    Low-Power Embedded Design Solutions and Low-Latency On-Chip Interconnect Architecture for System-On-Chip Design

    This dissertation presents three design solutions to support several key system-on-chip (SoC) issues to achieve low-power and high performance. These are: 1) joint source and channel decoding (JSCD) schemes for low-power SoCs used in portable multimedia systems, 2) efficient on-chip interconnect architecture for massive multimedia data streaming on multiprocessor SoCs (MPSoCs), and 3) data processing architecture for low-power SoCs in distributed sensor network (DSS) systems and its implementation. The first part includes a low-power embedded low density parity check code (LDPC) - H.264 joint decoding architecture to lower the baseband energy consumption of a channel decoder using joint source decoding and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). A low-power multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and H.264 video joint detector/decoder design that minimizes energy for portable, wireless embedded systems is also designed. In the second part, a link-level quality of service (QoS) scheme using unequal error protection (UEP) for low-power network-on-chip (NoC) and low latency on-chip network designs for MPSoCs is proposed. This part contains WaveSync, a low-latency focused network-on-chip architecture for globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) designs and a simultaneous dual-path routing (SDPR) scheme utilizing path diversity present in typical mesh topology network-on-chips. SDPR is akin to having a higher link width but without the significant hardware overhead associated with simple bus width scaling. The last part shows data processing unit designs for embedded SoCs. We propose a data processing and control logic design for a new radiation detection sensor system generating data at or above Peta-bits-per-second level. Implementation results show that the intended clock rate is achieved within the power target of less than 200mW. We also present a digital signal processing (DSP) accelerator supporting configurable MAC, FFT, FIR, and 3-D cross product operations for embedded SoCs. It consumes 12.35mW along with 0.167mm2 area at 333MHz

    High throughput low power decoder architectures for low density parity check codes

    A high throughput scalable decoder architecture, a tiling approach to reduce the complexity of the scalable architecture, and two low power decoding schemes have been proposed in this research. The proposed scalable design is generated from a serial architecture by scaling the combinational logic; memory partitioning and constructing a novel H matrix to make parallelization possible. The scalable architecture achieves a high throughput for higher values of the parallelization factor M. The switch logic used to route the bit nodes to the appropriate checks is an important constituent of the scalable architecture and its complexity is high with higher M. The proposed tiling approach is applied to the scalable architecture to simplify the switch logic and reduce gate complexity. The tiling approach generates patterns that are used to construct the H matrix by repeating a fixed number of those generated patterns. The advantages of the proposed approach are two-fold. First, the information stored about the H matrix is reduced by onethird. Second, the switch logic of the scalable architecture is simplified. The H matrix information is also embedded in the switch and no external memory is needed to store the H matrix. Scalable architecture and tiling approach are proposed at the architectural level of the LDPC decoder. We propose two low power decoding schemes that take advantage of the distribution of errors in the received packets. Both schemes use a hard iteration after a fixed number of soft iterations. The dynamic scheme performs X soft iterations, then a parity checker cHT that computes the number of parity checks in error. Based on cHT value, the decoder decides on performing either soft iterations or a hard iteration. The advantage of the hard iteration is so significant that the second low power scheme performs a fixed number of iterations followed by a hard iteration. To compensate the bit error rate performance, the number of soft iterations in this case is higher than that of those performed before cHT in the first scheme

    Baseband Processing for 5G and Beyond: Algorithms, VLSI Architectures, and Co-design

