    Discovering user mobility and activity in smart lighting environments

    "Smart lighting" environments seek to improve energy efficiency, human productivity and health by combining sensors, controls, and Internet-enabled lights with emerging “Internet-of-Things” technology. Interesting and potentially impactful applications involve adaptive lighting that responds to individual occupants' location, mobility and activity. In this dissertation, we focus on the recognition of user mobility and activity using sensing modalities and analytical techniques. This dissertation encompasses prior work using body-worn inertial sensors in one study, followed by smart-lighting inspired infrastructure sensors deployed with lights. The first approach employs wearable inertial sensors and body area networks that monitor human activities with a user's smart devices. Real-time algorithms are developed to (1) estimate angles of excess forward lean to prevent risk of falls, (2) identify functional activities, including postures, locomotion, and transitions, and (3) capture gait parameters. Two human activity datasets are collected from 10 healthy young adults and 297 elder subjects, respectively, for laboratory validation and real-world evaluation. Results show that these algorithms can identify all functional activities accurately with a sensitivity of 98.96% on the 10-subject dataset, and can detect walking activities and gait parameters consistently with high test-retest reliability (p-value < 0.001) on the 297-subject dataset. The second approach leverages pervasive "smart lighting" infrastructure to track human location and predict activities. A use case oriented design methodology is considered to guide the design of sensor operation parameters for localization performance metrics from a system perspective. Integrating a network of low-resolution time-of-flight sensors in ceiling fixtures, a recursive 3D location estimation formulation is established that links a physical indoor space to an analytical simulation framework. Based on indoor location information, a label-free clustering-based method is developed to learn user behaviors and activity patterns. Location datasets are collected when users are performing unconstrained and uninstructed activities in the smart lighting testbed under different layout configurations. Results show that the activity recognition performance measured in terms of CCR ranges from approximately 90% to 100% throughout a wide range of spatio-temporal resolutions on these location datasets, insensitive to the reconfiguration of environment layout and the presence of multiple users.2017-02-17T00:00:00

    Survey on Recent Advances in Integrated GNSSs Towards Seamless Navigation Using Multi-Sensor Fusion Technology

    During the past few decades, the presence of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) such as GPS, GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo has facilitated positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) for various outdoor applications. With the rapid increase in the number of orbiting satellites per GNSS, enhancements in the satellite-based augmentation systems (SBASs) such as EGNOS and WAAS, as well as commissioning new GNSS constellations, the PNT capabilities are maximized to reach new frontiers. Additionally, the recent developments in precise point positioning (PPP) and real time kinematic (RTK) algorithms have provided more feasibility to carrier-phase precision positioning solutions up to the third-dimensional localization. With the rapid growth of internet of things (IoT) applications, seamless navigation becomes very crucial for numerous PNT dependent applications especially in sensitive fields such as safety and industrial applications. Throughout the years, GNSSs have maintained sufficiently acceptable performance in PNT, in RTK and PPP applications however GNSS experienced major challenges in some complicated signal environments. In many scenarios, GNSS signal suffers deterioration due to multipath fading and attenuation in densely obscured environments that comprise stout obstructions. Recently, there has been a growing demand e.g. in the autonomous-things domain in adopting reliable systems that accurately estimate position, velocity and time (PVT) observables. Such demand in many applications also facilitates the retrieval of information about the six degrees of freedom (6-DOF - x, y, z, roll, pitch, and heading) movements of the target anchors. Numerous modern applications are regarded as beneficiaries of precise PNT solutions such as the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), the automatic guided vehicles (AGV) and the intelligent transportation system (ITS). Hence, multi-sensor fusion technology has become very vital in seamless navigation systems owing to its complementary capabilities to GNSSs. Fusion-based positioning in multi-sensor technology comprises the use of multiple sensors measurements for further refinement in addition to the primary GNSS, which results in high precision and less erroneous localization. Inertial navigation systems (INSs) and their inertial measurement units (IMUs) are the most commonly used technologies for augmenting GNSS in multi-sensor integrated systems. In this article, we survey the most recent literature on multi-sensor GNSS technology for seamless navigation. We provide an overall perspective for the advantages, the challenges and the recent developments of the fusion-based GNSS navigation realm as well as analyze the gap between scientific advances and commercial offerings. INS/GNSS and IMU/GNSS systems have proven to be very reliable in GNSS-denied environments where satellite signal degradation is at its peak, that is why both integrated systems are very abundant in the relevant literature. In addition, the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems are widely adopted in the literature for its capability to provide 6-DOF to mobile vehicles and autonomous robots. LiDARs are very accurate systems however they are not suitable for low-cost positioning due to the expensive initial costs. Moreover, several other techniques from the radio frequency (RF) spectrum are utilized as multi-sensor systems such as cellular networks, WiFi, ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth. The cellular-based systems are very suitable for outdoor navigation applications while WiFi-based, UWB-based and Bluetooth-based systems are efficient in indoor positioning systems (IPS). However, to achieve reliable PVT estimations in multi-sensor GNSS navigation, optimal algorithms should be developed to mitigate the estimation errors resulting from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) GNSS situations. Examples of the most commonly used algorithms for trilateration-based positioning are Kalman filters, weighted least square (WLS), particle filters (PF) and many other hybrid algorithms by mixing one or more algorithms together. In this paper, the reviewed articles under study and comparison are presented by highlighting their motivation, the methodology of implementation, the modelling utilized and the performed experiments. Then they are assessed with respect to the published results focusing on achieved accuracy, robustness and overall implementation cost-benefits as performance metrics. Our summarizing survey assesses the most promising, highly ranked and recent articles that comprise insights into the future of GNSS technology with multi-sensor fusion technique.©2021 The Authors.     A Survey of Positioning Systems Using Visible LED Lights

Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    Sensor Fusion for Mobile Robot Localization using UWB and ArUco Markers

    Uma das principais características para considerar um robô autónomo é o facto de este ser capaz de se localizar, em tempo real, no seu ambiente, ou seja saber a sua posição e orientação. Esta é uma área desafiante que tem sido estudada por diversos investigadores em todo o mundo. Para obter a localização de um robô é possível recorrer a diferentes metodologias. No entanto há metodologias que apresentam problemas em diferentes circunstâncias, como é o caso da odometria que sofre de acumulação de erros com a distância percorrida pelo robô. Outro problema existente em diversas metodologias é a incerteza na deteção do robô devido a ruído presente nos sensores. Com o intuito de obter uma localização mais robusta do robô e mais tolerante a falhas é possível combinar diversos sistemas de localização, combinando assim as vantagens de cada um deles. Neste trabalho, será utilizado o sistema Pozyx, uma solução de baixo custo que fornece informação de posicionamento com o auxílio da tecnologia Ultra-WideBand Time-of-Flight (UWB ToF). Também serão utilizados marcadores ArUco colocados no ambiente que através da sua identificação por uma câmara é também possível obter informação de posicionamento. Estas duas soluções irão ser estudadas e implementadas num robô móvel, através de um esquema de localização baseada em marcadores. Primeiramente, irá ser feita uma caracterização do erro de ambos os sistemas, uma vez que as medidas não são perfeitas, havendo sempre algum ruído nas medições. De seguida, as medidas fornecidas pelos sistemas irão ser filtradas e fundidas com os valores da odometria do robô através da implementação de um Filtro de Kalman Extendido (EKF). Assim, é possível obter a pose do robô (posição e orientação), pose esta que é comparada com a pose fornecida por um sistema de Ground-Truth igualmente desenvolvido para este trabalho com o auxílio da libraria ArUco, percebendo assim a precisão do algoritmo desenvolvido. O trabalho desenvolvido mostrou que com a utilização do sistema Pozyx e dos marcadores ArUco é possível melhorar a localização do robô, o que significa que é uma solução adequada e eficaz para este fim.One of the main characteristics to consider a robot truly autonomous is the fact that it is able to locate itself, in real time, in its environment, that is, to know its position and orientation. This is a challenging area that has been studied by several researchers around the world. To obtain the localization of a robot it is possible to use different methodologies. However, there are methodologies that present problems in different circumstances, as is the case of odometry that suffers from error accumulation with the distance traveled by the robot. Another problem existing in several methodologies is the uncertainty in the sensing of the robot due to noise present in the sensors. In order to obtain a more robust localization of the robot and more fault tolerant it is possible to combine several localization systems, thus combining the advantages of each one. In this work, the Pozyx system will be used, a low-cost solution that provides positioning information through Ultra-WideBand Time-of-Flight (UWB ToF) technology. It will also be used ArUco markers placed in the environment that through their identification by a camera it is also possible to obtain positioning information. These two solutions will be studied and implemented in a mobile robot, through a beacon-based localization scheme. First, an error characterization of both systems will be performed, since the measurements are not perfect, and there is always some noise in the measurements. Next, the measurements provided by the systems will be filtered and fused with the robot's odometry values by the implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). In this way, it is possible to obtain the robot's pose, i.e position and orientation, which is compared with the pose provided by a Ground-Truth system also developed for this work with the aid of the ArUco library, thus realizing the accuracy of the developed algorithm. The developed work showed that with the use of the Pozyx system and ArUco markers it is possible to improve the robot localization, meaning that it is an adequate and effective solution for this purpose

