    QoE-centric management of multimedia networks through cooperative control loops

    The Internet has evolved from a service to transport simple text files into a platform for transporting a variety of complex multimedia services. The initial centralized management systems were not designed and are therefore not able to perform efficient management of Quality of Experience (QoE) for these complex services. Deploying an autonomic management system resolves these complexity issues and allows efficient resource allocation based on the service type, end-user requirements and device characteristics. However, existing autonomic management systems only allow limited cooperation between different autonomic elements (AE), which limits their capabilities to provide end-to-end QoE assurance. This research will therefore design cooperative AEs, optimize their organization and provide cooperative allocation algorithms to optimize end-to-end QoE

    Towards SVC-based adaptive streaming in information centric networks

    HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is becoming the de-facto standard for video streaming services. In HAS, each video is segmented and stored in different qualities. The client can dynamically select the most appropriate quality level to download, allowing it to adapt to varying network conditions. As the Internet was not designed to deliver such applications, optimal support for multimedia delivery is still missing. Information Centric Networking (ICN) is a recently proposed disruptive architecture that could solve this issue, where the focus is given to the content rather than to end-to-end connectivity. Due to the bandwidth unpredictability typical of ICN, standard AVC-based HAS performs quality selection sub-optimally, thus leading to a poor Quality of Experience (QoE). In this article, we propose to overcome this inefficiency by using Scalable Video Coding (SVC) instead. We individuate the main advantages of SVC-based HAS over ICN and outline, both theoretically and via simulation, the research challenges to be addressed to optimize the delivered QoE

    Minimizing the impact of delay on live SVC-based HTTP adaptive streaming services

    HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is becoming the de-facto standard for Over-The-Top video streaming services. Video content is temporally split into segments which are offered at multiple qualities to the clients. These clients autonomously select the quality layer matching the current state of the network through a quality selection heuristic. Recently, academia and industry have begun evaluating the feasibility of adopting layered video coding for HAS. Instead of downloading one file for a certain quality level, scalable video streaming requires downloading several interdependent layers to obtain the same quality. This implies that the base layer is always downloaded and is available for playout, even when throughput fluctuates and enhancement layers can not be downloaded in time. This layered video approach can help in providing better service quality assurance for video streaming. However, adopting scalable video coding for HAS also leads to other issues, since requesting multiple files over HTTP leads to an increased impact of the end-to-end delay and thus on the service provided to the client. This is even worse in a Live TV scenario where the drift on the live signal should be minimized, requiring smaller segment and buffer sizes. In this paper, we characterize the impact of delay on several measurement-based heuristics. Furthermore, we propose several ways to overcome the end-to-end delay issues, such as parallel and pipelined downloading of segment layers, to provide a higher quality for the video service

    In-network quality optimization for adaptive video streaming services

    HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) services allow the quality of streaming video to be automatically adapted by the client application in face of network and device dynamics. Due to their advantages compared to traditional techniques, HAS-based protocols are widely used for over-the-top (OTT) video streaming. However, they are yet to be adopted in managed environments, such as ISP networks. A major obstacle is the purely client-driven design of current HAS approaches, which leads to excessive quality oscillations, suboptimal behavior, and the inability to enforce management policies. Moreover, the provider has no control over the quality that is provided, which is essential when offering a managed service. This article tackles these challenges and facilitates the adoption of HAS in managed networks. Specifically, several centralized and distributed algorithms and heuristics are proposed that allow nodes inside the network to steer the HAS client's quality selection process. The algorithms are able to enforce management policies by limiting the set of available qualities for specific clients. Additionally, simulation results show that by coordinating the quality selection process across multiple clients, the proposed algorithms significantly reduce quality oscillations by a factor of five and increase the average delivered video quality by at least 14%

    Quality of Service improvements for real time multimedia applications using next generation network architectures and blockchain in Internet Service Provider cooperative scenario