    In recent years the number of connected devices and the demand for high data-rates have been significantly increased. This enormous growth is more pronounced by the introduction of the Internet of things (IoT) in which several devices are interconnected to exchange data for various applications like smart homes and smart cities. Moreover, new applications such as eHealth, autonomous vehicles, and connected ambulances set new demands on the reliability, latency, and data-rate of wireless communication systems, pushing forward technology developments. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a technology, which is employed in the 5G standard, offering the benefits to fulfill these requirements. In massive MIMO systems, base station (BS) is equipped with a very large number of antennas, serving several users equipments (UEs) simultaneously in the same time and frequency resource. The high spatial multiplexing in massive MIMO systems, improves the data rate, energy and spectral efficiencies as well as the link reliability of wireless communication systems. The link reliability can be further improved by employing channel coding technique. Spatially coupled serially concatenated codes (SC-SCCs) are promising channel coding schemes, which can meet the high-reliability demands of wireless communication systems beyond 5G (B5G). Given the close-to-capacity error correction performance and the potential to implement a high-throughput decoder, this class of code can be a good candidate for wireless systems B5G. In order to achieve the above-mentioned advantages, sophisticated algorithms are required, which impose challenges on the baseband signal processing. In case of massive MIMO systems, the processing is much more computationally intensive and the size of required memory to store channel data is increased significantly compared to conventional MIMO systems, which are due to the large size of the channel state information (CSI) matrix. In addition to the high computational complexity, meeting latency requirements is also crucial. Similarly, the decoding-performance gain of SC-SCCs also do come at the expense of increased implementation complexity. Moreover, selecting the proper choice of design parameters, decoding algorithm, and architecture will be challenging, since spatial coupling provides new degrees of freedom in code design, and therefore the design space becomes huge. The focus of this thesis is to perform co-optimization in different design levels to address the aforementioned challenges/requirements. To this end, we employ system-level characteristics to develop efficient algorithms and architectures for the following functional blocks of digital baseband processing. First, we present a fast Fourier transform (FFT), an inverse FFT (IFFT), and corresponding reordering scheme, which can significantly reduce the latency of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) demodulation and modulation as well as the size of reordering memory. The corresponding VLSI architectures along with the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) implementation results in a 28 nm CMOS technology are introduced. In case of a 2048-point FFT/IFFT, the proposed design leads to 42% reduction in the latency and size of reordering memory. Second, we propose a low-complexity massive MIMO detection scheme. The key idea is to exploit channel sparsity to reduce the size of CSI matrix and eventually perform linear detection followed by a non-linear post-processing in angular domain using the compressed CSI matrix. The VLSI architecture for a massive MIMO with 128 BS antennas and 16 UEs along with the synthesis results in a 28 nm technology are presented. As a result, the proposed scheme reduces the complexity and required memory by 35%–73% compared to traditional detectors while it has better detection performance. Finally, we perform a comprehensive design space exploration for the SC-SCCs to investigate the effect of different design parameters on decoding performance, latency, complexity, and hardware cost. Then, we develop different decoding algorithms for the SC-SCCs and discuss the associated decoding performance and complexity. Also, several high-level VLSI architectures along with the corresponding synthesis results in a 12 nm process are presented, and various design tradeoffs are provided for these decoding schemes

