    Localisation of mobile nodes in wireless networks with correlated in time measurement noise.

    Wireless sensor networks are an inherent part of decision making, object tracking and location awareness systems. This work is focused on simultaneous localisation of mobile nodes based on received signal strength indicators (RSSIs) with correlated in time measurement noises. Two approaches to deal with the correlated measurement noises are proposed in the framework of auxiliary particle filtering: with a noise augmented state vector and the second approach implements noise decorrelation. The performance of the two proposed multi model auxiliary particle filters (MM AUX-PFs) is validated over simulated and real RSSIs and high localisation accuracy is demonstrated

    Multi-level Gated Bayesian Recurrent Neural Network for State Estimation

    The optimality of Bayesian filtering relies on the completeness of prior models, while deep learning holds a distinct advantage in learning models from offline data. Nevertheless, the current fusion of these two methodologies remains largely ad hoc, lacking a theoretical foundation. This paper presents a novel solution, namely a multi-level gated Bayesian recurrent neural network specifically designed to state estimation under model mismatches. Firstly, we transform the non-Markov state-space model into an equivalent first-order Markov model with memory. It is a generalized transformation that overcomes the limitations of the first-order Markov property and enables recursive filtering. Secondly, by deriving a data-assisted joint state-memory-mismatch Bayesian filtering, we design a Bayesian multi-level gated framework that includes a memory update gate for capturing the temporal regularities in state evolution, a state prediction gate with the evolution mismatch compensation, and a state update gate with the observation mismatch compensation. The Gaussian approximation implementation of the filtering process within the gated framework is derived, taking into account the computational efficiency. Finally, the corresponding internal neural network structures and end-to-end training methods are designed. The Bayesian filtering theory enhances the interpretability of the proposed gated network, enabling the effective integration of offline data and prior models within functionally explicit gated units. In comprehensive experiments, including simulations and real-world datasets, the proposed gated network demonstrates superior estimation performance compared to benchmark filters and state-of-the-art deep learning filtering methods

    Context Exploitation in Data Fusion

    Complex and dynamic environments constitute a challenge for existing tracking algorithms. For this reason, modern solutions are trying to utilize any available information which could help to constrain, improve or explain the measurements. So called Context Information (CI) is understood as information that surrounds an element of interest, whose knowledge may help understanding the (estimated) situation and also in reacting to that situation. However, context discovery and exploitation are still largely unexplored research topics. Until now, the context has been extensively exploited as a parameter in system and measurement models which led to the development of numerous approaches for the linear or non-linear constrained estimation and target tracking. More specifically, the spatial or static context is the most common source of the ambient information, i.e. features, utilized for recursive enhancement of the state variables either in the prediction or the measurement update of the filters. In the case of multiple model estimators, context can not only be related to the state but also to a certain mode of the filter. Common practice for multiple model scenarios is to represent states and context as a joint distribution of Gaussian mixtures. These approaches are commonly referred as the join tracking and classification. Alternatively, the usefulness of context was also demonstrated in aiding the measurement data association. Process of formulating a hypothesis, which assigns a particular measurement to the track, is traditionally governed by the empirical knowledge of the noise characteristics of sensors and operating environment, i.e. probability of detection, false alarm, clutter noise, which can be further enhanced by conditioning on context. We believe that interactions between the environment and the object could be classified into actions, activities and intents, and formed into structured graphs with contextual links translated into arcs. By learning the environment model we will be able to make prediction on the target\u2019s future actions based on its past observation. Probability of target future action could be utilized in the fusion process to adjust tracker confidence on measurements. By incorporating contextual knowledge of the environment, in the form of a likelihood function, in the filter measurement update step, we have been able to reduce uncertainties of the tracking solution and improve the consistency of the track. The promising results demonstrate that the fusion of CI brings a significant performance improvement in comparison to the regular tracking approaches