    Real time communications are becoming part of our daily life, requiring constrained requisites with the purpose of being enjoyed in harmony by end users. The factors ruling these requisites are Quality of Service parameters of the users' Internet connections. Achieving a satisfactory QoS level for real time communications depends on parameters that are strongly influenced by the quality of the network connections among the Internet Service Providers, which are located in the path between final users and Over The Top service providers that are supplying them with real time services. Final users can be: business people having real time videoconferences, or adopting crytpocurrencies in their exchanges, videogamers playing online games together with others residing in other countries, migrants talking with their relatives or watching their children growing up in their home countries, people with disabilities adopting tecnologies to help them, doctors performing remote surgeries, manufacturers adopting augmented reality devices to perform dangerous tasks. Each of them performing their daily activities are requiring specific QoS parameters to their ISPs, that nowadays seem to be unable to provide them with a satisfactory QoS level for these kinds of real time services. Through the adoption of next generation networks, such as the Information Centric Networking, it would be possible to overcome the QoS problems that nowadays are experienced. By adopting Blockchain technologies, in several use cases, it would be possible to improve those security aspects related to the non-temperability of information and privacy. I started this thesis analyzing next generation architectures enabling real time multimedia communications. In Software Defined Networking, Named Data Networking and Community Information Centric Networking, I highlighted potential approaches to solve QoS problems that are affecting real time multimedia applications. During my experiments I found that applications able to transmit high quality videos, such as 4k or 8k videos, or to directly interact with devices AR/VR enabled are missing for both ICN approaches. Then I proposed a REST interface for the enforcing of a specific QoS parameter, the round trip time (RTT) taking into consideration the specific use case of a game company that connects with the same telecommunication company of the final user. Supposing that the proposed REST APIs have been deployed in the game company and in the ISP, when one or more users are experiencing lag, the game company will try to ask the ISP to reduce the RTT for that specific user or that group of users. This request can be done by performing a call to a method where IP address(es) and the maximum RTT desired are passed. I also proposed other methods, through which it would be possible to retrieve information about the QoS parameters, and exchange, if necessary, an exceeding parameter in change of another one. The proposed REST APIs can also be used in more complex scenarios, where ISPs along the path are chained together, in order to improve the end to end QoS among Over The Top service provider and final users. To store the information exchanged by using the proposed REST APIs, I proposed to adopt a permissioned blockchain, analizying the ISPs cooperative use case with Hyperledger Fabric, where I proposed the adoption of the Proof of Authority consensus algorithm, to increase the throughput in terms of transactions per second. In a specific case that I examined, I am proposing a combination of Information Centric Networking and Blockchain, in an architecture where ISPs are exchanging valuable information regarding final Users, to improve their QoS parameters. I also proposed my smart contract for the gaming delay use case, that can be used to rule the communication among those ISPs that are along the path among OTT and final users. An extension of this work can be done, by defining billing costs for the QoS improvements

    Multiuser Diversity Management for Multicast/Broadcast Services in 5G and Beyond Networks

    The envisaged fifth-generation (5G) and beyond networks represent a paradigm shift for global communications, offering unprecedented breakthroughs in media service delivery with novel capabilities and use cases. Addressing the critical research verticals and challenges that characterize the International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2030 framework requires a compelling mix of enabling radio access technologies (RAT) and native softwarized, disaggregated, and intelligent radio access network (RAN) conceptions. In such a context, the multicast/broadcast ser vice (MBS) capability is an appealing feature to address the ever-growing traffic demands, disruptive multimedia services, massive connectivity, and low-latency applications. Embracing the MBS capability as a primary component of the envisaged 5G and beyond networks comes with multiple open challenges. In this research, we contextualize and address the necessity of ensuring stringent quality of service (QoS)/quality of experience (QoE) requirements, multicasting over millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sub-Terahertz (THz) frequencies, and handling complex mobility behaviors. In the broad problem space around these three significant challenges, we focus on the specific research problems of effectively handling the trade-off between multicasting gain and multiuser diversity, along with the trade-off between optimal network performance and computational complexity. In this research, we cover essential aspects at the intersection of MBS, radio resource management (RRM), machine learning (ML), and the Open RAN (O-RAN) framework. We characterize and address the dynamic multicast multiuser diversity through low-complexity RRM solutions aided by ML, orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques in 5G MBS and beyond networks. We characterize the performance of the multicast access techniques conventional multicast scheme (CMS), subgrouping based on OMA (S-OMA), and subgrouping based on NOMA (S-NOMA). We provide conditions for their adequate selection regarding the specific network conditions (Chapter 4). Consequently, we propose heuristic methods for the dynamic multicast access technique selection and resource allocation, taking advantage of the multiuser diversity (Chapter 5.1). Moreover, we proposed a multicasting strategy based on fixed pre-computed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multi-beams and S-NOMA (Chapter 5.2). Our approach tackles specific throughput requirements for enabling extended reality (XR) applications attending multiple users and handling their spatial and channel quality diversity. We address the computational complexity (CC) associated with the dynamic multicast RRM strategies and highlight the implications of fast variations in the reception conditions of the multicast group (MG) members. We propose a low complexity ML-based solution structured by a multicast-oriented trigger to avoid overrunning the algorithm, a K-Means clustering for group-oriented detection and splitting, and a classifier for selecting the most suitable multicast access technique (Chapter 6.1). Our proposed approaches allow addressing the trade-off between optimal network performance and CC by maximizing specific QoS parameters through non-optimal solutions, considerably reducing the CC of conventional exhaustive mechanisms. Moreover, we discuss the insertion of ML-based multicasting RRM solutions into the envisioned disaggregated O-RAN framework (Chapter 6.2.5). We analyze specific MBS tasks and the importance of a native decentralized, softwarized, and intelligent conception. We assess the effectiveness of our proposal under multiple numerical and link level simulations of recreated 5G MBS use cases operating in μWave and mmWave. We evaluate various network conditions, service constraints, and users’ mobility behaviors

