Benchmarks for Parity Games (extended version)
We propose a benchmark suite for parity games that includes all benchmarks
that have been used in the literature, and make it available online. We give an
overview of the parity games, including a description of how they have been
generated. We also describe structural properties of parity games, and using
these properties we show that our benchmarks are representative. With this work
we provide a starting point for further experimentation with parity games.Comment: The corresponding tool and benchmarks are available from

Permutation Games for the Weakly Aconjunctive -Calculus
We introduce a natural notion of limit-deterministic parity automata and
present a method that uses such automata to construct satisfiability games for
the weakly aconjunctive fragment of the -calculus. To this end we devise a
method that determinizes limit-deterministic parity automata of size with
priorities through limit-deterministic B\"uchi automata to deterministic
parity automata of size and with
priorities. The construction relies on limit-determinism to avoid the full
complexity of the Safra/Piterman-construction by using partial permutations of
states in place of Safra-Trees. By showing that limit-deterministic parity
automata can be used to recognize unsuccessful branches in pre-tableaux for the
weakly aconjunctive -calculus, we obtain satisfiability games of size
with priorities for weakly aconjunctive
input formulas of size and alternation-depth . A prototypical
implementation that employs a tableau-based global caching algorithm to solve
these games on-the-fly shows promising initial results
And-or tableaux for fixpoint logics with converse: LTL, CTL, PDL and CPDL
Over the last forty years, computer scientists have invented or borrowed numerous logics for reasoning about digital systems. Here, I would like to concentrate on three of them: Linear Time Temporal Logic (LTL), branching time Computation Tree temporal Logic (CTL), and Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL), with and without converse. More specifically, I would like to present results and techniques on how to solve the satisfiability problem in these logics, with global assumptions, using the tableau method. The issues that arise are the typical tensions between computational complexity, practicality and scalability. Satisfiability Games for Branching-Time Logics
The satisfiability problem for branching-time temporal logics like CTL*, CTL
and CTL+ has important applications in program specification and verification.
Their computational complexities are known: CTL* and CTL+ are complete for
doubly exponential time, CTL is complete for single exponential time. Some
decision procedures for these logics are known; they use tree automata,
tableaux or axiom systems. In this paper we present a uniform game-theoretic
framework for the satisfiability problem of these branching-time temporal
logics. We define satisfiability games for the full branching-time temporal
logic CTL* using a high-level definition of winning condition that captures the
essence of well-foundedness of least fixpoint unfoldings. These winning
conditions form formal languages of \omega-words. We analyse which kinds of
deterministic {\omega}-automata are needed in which case in order to recognise
these languages. We then obtain a reduction to the problem of solving parity or
B\"uchi games. The worst-case complexity of the obtained algorithms matches the
known lower bounds for these logics. This approach provides a uniform, yet
complexity-theoretically optimal treatment of satisfiability for branching-time
temporal logics. It separates the use of temporal logic machinery from the use
of automata thus preserving a syntactical relationship between the input
formula and the object that represents satisfiability, i.e. a winning strategy
in a parity or B\"uchi game. The games presented here work on a Fischer-Ladner
closure of the input formula only. Last but not least, the games presented here
come with an attempt at providing tool support for the satisfiability problem
of complex branching-time logics like CTL* and CTL+
Priority Promotion with Parysian Flair
We develop an algorithm that combines the advantages of priority promotion - one of the leading approaches to solving large parity games in practice - with the quasi-polynomial time guarantees offered by Parys' algorithm. Hybridising these algorithms sounds both natural and difficult, as they both generalise the classic recursive algorithm in different ways that appear to be irreconcilable: while the promotion transcends the call structure, the guarantees change on each level. We show that an interface that respects both is not only effective, but also efficient
Faithful Modeling of Product Lines with Kripke Structures and Modal Logic
Software product lines are now an established framework for software design. They are specified by special diagrams called feature models. For formal analysis, the latter are usually encoded by Boolean propositional theories. We discuss a major deficiency of this semantics, and show that it can be fixed by considering a product to be an instantiation process rather than its final result. We call intermediate states of this process partial products, and argue that what a feature model really defines is a poset of its partial products. We argue that such structures can be viewed as special Kripke structure that we call partial product Kripke structures, ppKS. To specify these Kripke structures, we propose a CTL-based logic, called partial product CTL, ppCTL. We show how to represent a feature model M by a ppCTL theory ML(M) (ML stands for modal logic) such that any ppKS satisfying the theory is equal to the partial product line determined by M. Hence, ML(M) can be considered a sound and complete representation of M. We also discuss several applications of the modal logic view in feature modeling, including refactoring of feature models