    Predictive smart relaying schemes for decentralized wireless systems

    Recent developments in decentralized wireless networks make the technology potentially deployable in an extremely broad scenarios and applications. These include mobile Internet of Things (IoT) networks, smart cities, future innovative communication systems with multiple aerial layer flying network platforms and other advanced mobile communication networks. The approach also could be the solution for traditional operated mobile network backup plans, balancing traffic flow, emergency communication systems and so on. This thesis reveals and addresses several issues and challenges in conventional wireless communication systems, particular for the cases where there is a lack of resources and the disconnection of radio links. There are two message routing plans in the data packet store, carry and forwarding form are proposed, known as KaFiR and PaFiR. These employ the Bayesian filtering approach to track and predict the motion of surrounding portable devices and determine the next layer among candidate nodes. The relaying strategies endow smart devices with the intelligent capability to optimize the message routing path and improve the overall network performance with respect to resilience, tolerance and scalability. The simulation and test results present that the KaFiR routing protocol performs well when network subscribers are less mobile and the relaying protocol can be deployed on a wide range of portable terminals as the algorithm is rather simple to operate. The PaFiR routing strategy takes advantages of the Particle Filter algorithm, which can cope with complex network scenarios and applications, particularly when unmanned aerial vehicles are involved as the assisted intermediate layers. When compared with other existing DTN routing protocols and some of the latest relaying plans, both relaying protocols deliver an excellent overall performance for the key wireless communication network evolution metrics, which shows the promising future for this brand new research direction. Further extension work directions based on the tracking and prediction methods are suggested and reviewed. Future work on some new applications and services are also addressed

    Machine Learning-Aided Operations and Communications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Contemporary Survey

    The ongoing amalgamation of UAV and ML techniques is creating a significant synergy and empowering UAVs with unprecedented intelligence and autonomy. This survey aims to provide a timely and comprehensive overview of ML techniques used in UAV operations and communications and identify the potential growth areas and research gaps. We emphasise the four key components of UAV operations and communications to which ML can significantly contribute, namely, perception and feature extraction, feature interpretation and regeneration, trajectory and mission planning, and aerodynamic control and operation. We classify the latest popular ML tools based on their applications to the four components and conduct gap analyses. This survey also takes a step forward by pointing out significant challenges in the upcoming realm of ML-aided automated UAV operations and communications. It is revealed that different ML techniques dominate the applications to the four key modules of UAV operations and communications. While there is an increasing trend of cross-module designs, little effort has been devoted to an end-to-end ML framework, from perception and feature extraction to aerodynamic control and operation. It is also unveiled that the reliability and trust of ML in UAV operations and applications require significant attention before full automation of UAVs and potential cooperation between UAVs and humans come to fruition.Comment: 36 pages, 304 references, 19 Figure

    Big Data decision support system

    Includes bibliographical references.2022 Fall.Each day, the amount of data produced by sensors, social and digital media, and Internet of Things is rapidly increasing. The volume of digital data is expected to be doubled within the next three years. At some point, it might not be financially feasible to store all the data that is received. Hence, if data is not analyzed as it is received, the information collected could be lost forever. Actionable Intelligence is the next level of Big Data analysis where data is being used for decision making. This thesis document describes my scientific contribution to Big Data Actionable Intelligence generations. Chapter 1 consists of my colleagues and I's contribution in Big Data Actionable Intelligence Architecture. The proven architecture has demonstrated to support real-time actionable intelligence generation using disparate data sources (e.g., social media, satellite, newsfeeds). This work has been published in the Journal of Big Data. Chapter 2 shows my original method to perform real-time detection of moving targets using Remote Sensing Big Data. This work has also been published in the Journal of Big Data and it has received an issuance of a U.S. patent. As the Field-of-View (FOV) in remote sensing continues to expand, the number of targets observed by each sensor continues to increase. The ability to track large quantities of targets in real-time poses a significant challenge. Chapter 3 describes my colleague and I's contribution to the multi-target tracking domain. We have demonstrated that we can overcome real-time tracking challenges when there are large number of targets. Our work was published in the Journal of Sensors
