Predictive intelligence to the edge through approximate collaborative context reasoning
We focus on Internet of Things (IoT) environments where a network of sensing and computing devices are responsible to locally process contextual data, reason and collaboratively infer the appearance of a specific phenomenon (event). Pushing processing and knowledge inference to the edge of the IoT network allows the complexity of the event reasoning process to be distributed into many manageable pieces and to be physically located at the source of the contextual information. This enables a huge amount of rich data streams to be processed in real time that would be prohibitively complex and costly to deliver on a traditional centralized Cloud system. We propose a lightweight, energy-efficient, distributed, adaptive, multiple-context perspective event reasoning model under uncertainty on each IoT device (sensor/actuator). Each device senses and processes context data and infers events based on different local context perspectives: (i) expert knowledge on event representation, (ii) outliers inference, and (iii) deviation from locally predicted context. Such novel approximate reasoning paradigm is achieved through a contextualized, collaborative belief-driven clustering process, where clusters of devices are formed according to their belief on the presence of events. Our distributed and federated intelligence model efficiently identifies any localized abnormality on the contextual data in light of event reasoning through aggregating local degrees of belief, updates, and adjusts its knowledge to contextual data outliers and novelty detection. We provide comprehensive experimental and comparison assessment of our model over real contextual data with other localized and centralized event detection models and show the benefits stemmed from its adoption by achieving up to three orders of magnitude less energy consumption and high quality of inference
The potential of additive manufacturing in the smart factory industrial 4.0: A review
Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing has introduced a novel production method in design, manufacturing, and distribution to end-users. This technology has provided great freedom in design for creating complex components, highly customizable products, and efficient waste minimization. The last industrial revolution, namely industry 4.0, employs the integration of smart manufacturing systems and developed information technologies. Accordingly, AM plays a principal role in industry 4.0 thanks to numerous benefits, such as time and material saving, rapid prototyping, high efficiency, and decentralized production methods. This review paper is to organize a comprehensive study on AM technology and present the latest achievements and industrial applications. Besides that, this paper investigates the sustainability dimensions of the AM process and the added values in economic, social, and environment sections. Finally, the paper concludes by pointing out the future trend of AM in technology, applications, and materials aspects that have the potential to come up with new ideas for the future of AM explorations
Cyber–Physical–Social Frameworks for Urban Big Data Systems: A Survey
The integration of things’ data on the Web and Web linking for things’ description and discovery is leading the way towards smart Cyber–Physical Systems (CPS). The data generated in CPS represents observations gathered by sensor devices about the ambient environment that can be manipulated by computational processes of the cyber world. Alongside this, the growing use of social networks offers near real-time citizen sensing capabilities as a complementary information source. The resulting Cyber–Physical–Social System (CPSS) can help to understand the real world and provide proactive services to users. The nature of CPSS data brings new requirements and challenges to different stages of data manipulation, including identification of data sources, processing and fusion of different types and scales of data. To gain an understanding of the existing methods and techniques which can be useful for a data-oriented CPSS implementation, this paper presents a survey of the existing research and commercial solutions. We define a conceptual framework for a data-oriented CPSS and detail the various solutions for building human–machine intelligence
Synergistic user ↔ context analytics
Various flavours of a new research field on (socio-)physical or personal analytics have emerged, with the goal of deriving semanticallyrich insights from people’s low-level physical sensing combined with their (online) social interactions. In this paper, we argue for more comprehensive data sources, including environmental and application-specific data, to better capture the interactions between users and their context, in addition to those among users. We provide some example use cases and present our ongoing work towards a synergistic analytics platform: a testbed based on mobile crowdsensing and IoT, a data model for representing the different sources of data and their connections, and a prediction engine for analyzing the data and producing insights
Novel holistic architecture for analytical operation on sensory data relayed as cloud services
With increasing adoption of the sensor-based application, there is an exponential rise of the sensory data that eventually take the shape of the big data. However, the practicality of executing high end analytical operation over the resource-constrained big data has never being studied closely. After reviewing existing approaches, it is explored that there is no cost effective schemes of big data analytics over large scale sensory data processiing that can be directly used as a service. Therefore, the propsoed system introduces a holistic architecture where streamed data after performing extraction of knowedge can be offered in the form of services. Implemented in MATLAB, the proposed study uses a very simplistic approach considering energy constrained of the sensor nodes to find that proposed system offers better accuracy, reduced mining duration (i.e. faster response time), and reduced memory dependencies to prove that it offers cost effective analytical solution in contrast to existing system
Data science applications to connected vehicles: Key barriers to overcome
The connected vehicles will generate huge amount of pervasive and real time data, at very high frequencies. This poses new challenges for Data science. How to analyse these data and how to address short-term and long-term storage are some of the key barriers to overcome.JRC.C.6-Economics of Climate Change, Energy and Transpor
Fame for sale: efficient detection of fake Twitter followers
are those Twitter accounts specifically created to
inflate the number of followers of a target account. Fake followers are
dangerous for the social platform and beyond, since they may alter concepts
like popularity and influence in the Twittersphere - hence impacting on
economy, politics, and society. In this paper, we contribute along different
dimensions. First, we review some of the most relevant existing features and
rules (proposed by Academia and Media) for anomalous Twitter accounts
detection. Second, we create a baseline dataset of verified human and fake
follower accounts. Such baseline dataset is publicly available to the
scientific community. Then, we exploit the baseline dataset to train a set of
machine-learning classifiers built over the reviewed rules and features. Our
results show that most of the rules proposed by Media provide unsatisfactory
performance in revealing fake followers, while features proposed in the past by
Academia for spam detection provide good results. Building on the most
promising features, we revise the classifiers both in terms of reduction of
overfitting and cost for gathering the data needed to compute the features. The
final result is a novel classifier, general enough to thwart
overfitting, lightweight thanks to the usage of the less costly features, and
still able to correctly classify more than 95% of the accounts of the original
training set. We ultimately perform an information fusion-based sensitivity
analysis, to assess the global sensitivity of each of the features employed by
the classifier. The findings reported in this paper, other than being supported
by a thorough experimental methodology and interesting on their own, also pave
the way for further investigation on the novel issue of fake Twitter followers