    Modulation, Coding, and Receiver Design for Gigabit mmWave Communication

    While wireless communication has become an ubiquitous part of our daily life and the world around us, it has not been able yet to deliver the multi-gigabit throughput required for applications like high-definition video transmission or cellular backhaul communication. The throughput limitation of current wireless systems is mainly the result of a shortage of spectrum and the problem of congestion. Recent advancements in circuit design allow the realization of analog frontends for mmWave frequencies between 30GHz and 300GHz, making abundant unused spectrum accessible. However, the transition to mmWave carrier frequencies and GHz bandwidths comes with new challenges for wireless receiver design. Large variations of the channel conditions and high symbol rates require flexible but power-efficient receiver designs. This thesis investigates receiver algorithms and architectures that enable multi-gigabit mmWave communication. Using a system-level approach, the design options between low-power time-domain and power-hungry frequency-domain signal processing are explored. The system discussion is started with an analysis of the problem of parameter synchronization in mmWave systems and its impact on system design. The proposed synchronization architecture extends known synchronization techniques to provide greater flexibility regarding the operating environments and for system efficiency optimization. For frequency-selective environments, versatile single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) offers not only excellent channel equalization, but also the possibility to integrate additional baseband tasks without overhead. Hence, the high initial complexity of SC-FDE needs to be put in perspective to the complexity savings in the other parts of the baseband. Furthermore, an extension to the SC-FDE architecture is proposed that allows an adaptation of the equalization complexity by switching between a cyclic-prefix mode and a reduced block length overlap-save mode based on the delay spread. Approaching the problem of complexity adaptation from time-domain, a high-speed hardware architecture for the delayed decision feedback sequence estimation (DDFSE) algorithm is presented. DDFSE uses decision feedback to reduce the complexity of the sequence estimation and allows to set the system performance between the performance of full maximum-likelihood detection and pure decision feedback equalization. An implementation of the DDFSE architecture is demonstrated as part of an all-digital IEEE802.11ad baseband ASIC manufactured in 40nm CMOS. A flexible architecture for wideband mmWave receivers based on complex sub-sampling is presented. Complex sub-sampling combines the design advantages of sub-sampling receivers with the flexibility of direct-conversion receivers using a single passive component and a digital compensation scheme. Feasibility of the architecture is proven with a 16Gb/s hardware demonstrator. The demonstrator is used to explore the potential gain of non-equidistant constellations for high-throughput mmWave links. Specifically crafted amplitude phase-shift keying (APSK) modulation achieve 1dB average mutual information (AMI) advantage over quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) in simulation and on the testbed hardware. The AMI advantage of APSK can be leveraged for a practical transmission using Polar codes which are trained specifically for the constellation

Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric traits. Moreover, the biometric technology is being used in novel ways, with potential commercial and practical implications to our daily activities. The key objective of the book is to provide a collection of comprehensive references on some recent theoretical development as well as novel applications in biometrics. The topics covered in this book reflect well both aspects of development. They include biometric sample quality, privacy preserving and cancellable biometrics, contactless biometrics, novel and unconventional biometrics, and the technical challenges in implementing the technology in portable devices. The book consists of 15 chapters. It is divided into four sections, namely, biometric applications on mobile platforms, cancelable biometrics, biometric encryption, and other applications.     The problem of automatically generating hardware modules from high level application representations has been at the forefront of EDA research during the last few years. In this Dissertation we introduce a methodology to automatically synthesize hardware accelerators from OpenCL applications. OpenCL is a recent industry supported standard for writing programs that execute on multicore platforms and accelerators such as GPUs. Our methodology maps OpenCL kernels into hardware accelerators based on architectural templates that explicitly decouple computation from memory communication whenever this is possible. The templates can be tuned to provide a wide repertoire of accelerators that meet user performance requirements and FPGA device characteristics. Furthermore a set of high- and low-level compiler optimizations is applied to generate optimized accelerators. Our experimental evaluation shows that the generated accelerators are tuned efficiently to match the applications memory access pattern and computational complexity and to achieve user performance requirements. An important objective of our tool is to expand the FPGA development user base to software engineers thereby expanding the scope of FPGAs beyond the realm of hardware design.To πρόβλημα της αυτόματης δημιουργίας μονάδων υλικό από παραστάσεις υψηλού επιπέδου εφαρμογής είναι στην πρώτη γραμμή της EDA έρευνας κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων ετών. Σε αυτή την διατριβή παρουσιάζουμε μια μεθοδολογία για τη αυτόματη σύνθεση επιταχυντές υλικού από εφαρμογές OpenCL. OpenCL είναι ένα πρόσφατο πρότυπο για τη σύνταξη των προγραμμάτων που εκτελούνται σε πλατφόρμες πολλαπλών πυρήνων και επιταχυντές όπως GPUs. Η μεθοδολογία μας μετατρέπει προγράμματα OpenCL σε επιταχυντές υλικού με βάση αρχιτεκτονικά πρότυπα που ρητά αποσυνδέει τους υπολογισμούς από την μεταφορά δεδομένων από/προς την μνήμη όποτε αυτό είναι δυνατό. Τα πρότυπα μπορούν να συντονιστούν ώστε να παρέχουν ένα ευρύ ρεπερτόριο από επιταχυντές που πληρούν τις απαιτήσεις απόδοσης των χρηστών και τα χαρακτηριστικά της συσκευής FPGA. Επιπλέον ένα σύνολο υψηλής και χαμηλής στάθμης βελτιστοποιήσεις μεταγλωττιστή εφαρμόζεται για να παράγει βελτιστοποιημένα επιταχυντές. Η πειραματική αξιολόγηση δείχνει ότι οι επιταχυντές που δημιουργούνται αποτελεσματικά συντονισμένοι για να ταιριάζει με το μοτίβο πρόσβασης στην μνήμη κάθε εφαρμογής και την υπολογιστική πολυπλοκότητα και να επιτύχουν τις απαιτήσεις απόδοσης των χρηστών.     Approximate and timing-speculative hardware design for high-performance and energy-efficient video processing

