    Conceptual roles of data in program: analyses and applications

    Program comprehension is the prerequisite for many software evolution and maintenance tasks. Currently, the research falls short in addressing how to build tools that can use domain-specific knowledge to provide powerful capabilities for extracting valuable information for facilitating program comprehension. Such capabilities are critical for working with large and complex program where program comprehension often is not possible without the help of domain-specific knowledge.;Our research advances the state-of-art in program analysis techniques based on domain-specific knowledge. The program artifacts including variables and methods are carriers of domain concepts that provide the key to understand programs. Our program analysis is directed by domain knowledge stored as domain-specific rules. Our analysis is iterative and interactive. It is based on flexible inference rules and inter-exchangeable and extensible information storage. We designed and developed a comprehensive software environment SeeCORE based on our knowledge-centric analysis methodology. The SeeCORE tool provides multiple views and abstractions to assist in understanding complex programs. The case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. We demonstrate the flexibility of our approach by analyzing two legacy programs in distinct domains

    New data analytics and visualization methods in personal data mining, cancer data analysis and sports data visualization

    In this dissertation, we discuss a reading profiling system, a biological data visualization system and a sports visualization system. Self-tracking is getting increasingly popular in the field of personal informatics. Reading profiling can be used as a personal data collection method. We present UUAT, an unintrusive user attention tracking system. In UUAT, we used user interaction data to develop technologies that help to pinpoint a users reading region (RR). Based on computed RR and user interaction data, UUAT can identify a readers reading struggle or interest. A biomarker is a measurable substance that may be used as an indicator of a particular disease. We developed CancerVis for visual and interactive analysis of cancer data and demonstrate how to apply this platform in cancer biomarker research. CancerVis provides interactive multiple views from different perspectives of a dataset. The views are synchronized so that users can easily link them to a same data entry. Furthermore, CancerVis supports data mining practice in cancer biomarker, such as visualization of optimal cutpoints and cutthrough exploration. Tennis match summarization helps after-live sports consumers assimilate an interested match. We developed TennisVis, a comprehensive match summarization and visualization platform. TennisVis offers chart- graph for a client to quickly get match facts. Meanwhile, TennisVis offers various queries of tennis points to satisfy diversified client preferences (such as volley shot, many-shot rally) of tennis fans. Furthermore, TennisVis offers video clips for every single tennis point and a recommendation rating is computed for each tennis play. A case study shows that TennisVis identifies more than 75% tennis points in full time match

    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

    A Large Visual, Qualitative, and Quantitative Dataset for Web Intelligence Applications

    The Web is the communication platform and source of information par excellence. The volume and complexity of its content have grown enormously, with organizing, retrieving, and cleaning Web information becoming a challenge for traditional techniques. Web intelligence is a novel research area to improve Web-based services and applications using artificial intelligence and automatic learning algorithms, for which a large amount of Web-related data are essential. Current datasets are, however, limited and do not combine visual representation and attributes of Web pages. Our work provides a large dataset of 49,438 Web pages, composed of webshots, along with qualitative and quantitative attributes. This dataset covers all the countries in the world and a wide range of topics, such as art, entertainment, economics, business, education, government, news, media, science, and the environment, addressing different cultural characteristics and varied design preferences. We use this dataset to develop three Web Intelligence applications: knowledge extraction on Web design using statistical analysis, recognition of error Web pages using a customized convolutional neural network (CNN) to eliminate invalid pages, and Web categorization based solely on screenshots using a CNN with transfer learning to assist search engines, indexers, and Web directories.This work has been funded by the grant awarded by the Central University of Ecuador through budget certification No. 34 of March 25, 2022 for the development of the research project with code: DOCT-DI-2020-37

    Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval

    Retrieval of images that lack a (suitable) annotations cannot be achieved through (traditional) Information Retrieval (IR) techniques. Access through such collections can be achieved through the application of computer vision techniques on the IR problem, which is baptized Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). In contrast with most purely technological approaches, the thesis Human-Centered Content-Based Image Retrieval approaches the problem from a human/user centered perspective. Psychophysical experiments were conducted in which people were asked to categorize colors. The data gathered from these experiments was fed to a Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transform (Schouten & Van den Broek, 2004), which enabled the segmentation of color space based on human perception (Van den Broek et al., 2008). This unique color space segementation was exploited for texture analysis and image segmentation, and subsequently for full-featured CBIR. In addition, a unique CBIR-benchmark was developed (Van den Broek et al., 2004, 2005). This benchmark was used to explore what and how several parameters (e.g., color and distance measures) of the CBIR process influence retrieval results. In contrast with other research, users judgements were assigned as metric.     Thermal Fingerprinting—Multi-Dimensional Analysis of Computational Loads

    Digital fingerprinting is used in several domains to identify and track variable activities and processes. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to categorize and recognize computational tasks based on thermal system information. The concept focuses on all kinds of data center environments to control required cooling capacity dynamically. The concept monitors basic thermal sensor data from each server and chassis entity. The respective, characteristic curves are merged with additional general system information, such as CPU load behavior, memory usage, and I/O characteristics. This results in two-dimensional thermal fingerprints, which are unique and achievable. The fingerprints are used as input for an adaptive, pre-active air-conditioning control system. This allows a precise estimation of the data center health status. First test cases and reference scenarios clarify a huge potential for energy savings without any negative aspects regarding health status or durability. In consequence, we provide a cost-efficient, light-weight, and flexible solution to optimize the energy-efficiency for a huge number of existing, conventional data center environments

    The development of corpus-based computer assisted composition program and its application for instrumental music composition

    In the last 20 years, we have seen the nourishing environment for the development of music software using a corpus of audio data expanding significantly, namely that synthesis techniques producing electronic sounds, and supportive tools for creative activities are the driving forces to the growth. Some software produces a sequence of sounds by means of synthesizing a chunk of source audio data retrieved from an audio database according to a rule. Since the matching of sources is processed according to their descriptive features extracted by FFT analysis, the quality of the result is significantly influenced by the outcomes of the Audio Analysis, Segmentation, and Decomposition. Also, the synthesis process often requires a considerable amount of sample data and this can become an obstacle to establish easy, inexpensive, and user-friendly applications on various kinds of devices. Therefore, it is crucial to consider how to treat the data and construct an efficient database for the synthesis. We aim to apply corpusbased synthesis techniques to develop a Computer Assisted Composition program, and to investigate the actual application of the program on ensemble pieces.
