Towards a Framework for Aligning RFID Applications With Supply Chain Strategies

Supply chain management has two streams of strategies, namely lean and agile. However, current RFID applications tend to overlook supply chain strategies and are designed for obvious RFID applications, like simply replacing barcodes. However, the full potential of RFID might not be achieved when RFID applications are not aligned with the supply chain strategies. Therefore, this study analyzes the current literature to investigate whether RFID applications are indeed misaligned with their strategies. Results shows that RFID is still at its infancy and most RFID applications focus on cost reduction, a lean practice, and less attention has been paid on how RFID can satisfy customer demands, an agile practice. It is therefore suggested that management should ensure that RFID applications are aligned with their supply chain strategy, in order to gain the most benefits out of RFID

Indonesia has quite a lot of scattered wetlands in Sumatra, Borneo, and Papua so that it takes the right technology development to optimize the use of agricultural wetlands for welfare. Tidal wetlands will determine the success of the harvest of food crops, sometimes the tide caused the death of crops due to the amount of water beyond the plant it self or otherwise drought. A technology Radio Frequency Identificationor RFID is one way to monitor water levels in wetlands remotely using radiowaves. This technology is an automate detection system with information technology and communication devices without cables consisting of RFID, reader signal, and a computer. Reader will send signals to RFID to identify or communicate to move the data and will be responded to by the software installed in the computer. The software will immediately respond to convert the data that informed and also to filter or delete data that is not desirable. The data on wetland water level can be monitored as a function of time and recorded in the computer, making it easier to collect these data. These data will be used in planning for the time of planting and crops adapted to the conditions of water throughout the year. It is expected that increase in crop yields in the wetland have ups and downs throughout the year with the availability of accurate data on the water level every season throughout the yea

A Wireless RFID Based Document Management System

It is virtually impossible to do away completely with papers, files, folders and cabinets. A lot of essential services (e.g. legal and healthcare services) demand that written or printed copies of certain documents be carefully and orderly kept. But these files are regularly retrieved and updated. It becomes highly inefficient and time consuming to retrieve these files from where they are kept when their numbers become very large. This paper proposes the use of a low-cost Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) mechanism to manage documents filed and stored in shelves and cabinets. The proposed system makes use of a passive RFID tag and an interrogator. Radio signals in the low-frequency range (125 KHz) delivered inventory rounds (commands) that aid the speedy and timely retrieval of any file from a very large pool of others. The designed and implemented system worked perfectly well with a satisfactory modulation depth of 100% and a read range of two (2) meters

Adoption of RFID technologies in UK logistics: moderating roles of size, barcode experience and government support

Due to globalization, logistics has become an important part in the supply chain. Many logistics service providers have realised the importance of adoption of technologies that can help manufacturers, warehouses, and retailers to communicate with each other more efficiently. Among many logistics technologies, radio frequency identification (RFID) has been identified as an important technology to improve logistics operations and supply chain management, and thus is increasingly gaining both practitioners’ and researchers’ attention. The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of usability features of RFID in the adoption of the technology by the logistics sector in the UK. We have used questionnaire survey method to collect data from the UK logistics firms. The analysis of the data shows that the usability of RFID technology positively influences adoption of technology. We have further tested the moderating effects of firm size, experience with barcode use, and government support in adopting RFID. Our results show that government support strongly moderates the link between usability of RFID and its adoption but size and experience with barcode do not moderate this link. We elaborate the contributions of the study and managerial implications of our results in this pape