    Since the end of transistor scaling in 2-D appeared on the horizon, innovative circuit design paradigms have been on the rise to go beyond the well-established and ultraconservative exact computing. Many compute-intensive applications – such as video processing – exhibit an intrinsic error resilience and do not necessarily require perfect accuracy in their numerical operations. Approximate computing (AxC) is emerging as a design alternative to improve the performance and energy-efficiency requirements for many applications by trading its intrinsic error tolerance with algorithm and circuit efficiency. Exact computing also imposes a worst-case timing to the conventional design of hardware accelerators to ensure reliability, leading to an efficiency loss. Conversely, the timing-speculative (TS) hardware design paradigm allows increasing the frequency or decreasing the voltage beyond the limits determined by static timing analysis (STA), thereby narrowing pessimistic safety margins that conventional design methods implement to prevent hardware timing errors. Timing errors should be evaluated by an accurate gate-level simulation, but a significant gap remains: How these timing errors propagate from the underlying hardware all the way up to the entire algorithm behavior, where they just may degrade the performance and quality of service of the application at stake? This thesis tackles this issue by developing and demonstrating a cross-layer framework capable of performing investigations of both AxC (i.e., from approximate arithmetic operators, approximate synthesis, gate-level pruning) and TS hardware design (i.e., from voltage over-scaling, frequency over-clocking, temperature rising, and device aging). The cross-layer framework can simulate both timing errors and logic errors at the gate-level by crossing them dynamically, linking the hardware result with the algorithm-level, and vice versa during the evolution of the application’s runtime. Existing frameworks perform investigations of AxC and TS techniques at circuit-level (i.e., at the output of the accelerator) agnostic to the ultimate impact at the application level (i.e., where the impact is truly manifested), leading to less optimization. Unlike state of the art, the framework proposed offers a holistic approach to assessing the tradeoff of AxC and TS techniques at the application-level. This framework maximizes energy efficiency and performance by identifying the maximum approximation levels at the application level to fulfill the required good enough quality. This thesis evaluates the framework with an 8-way SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) hardware accelerator operating into an HEVC encoder as a case study. Application-level results showed that the SAD based on the approximate adders achieve savings of up to 45% of energy/operation with an increase of only 1.9% in BD-BR. On the other hand, VOS (Voltage Over-Scaling) applied to the SAD generates savings of up to 16.5% in energy/operation with around 6% of increase in BD-BR. The framework also reveals that the boost of about 6.96% (at 50°) to 17.41% (at 75° with 10- Y aging) in the maximum clock frequency achieved with TS hardware design is totally lost by the processing overhead from 8.06% to 46.96% when choosing an unreliable algorithm to the blocking match algorithm (BMA). We also show that the overhead can be avoided by adopting a reliable BMA. This thesis also shows approximate DTT (Discrete Tchebichef Transform) hardware proposals by exploring a transform matrix approximation, truncation and pruning. The results show that the approximate DTT hardware proposal increases the maximum frequency up to 64%, minimizes the circuit area in up to 43.6%, and saves up to 65.4% in power dissipation. The DTT proposal mapped for FPGA shows an increase of up to 58.9% on the maximum frequency and savings of about 28.7% and 32.2% on slices and dynamic power, respectively compared with stat

