    We are very excited to introduce this new book on spinal surgery, which follows the curriculum of the EUROSPINE basic and advanced diploma courses. The approach we take is a purely case-based one, in which each case illustrates the concepts surrounding the treatment of a given pathology, including the uncertainties and problems in decision-making. The readers will notice that in many instances a lack of evidence for a given treatment exists. So decisions taken are usually not a clearcut matter of black or white, but merely different shades of gray. Probably in a lot of cases, there is often more than one option to treat the patient. The authors were asked to convey this message to the reader, giving him a guidance as what would be accepted within the mainstream. In addition, the reader is provided with the most updated literature and evidence on the topic. Most of the authors are teachers in the courses of EUROSPINE or other national societies with often vast clinical experience and have given their own perspective and reasoning. We believe that the readers will profit very much from this variety and bandwidth of knowledge provided for them in the individual chapters. We have given the authors extensive liberty as to what they consider the best solution for their case. It is thus a representative picture of what is considered standard of care for spine pathologies in Europe. We hope that this book will be an ideal complement for trainees to the courses they take.     How religion influences the use of social media : the impact of the online user’s religiosity on perceived online privacy and the use of technology in Saudi Arabia.

    Religion has a significant effect on people’s lives. It impacts human behaviour, thoughts, morale standards, attitudes and values. The literature shows that religiosity has an effect also on consumer behaviour. However, the concept of religiosity has been under-researched due to the sensitivity of religion (Swimberghe, Flurry, & Parker, 2011). According to Vitell (2009) there is still a need to develop a vigorous theoretical understanding of the impact of religiosity on the consumer behaviour. This thesis contributes to that knowledge by developing a model to explain the effect of the religiosity of the online user on their use of social media. Current research does not fully explain the specifics of religious influences on online user behaviours. This thesis main goal is to build a model that can measure the effect of intrinsic religiosity on the use of social media. The proposed model uses the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) along with Privacy concern to measure the effect of religiosity on the use of social media. This thesis empirically tests the proposed model linking religiosity, privacy concerns, technology acceptance and the use of social media. Allport and Ross' (1967) religious orientation scale (ROS) is used to measure the intrinsic religiosity. Xu et al's., (2011a) model of privacy concern is used to measure privacy concerns when using social media. Venkatesh, Thong and Xu's (2012) unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) is used to measure the user acceptance of social media. Using partial least square structural equation modelling, intrinsic religiosity (ROS), and privacy concerns along with technology acceptance are shown to influence the use of social media. The results show that religion has an indirect effect on the use of social media through privacy concerns and technology acceptance. The results also show that the model can predict the effect of intrinsic religiosity on the use of social media to share and disclose information. The implications from this study are significant both for policy and practice for social media companies as well as users. Information from this study will help social media companies to maximize users’ involvement with social media. It will also benefit the industry and the literature by providing a sound model that can measure the impact of religion on the behaviour of users

    System of Systems conceptual design methodology for space exploration

    The scope of the research is to identify and develop a design methodology for System-of-System (a set of elements and sub-elements able to interact and cooperate in order to complete a mission), based on models, methods and tools, to support the decision makers during the space exploration scenarios design and evaluation activity in line with the concurrent design philosophy. Considering all combinations of system parameters (such as crew size, orbits, launchers, spacecraft, ground and space infrastructures), a large number of mission concept options are possible, even though not all of them are optimal or even feasible. The design methodology is particularly useful in the first phases of the design process (Phase 0 and A) to choose rationally and objectively the best mission concepts that ensure the higher probability of mission success in compliance with the high level requirements deriving from the “user needs”. The first phases of the project are particularly critical for the success of the entire mission because the results of this activity are the starting point of the more costly detailed design phases. Thus, any criticality in the baseline design will involve inevitably into undesirable and costly radical system redesigns during the advanced design phases. For this reason, it is important to develop reliable mathematical models that allow prediction of the system performances notwithstanding the poorly defined environment of very high complexity. In conjunction with the development of the design methodology for system-of-systems and in support of it, a software tool has been developed. The tool has been developed into Matlab environment and provides users with a useful graphical interface. The tool integrates the model of the mission concept, the models of the space elements at system and subsystem level, the cost-effectiveness model or value, the sensitivity and multi-objective optimization analysis. The tool supports users to find a system design solution in compliance with requirements and constraints, such as mass budgets and costs, and provides them with information about cost-effectiveness of the mission. The developed methodology has been applied for the design of several space elements (Man Tended Free Flyer, Cargo Logistic Vehicle, Rover Locomotion System) and several mission scenarios (Moon surface infrastructure support, Cis-Lunar infrastructure delivering, Cis-Lunar infrastructure logistic support), in order to assess advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method. The results of the design activity have been discussed and accepted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and have also been compared and presented to the scientific community. Finally, in a particular case, the study of the locomotion system of a lunar rover, the results of the methodology have been verified through the production and testing of the same system

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). Se evalúa el flujo de diseño de dicha tecnología a través del prototipado de varias aplicaciones de ingeniería (sistemas de control, coprocesadores aritméticos, procesadores de imagen, etc.), evidenciando un nivel de madurez viable ya para su explotación en la industria.Resum Aquesta tesi doctoral està orientada al disseny de sistemes electrònics empotrats basats en tecnologia hardware dinàmicament reconfigurable –disponible mitjançant dispositius lògics programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribueixin a la millora de la qualitat de vida de la societat.
