    Load dispatch optimization of open cycle industrial gas turbine plant incorporating operational, maintenance and environmental parameters

    Power generation fuel cost, unit availability and environmental rules and regulations are important parameters in power generation load dispatch optimization. Previous optimization work has not considered the later two in their formulations. The objective of this work is to develop a multi-objective optimization model and optimization algorithm for load dispatching optimization of open cycle gas turbine plant that not only consider operational parameters, but also incorporates maintenance and environmental parameters. Gas turbine performance parameters with reference to ASME PTC 22-1985 were developed and validated against an installed performance monitoring system (PMS9000) and plant performance test report. A gas turbine input-output model and emission were defined mathematically into the optimization multi-objectives function. Maintenance parameters of Equivalent Operating Hours (EOH) constraints and environmental parameters of allowable emission (NOx, CO and SO2) limits constraints were also included. The Extended Priority List and Particle Swarm Optimization (EPL-PSO) method was successfully implemented to solve the model. Four simulation tests were conducted to study and test the develop optimization software. Simulation results successfully demonstrated that multi-objectives total production cost (TPC) objective functions, the proposed EOH constraint, emissions model and constraints algorithm could be incorporated into the EPL-PSO method which provided optimum results, without violating any of the constraints as defined. A cost saving of 0.685% and 0.1157% could be obtained based on simulations conducted on actual plant condition and against benchmark problem respectively. The results of this work can be used for actual plant application and future development work for new gas turbine model or to include additional operational constraint

    A hierarchical Mamdani-type fuzzy modelling approach with new training data selection and multi-objective optimisation mechanisms: A special application for the prediction of mechanical properties of alloy steels

    In this paper, a systematic data-driven fuzzy modelling methodology is proposed, which allows to construct Mamdani fuzzy models considering both accuracy (precision) and transparency (interpretability) of fuzzy systems. The new methodology employs a fast hierarchical clustering algorithm to generate an initial fuzzy model efficiently; a training data selection mechanism is developed to identify appropriate and efficient data as learning samples; a high-performance Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) based multi-objective optimisation mechanism is developed to further improve the fuzzy model in terms of both the structure and the parameters; and a new tolerance analysis method is proposed to derive the confidence bands relating to the final elicited models. This proposed modelling approach is evaluated using two benchmark problems and is shown to outperform other modelling approaches. Furthermore, the proposed approach is successfully applied to complex high-dimensional modelling problems for manufacturing of alloy steels, using ‘real’ industrial data. These problems concern the prediction of the mechanical properties of alloy steels by correlating them with the heat treatment process conditions as well as the weight percentages of the chemical compositions

    Multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm for integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing

    In assembly optimisation, assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing have been extensively studied because both activities are directly linked with assembly efficiency that influences the final assembly costs. Both activities are categorised as NP-hard and usually performed separately. Assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing optimisation presents a good opportunity to be integrated, considering the benefits such as larger search space that leads to better solution quality, reduces error rate in planning and speeds up time-to-market for a product. In order to optimise an integrated assembly sequence planning and assembly line balancing, this work proposes a multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm that used discrete procedures to update its position and velocity in finding Pareto optimal solution. A computational experiment with 51 test problems at different difficulty levels was used to test the multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation performance compared with the existing algorithms. A statistical test of the algorithm performance indicates that the proposed multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimisation algorithm presents significant improvement in terms of the quality of the solution set towards the Pareto optimal set

    State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods

    Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners

    Application of a new multi-agent Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation methodology in ship design

    In this paper, a multiple objective 'Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation' methodology (HCPSO) is proposed. This methodology is able to handle multiple objective optimisation problems in the area of ship design, where the simultaneous optimisation of several conflicting objectives is considered. The proposed method is a hybrid technique that merges the features of co-evolution and Nash equilibrium with a ε-disturbance technique to eliminate the stagnation. The method also offers a way to identify an efficient set of Pareto (conflicting) designs and to select a preferred solution amongst these designs. The combination of co-evolution approach and Nash-optima contributes to HCPSO by utilising faster search and evolution characteristics. The design search is performed within a multi-agent design framework to facilitate distributed synchronous cooperation. The most widely used test functions from the formal literature of multiple objectives optimisation are utilised to test the HCPSO. In addition, a real case study, the internal subdivision problem of a ROPAX vessel, is provided to exemplify the applicability of the developed method