    Learning Object Recognition and Object Class Segmentation with Deep Neural Networks on GPU

    As cameras are becoming ubiquitous and internet storage abundant, the need for computers to understand images is growing rapidly. This thesis is concerned with two computer vision tasks, recognizing objects and their location, and segmenting images according to object classes. We focus on deep learning approaches, which in recent years had a tremendous influence on machine learning in general and computer vision in particular. The thesis presents our research into deep learning models and algorithms. It is divided into three parts. The first part describes our GPU deep learning framework. Its hierarchical structure allows transparent use of GPU, facilitates specification of complex models, model inspection, and constitutes the implementation basis of the later chapters. Components of this framework were used in a real-time GPU library for random forests, which we present and evaluate. In the second part, we investigate greedy learning techniques for semi-supervised object recognition. We improve the feature learning capabilities of restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM) with lateral interactions and auto-encoders with additional hidden layers, and offer empirical insight into the evaluation of RBM learning algorithms. The third part of this thesis focuses on object class segmentation. Here, we incrementally introduce novel neural network models and training algorithms, successively improving the state of the art on multiple datasets. Our novel methods include supervised pre-training, histogram of oriented gradient DNN inputs, depth normalization and recurrence. All contribute towards improving segmentation performance beyond what is possible with competitive baseline methods. We further demonstrate that pixelwise labeling combined with a structured loss function can be utilized to localize objects. Finally, we show how transfer learning in combination with object-centered depth colorization can be used to identify objects. We evaluate our proposed methods on the publicly available MNIST, MSRC, INRIA Graz-02, NYU-Depth, Pascal VOC, and Washington RGB-D Objects datasets.Allgegenwärtige Kameras und preiswerter Internetspeicher erzeugen einen großen Bedarf an Algorithmen für maschinelles Sehen. Die vorliegende Dissertation adressiert zwei Teilbereiche dieses Forschungsfeldes: Erkennung von Objekten und Objektklassensegmentierung. Der methodische Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Lernen von tiefen Modellen (”Deep Learning“). Diese haben in den vergangenen Jahren einen enormen Einfluss auf maschinelles Lernen allgemein und speziell maschinelles Sehen gewonnen. Dabei behandeln wir behandeln wir drei Themenfelder. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beschreibt ein GPU-basiertes Softwaresystem für Deep Learning. Dessen hierarchische Struktur erlaubt schnelle GPU-Berechnungen, einfache Spezifikation komplexer Modelle und interaktive Modellanalyse. Damit liefert es das Fundament für die folgenden Kapitel. Teile des Systems finden Verwendung in einer Echtzeit-GPU-Bibliothek für Random Forests, die wir ebenfalls vorstellen und evaluieren. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit beleuchtet Greedy-Lernalgorithmen für halb überwachtes Lernen. Hier werden hierarchische Modelle schrittweise aus Modulen wie Autokodierern oder restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM ) aufgebaut. Wir verbessern die Repräsentationsfähigkeiten von RBM auf Bildern durch Einführung lokaler und lateraler Verknüpfungen und liefern empirische Erkenntnisse zur Bewertung von RBM-Lernalgorithmen. Wir zeigen zudem, dass die in Autokodierern verwendeten einschichtigen Kodierer komplexe Zusammenhänge ihrer Eingaben nicht erkennen können und schlagen stattdessen einen hybriden Kodierer vor, der sowohl komplexe Zusammenhänge erkennen, als auch weiterhin einfache Zusammenhänge einfach repräsentieren kann. Im dritten Teil der Arbeit stellen wir neue neuronale Netzarchitekturen und Trainingsmethoden für die Objektklassensegmentierung vor. Wir zeigen, dass neuronale Netze mit überwachtem Vortrainieren, wiederverwendeten Ausgaben und Histogrammen Orientierter Gradienten (HOG) als Eingabe den aktuellen Stand der Technik auf mehreren RGB-Datenmengen erreichen können. Anschließend erweitern wir unsere Methoden in zwei Dimensionen, sodass sie mit Tiefendaten (RGB-D) und Videos verarbeiten können. Dazu führen wir zunächst Tiefennormalisierung für Objektklassensegmentierung ein um die Skala zu fixieren, und erlauben expliziten Zugriff auf die Höhe in einem Bildausschnitt. Schließlich stellen wir ein rekurrentes konvolutionales neuronales Netz vor, das einen großen räumlichen Kontext einbezieht, hochaufgelöste Ausgaben produziert und Videosequenzen verarbeiten kann. Dadurch verbessert sich die Bildsegmentierung relativ zu vergleichbaren Methoden, etwa auf der Basis von Random Forests oder CRF . Wir zeigen dann, dass pixelbasierte Ausgaben in neuronalen Netzen auch benutzt werden können um die Position von Objekten zu detektieren. Dazu kombinieren wir Techniken des strukturierten Lernens mit Konvolutionsnetzen. Schließlich schlagen wir eine objektzentrierte Einfärbungsmethode vor, die es ermöglicht auf RGB-Bildern trainierte neuronale Netze auf RGB-D-Bildern einzusetzen. Dieser Transferlernansatz erlaubt es uns auch mit stark reduzierten Trainingsmengen noch bessere Ergebnisse beim Schätzen von Objektklassen, -instanzen und -orientierungen zu erzielen. Wir werten die von uns vorgeschlagenen Methoden auf den öffentlich zugänglichen MNIST, MSRC, INRIA Graz-02, NYU-Depth, Pascal VOC, und Washington RGB-D Objects Datenmengen aus

