A Review of Infrastructures to Process Big Multimedia Data

    Get PDF
In the last years, the volume of information is growing faster than ever before, moving from small to huge, structured to unstructured datasets like text, image, audio and video. The purpose of processing the data is aimed to extract relevant information on trends, challenges and opportunities; all these studies with large volumes of data. The increase in the power of parallel computing enabled the use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to take advantage of the processing capabilities offered by new architectures on large volumes of data. For this reason, it is necessary to find mechanisms that allow classify and organize them to facilitate to the users the extraction of the required information. The processing of these data requires the use of classification techniques that will be reviewed. This work analyzes different studies carried out on the use of ML for processing large volumes of data (Big Multimedia Data) and proposes a classification, using as criteria, the hardware infrastructures used in works of machine learning parallel approaches applied to large volumes of data

    Technological Convergence: a Strategic Perspective

    Get PDF
The information and communication technologies (ICT) sectors are in a process of technological convergence. Determinant factors in this process are the liberalisation of the telecommunications markets and technological change. Many firms are engaged in a process of mergers and alliances to position themselves in this new framework. Technological and demand uncertainties are very important. Our objective in this paper is to study the economic determinants of the strategies of the firms. With this aim, we review some key technological and demand aspects. We shed some light on the strategic motivations of the firms by establishing a parallel with the evolution of the retailing sector.Technological Convergence; Demand Uncertainty; technological Uncertainty; Technology Life Cycle; Internet; Multimedia; Strategy

Integrated Support for Handoff Management and Context-Awareness in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless communications is stressing the need for the development of mobility-aware services. Device mobility requires services adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and intermittent discontinuities. Heterogeneity of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation, since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is required for each solution. This paper presents a middleware architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service development. The architecture hides technology-specific mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness and handoff management. The architecture prototype works with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most widespread wireless technologies. In addition, the paper discusses motivations and design details in the challenging context of mobile multimedia streaming applications

CloudJet4BigData: Streamlining Big Data via an Accelerated Socket Interface

    Get PDF
Big data needs to feed users with fresh processing results and cloud platforms can be used to speed up big data applications. This paper describes a new data communication protocol (CloudJet) for long distance and large volume big data accessing operations to alleviate the large latencies encountered in sharing big data resources in the clouds. It encapsulates a dynamic multi-stream/multi-path engine at the socket level, which conforms to Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) and thereby can accelerate any POSIX-compatible applications across IP based networks. It was demonstrated that CloudJet accelerates typical big data applications such as very large database (VLDB), data mining, media streaming and office applications by up to tenfold in real-world tests

Syrian Refugees and the Digital Passage to Europe: Smartphone Infrastructures and Affordances

    Get PDF
This research examines the role of smartphones in refugees’ journeys. It traces the risks and possibilities afforded by smartphones for facilitating information, communication, and migration flows in the digital passage to Europe. For the Syrian and Iraqi refugee respondents in this France-based qualitative study, smartphones are lifelines, as important as water and food. They afford the planning, navigation, and documentation of journeys, enabling regular contact with family, friends, smugglers, and those who help them. However, refugees are simultaneously exposed to new forms of exploitation and surveillance with smartphones as migrations are financialised by smugglers and criminalized by European policies, and the digital passage is dependent on a contingent range of sociotechnical and material assemblages. Through an infrastructural lens, we capture the dialectical dynamics of opportunity and vulnerability, and the forms of resilience and solidarity, that arise as forced migration and digital connectivity coincide
