    Integrating vehicle specific power methodology and microsimulation in estimating emissions on urban roundabouts

    In this study pollutant emissions were estimated from VSP modal emission rates and the distribution of time spent in each VSP mode obtained from the speed profiles both gathered in the field and simulated in AIMSUN at a sample of urban roundabouts. The versatility of the micro-simulation model for a calibration aimed at improving accuracy of emissions estimates was tested in order to ensure that second-by-second trajectories experienced in the field by a test vehicle through the sampled roundabouts properly reflected the simulated speed profiles. The first results which the thesis will refer, confirmed the feasibility of the smart approach that integrates the use of field-observed and simulated data to estimate emissions at urban roundabouts. It is also revealed friendly in collecting information via smartphone and in the subsequent data analysis and provided suggestions for large-scale data collection through a digital community. Another goal of this research is to investigate about the environmental performance after a conversion of a traditional existing roundabout into a turbo-roundabout. This aspect has been considered a positive approach for a novel attitude in the performance evaluation of road networks to align the infrastructural design with the aim of sustainable and low-emission mobility. The main finding provided from this study is referred to the positive potential of a novel attitude in the conceptualization and performance evaluation of road units in order to align urban infrastructural projects with the worldwide shared long-term ambitions for a low-emission mobility

    The 4th Symposium on Management of Future Motorway and Urban Traffic Systems (MFTS) was held in Dresden, Germany, from November 30th to December 2nd, 2022. Organized by the Chair of Traffic Process Automation (VPA) at the “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of the TU Dresden, the proceedings of this conference are published as volume 9 in the Chair’s publication series “Verkehrstelematik” and contain a large part of the presented conference extended abstracts. The focus of the MFTS conference 2022 was cooperative management of multimodal transport and reflected the vision of the professorship to be an internationally recognized group in ITS research and education with the goal of optimizing the operation of multimodal transport systems. In 14 MFTS sessions, current topics in demand and traffic management, traffic control in conventional, connected and automated transport, connected and autonomous vehicles, traffic flow modeling and simulation, new and shared mobility systems, digitization, and user behavior and safety were discussed.     Transport modelling: macro and micro simulation for the studied case of Funchal

    The work done in this thesis attempts to demonstrate the importance of using models that can predict and represent the mobility of our society. To answer the proposed challenges two models were examined, the first corresponds to macro simulation with the intention of finding a solution to the frequency of the bus company Horários do Funchal, responsible for transport in the city of Funchal, and some surrounding areas. Where based on a simplified model of the city it was possible to increase the frequency of journeys getting an overall reduction in costs. The second model concerns the micro simulation of Avenida do Mar, where currently is being built a new roundabout (Praça da Autonomia), which connects with this avenue. Therefore it was proposed to study the impact on local traffic, and the implementation of new traffic lights for this purpose. Four possible situations in which was seen the possibility of increasing the number of lanes on the roundabout or the insertion of a bus lane were created. The results showed that having a roundabout with three lanes running is the best option because the waiting queues are minimal, and at environmental level this model will project fewer pollutants. Thus, this thesis presents two possible methods of urban planning. Transport modelling is an area that is under constant development, the global goal is to encourage more and more the use of these models, and as such it is important to have more people to devote themselves to studying new ways of addressing current problems, so that we can have more accurate models and increasing their credibility

    COLOMBO Deliverable 1.1: Scenario Specifications and Required Modifications to Simulation Tools

    While targeting on supporting descriptions of scenarios and extensions to the simulation suite, the document additionally delivers a complete overview of the evaluation procedures to use in COLOMBO. Starting with an overview of the evaluation process, based on work done in the FESTA project, the document includes definitions of the performance indicators to use. These were originally produced by the iTETRIS project (by consortium partners of COLOMBO, mainly) and was extended within COLOMBO by performance indicators that describe the behaviour of inter-vehicle communication. To put the work on a scientific ground, a performed comparison of 40 scientific simulation studies is given, that shows that no standard scenarios and metrics exist. Additionally the document lists feature extensions which shall be implemented into the simulation tools within the COLOMBO project. Applicable software and data yielding to the scenarios were provided to the COLOMBO partners. As targeted, the document lists the scenarios made available within COLOMBO, distinguishing synthetic and real-world scenarios. Overall, seven scenarios based on real-world data were made available. Additionally, a tool that allows generating a large variety of synthetic scenarios is presented. The document ends with an extension (against the one given in D5.1) of requirements put on the simulations suite

    Safety impact of connected and autonomous vehicles on motorways: a traffic microsimulation study

    Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) promise to improve road safety greatly. Despite the numerous CAV trials around the globe, their benefit has yet to be proven using real-world data. The lack of real-world CAV data has shifted the focus of the research community from traditional safety impact assessment methods to traffic microsimulation in order to evaluate their impacts. However, a plethora of operational, tactical and strategic challenges arising from the implementation of CAV technology remain unaddressed. This thesis presents an innovative and integrated CAV traffic microsimulation framework that aims to cover the aforementioned shortcomings.A new CAV control algorithm is developed in C++ programming language containing a longitudinal and lateral control algorithm that for the first time takes into consideration sensor error and vehicle platoon formulation of various sizes. A route-based decision-making algorithm for CAVs is also developed. The algorithm is applied to a simulated network of the M1 motorway in the United Kingdom which is calibrated and validated using instrumented vehicle data and inductive loop detector data. Multiple CAV market penetration rate, platoon size and sensor error rate scenarios are formulated and evaluated. Safety evaluation is conducted using traffic conflicts as a safety surrogate measure which is a function of time-to-collision and post encroachment time. The results reveal significant safety benefit (i.e. 10-94% reduction of traffic conflicts) as CAV market penetration increases from 0% to 100%; however, it is underlined that special focus should be given in the motorway merging and diverging areas where CAVs seem to face the most challenges. Additionally, it is proven that if the correct CAV platoon size is implemented at the appropriate point in time, greater safety benefits may be achieved. Otherwise, safety might deteriorate. However, sensor error does not affect traffic conflicts for the studied network. These results could provide valuable insights to policy makers regarding the reconfiguration of existing infrastructure to accommodate CAVs, the trustworthiness of existing CAV equipment and the optimal platoon size that should be enforced according to the market penetration rate.Finally, in order to forecast the conflict reduction for any given market penetration rate and understand the underlying factors behind traffic conflicts in a traffic microsimulation environment in-depth, a hierarchical spatial Bayesian negative binomial regression model is developed, based on the simulated CAV data. The results exhibit that besides CAV market penetration rate, speed variance across lanes significantly affects the production of simulated conflicts. As speed variance increases, the safety benefit decreases. These results emphasize the importance of speed homogeneity between lanes in a motorway as well as the increased risk in the motorway merging/diverging areas.</div

    A macroscopic single-lane roundabout model to account for insertion delays and O-D patterns

    Available traffic simulation tools for roundabouts are exclusively based on a microscopic framework. This article provides a parsimonious macroscopic model able toreplicate the main traffic features occurring at this kind of intersections. Especially, it accounts for time-limited disruptions on the approach legs due to the insertion process, even when the entry demand does not exceed the merging capacity. It also computes circulating flows which are consistent with vehicle paths induced by the O-D traffic composition. The two-step validation process using data collected at two different roundabouts is convincing. Moreover, the model appears to be computer-efficient and has few easy-to-calibrate parameters. As a result, it can be easily linked to a traffic simulation package in order to model a whole urban network

    Predictive and explanatory assessments of traffic-related pedestrian injuries

    Pedestrians are an integral part of the modern transportation system but are often considered as the most vulnerable to severe traffic-related injury when compared to other road users. Between 1975 and 2009, annual pedestrian fatality counts in the United States have been decreasing steadily. However, after 2009, these counts have been increasing. Given that both the national demographic profile of the United States population and the physical makeup of transportation infrastructure show signs of aging, it is essential to understand how these affect pedestrian safety moving forward into future decades. This two-part thesis examines pedestrian safety trends from both of these perspectives. In the first part of this thesis, pedestrian fatality trends between 1975-2015, stratified by pedestrian age and sex, were analyzed and forecasted to the year 2035. Pedestrian fatality and exposure data were extracted from the NHTSA FARS and NHTS databases, respectively. Results showed that exposure-adjusted pedestrian fatality trends were consistently higher than observed pedestrian fatality counts across all ages and sexes, suggesting that interventions to reduce pedestrian fatalities have had a positive effect. Our fatality projection models indicated that traffic-related pedestrian deaths among children may continue to decrease, while pedestrian fatalities among adults aged 55 and older may increase significantly, which suggests that this cohort is at elevated risk. The second part of this thesis aimed at identifying factors that are significant in severe pedestrian injuries. Pedestrian injury data from the NHTSA GES database between 2011-2015 were examined. Odds ratios (ORs) of factors at the pedestrian, driver, crash, vehicle, environment and roadway levels were calculated. Results indicate that crashes at midblock had lower odds of fatal or serious pedestrian injury (OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.74 – 0.84) when compared to crashes at intersections with three or four approaches. Undivided roads (OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.23 – 0.27) and roads with painted medians (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.35 – 0.40) had protective effects against severe pedestrian injuries compared to roads with physical medians. Compared with locations with signalization, unsignalized locations with signage (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.44 – 1.71) or without signage (OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.27 – 1.45) were associated with higher odds of severe pedestrian injuries. Other factors such as light conditions and road surface conditions were also found to be significant in affecting the odds of a severe pedestrian injury. The findings presented in the two parts of this thesis provide further insight into the relationship between traffic-related pedestrian injury, human factors and the built environment. Further quantitative research is recommended to expand our understanding of pedestrian injury causality