    Algorithm-Architecture Co-Design for Digital Front-Ends in Mobile Receivers

    The methodology behind this work has been to use the concept of algorithm-hardware co-design to achieve efficient solutions related to the digital front-end in mobile receivers. It has been shown that, by looking at algorithms and hardware architectures together, more efficient solutions can be found; i.e., efficient with respect to some design measure. In this thesis the main focus have been placed on two such parameters; first reduced complexity algorithms to lower energy consumptions at limited performance degradation, secondly to handle the increasing number of wireless standards that preferably should run on the same hardware platform. To be able to perform this task it is crucial to understand both sides of the table, i.e., both algorithms and concepts for wireless communication as well as the implications arising on the hardware architecture. It is easier to handle the high complexity by separating those disciplines in a way of layered abstraction. However, this representation is imperfect, since many interconnected "details" belonging to different layers are lost in the attempt of handling the complexity. This results in poor implementations and the design of mobile terminals is no exception. Wireless communication standards are often designed based on mathematical algorithms with theoretical boundaries, with few considerations to actual implementation constraints such as, energy consumption, silicon area, etc. This thesis does not try to remove the layer abstraction model, given its undeniable advantages, but rather uses those cross-layer "details" that went missing during the abstraction. This is done in three manners: In the first part, the cross-layer optimization is carried out from the algorithm perspective. Important circuit design parameters, such as quantization are taken into consideration when designing the algorithm for OFDM symbol timing, CFO, and SNR estimation with a single bit, namely, the Sign-Bit. Proof-of-concept circuits were fabricated and showed high potential for low-end receivers. In the second part, the cross-layer optimization is accomplished from the opposite side, i.e., the hardware-architectural side. A SDR architecture is known for its flexibility and scalability over many applications. In this work a filtering application is mapped into software instructions in the SDR architecture in order to make filtering-specific modules redundant, and thus, save silicon area. In the third and last part, the optimization is done from an intermediate point within the algorithm-architecture spectrum. Here, a heterogeneous architecture with a combination of highly efficient and highly flexible modules is used to accomplish initial synchronization in at least two concurrent OFDM standards.
