited data processing and analysis and eliminated the need for cumbersome and expensive transfer and tracking of forms, data entry, and verification. The code has been made available for non-profit use only to the public health research community as a free download [1]

Topicality/Problem. Idea management systems (IMS) are manageable, systematic tools, tool kits or complex systems that helps to generate and evaluate ideas and are an important element of organizational development. Many well-known organizations (e.g. Volkswagen, Microsoft, GE Healthcare, Procter and Gamble, Boeing, Siemens, etc) are successfully applying web-based IMS. But there is no research that explores the impact of web-based IMS on intellectual resources development. Research aim – to research the impact of IMS on intellectual resources development and to provide recommendations to practitioners for its broader assistance in enterprises to ensure innovation acceleration. Methodological approach. The empirical research was based on 447 enterprise survey applying. The research results show the following results: IMS application has resulted in a new intellectual resource, in a patents and improved innovation acceleration.Research limitations. Survey research may limit the generalisability of the result, because the survey target group is commercially available web-based IMS applied enterprises.Originality/value.  The research based on the empirical data analysis contributes to understanding the directions and significance of IMS impact on intellectual resources development.

In this paper we present a model-based approach for the development of physical hypermedia applications, i.e. those mobile (Web) applications in which physical and digital objects are related and explored using the hypermedia paradigm. We describe an extension of the Object-Oriented Hypermedia Design Method (OOHDM) and present an improvement of the popular Model-View-Controller (MVC) metaphor to incorporate the concept of located object; we illustrate the idea with a framework implementation using Jakarta Struts. We first review the state of the art of this kind of software systems, stressing the need of a systematic design and implementation approach; we briefly present a light extension to the OOHDM design approach, incorporating physical objects and “walkable” links. We next present a Web application framework for deploying physical hypermedia software and show an example of use. We evaluate our approach and finally we discuss some further work we are pursuingFacultad de InformáticaLaboratorio de Investigación y Formación en Informática Avanzada (LIFIA