    QoE-Centric Control and Management of Multimedia Services in Software Defined and Virtualized Networks

    Multimedia services consumption has increased tremendously since the deployment of 4G/LTE networks. Mobile video services (e.g., YouTube and Mobile TV) on smart devices are expected to continue to grow with the emergence and evolution of future networks such as 5G. The end user’s demand for services with better quality from service providers has triggered a trend towards Quality of Experience (QoE) - centric network management through efficient utilization of network resources. However, existing network technologies are either unable to adapt to diverse changing network conditions or limited in available resources. This has posed challenges to service providers for provisioning of QoE-centric multimedia services. New networking solutions such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can provide better solutions in terms of QoE control and management of multimedia services in emerging and future networks. The features of SDN, such as adaptability, programmability and cost-effectiveness make it suitable for bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications such as live video streaming, 3D/HD video and video gaming. However, the delivery of multimedia services over SDN/NFV networks to achieve optimized QoE, and the overall QoE-centric network resource management remain an open question especially in the advent development of future softwarized networks. The work in this thesis intends to investigate, design and develop novel approaches for QoE-centric control and management of multimedia services (with a focus on video streaming services) over software defined and virtualized networks. First, a video quality management scheme based on the traffic intensity under Dynamic Adaptive Video Streaming over HTTP (DASH) using SDN is developed. The proposed scheme can mitigate virtual port queue congestion which may cause buffering or stalling events during video streaming, thus, reducing the video quality. A QoE-driven resource allocation mechanism is designed and developed for improving the end user’s QoE for video streaming services. The aim of this approach is to find the best combination of network node functions that can provide an optimized QoE level to end-users through network node cooperation. Furthermore, a novel QoE-centric management scheme is proposed and developed, which utilizes Multipath TCP (MPTCP) and Segment Routing (SR) to enhance QoE for video streaming services over SDN/NFV-based networks. The goal of this strategy is to enable service providers to route network traffic through multiple disjointed bandwidth-satisfying paths and meet specific service QoE guarantees to the end-users. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed schemes in this work improve the video quality significantly compared with the state-of-the- art approaches. The thesis further proposes the path protections and link failure-free MPTCP/SR-based architecture that increases survivability, resilience, availability and robustness of future networks. The proposed path protection and dynamic link recovery scheme achieves a minimum time to recover from a failed link and avoids link congestion in softwarized networks

    Towards Broadcasting Linear Content Over 5G Network

    Today's society heavily relies on linear television systems featuring planned programs, which serve as a vital means of communication. The evolution of broadcasting linear content is notably driven by advancements in end users' devices. This transition has expanded it from a limited range of linear radio and TV channels to a comprehensive and distinctive array. This selection is accessible across diverse distribution network types. Among these networks, the prominence of the 5G network stands out as a notable platform for media and transmissions. Transmitting linear content over 5G networks involves efficiently delivering scheduled, real-time content to a large number of users simultaneously. This content encompasses live TV broadcasts, radio programs, and streaming events. While 5G networks offer significant advantages in capacity, speed, and latency, it's essential to consider specific factors when it comes to broadcasting linear content. Traditionally, cellular networks, designed for continuous service, have predominantly followed a unicast bidirectional communication paradigm for numerous years, providing a range of services to customers. This paper employs a research methodology to examine the future 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G Multicast and Broadcast Services (MBS) standards, along with their constraints. Our approach includes a comprehensive literature review, technical specification analysis, and comparison of different broadcasting technologies within the 5G framework. By employing this research methodology, we gain a holistic understanding of the evolving landscape of broadcasting linear content over 5G networks. This contributes to the body of knowledge in this field and informs future advancements in broadcast technologies within the 5G ecosystem

    EMB: Efficient Multimedia Broadcast in Multi-tier Mobile Networks

    Multimedia broadcast and multicast services (MBMS) in mobile networks has been widely addressed, however an investigation of such a technology in emerging, multi-tier, scenarios is still lacking. Notably, user clustering and resource allocation are extremely challenging in multi-tier networks, and imperative to maximize system capacity and improve quality of user-experience (QoE) in MBMS. Thus, in this paper we propose a clustering and resource allocation approach, named EMB, which specifically addresses heterogeneous networks and accounts for the fact that multimedia content is adaptively encoded into scalable layers depending on the QoE requirements and channel conditions of the heterogeneous users. Importantly, we prove that our clustering algorithm yields Pareto efficient broadcasting areas, multimedia encoding parameters, and re- source allocation, in a way that is also fair to the users. Fur- thermore, numerical results obtained under realistic conditions and using real-world video content, show that the proposed EMB results in lower churn count (i.e., higher number of served users), higher throughput, and increased QoE, while using fewer network resources