    GPS precise positioning using multisensor data fusion for vehicular communication

    Ph. D. Thesis.The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a widely used timing, navigation and positioning system. However, its performance can be signifi- cantly degraded by the effects of the various sources of noises due to a highly dynamic multipath environment, signal blockage or attenuation due to ionospheric perturbation. Therefore, the aim of this research is to enhance the GPS signal acquisition and tracking ability to mitigate these effects. Furthermore, it is desirable to provide continuous and consistent positioning information under GPS-denied environments with assistance from multi-sensor data fusion techniques. In this thesis, a novel GPS signal acquisition approach for very dense multipath environments, using a low cost innovative dual polarization patch antenna attached to GPS receiver, is implemented. This reduces the acquisition processing time significantly compared to the conventional serial searching approach. Furthermore, it successfully acquires extra satellites in a dense multipath environment. Furthermore, the GPS signal carrier tracking loop has been considered as one of the most important links in order to demodulate the navigation data frame. An innovative carrier tracking loop is also proposed that comprises two approaches, namely, the adaptive Kalman filter and the adaptive unscented Kalman filter, dynamically integrated with a third order phased locked loop respectively. The proposed two-carrier tracking loops are compared against the conventional carrier tracking loop and the results prove that the proposed approach is more robust and accurate. The carrier tracking performance employing this novel approach is improved, especially in highly dynamic and low CNR environments. Finally, in order to integrate GPS and the sensors, GPS, IMU (inertial measurement unit) and LiDAR are combined for data fusion. A novel line feature extraction and mapping algorithm was designed for LiDAR navigation with a low complexity that resulted in faster feature extraction. This was followed by an innovative integration scheme that combined GPS, IMU and LiDAR, which resulted in continuous, precise positioning data for vehicular communication, even when GPS signals are not available, in a harsh multipath environment

    Towards autonomous localization and mapping of AUVs: a survey

    Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to investigate two key elements of localization and mapping of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), i.e. to overview various sensors and algorithms used for underwater localization and mapping, and to make suggestions for future research. Design/methodology/approach The authors first review various sensors and algorithms used for AUVs in the terms of basic working principle, characters, their advantages and disadvantages. The statistical analysis is carried out by studying 35 AUV platforms according to the application circumstances of sensors and algorithms. Findings As real-world applications have different requirements and specifications, it is necessary to select the most appropriate one by balancing various factors such as accuracy, cost, size, etc. Although highly accurate localization and mapping in an underwater environment is very difficult, more and more accurate and robust navigation solutions will be achieved with the development of both sensors and algorithms. Research limitations/implications This paper provides an overview of the state of art underwater localisation and mapping algorithms and systems. No experiments are conducted for verification. Practical implications The paper will give readers a clear guideline to find suitable underwater localisation and mapping algorithms and systems for their practical applications in hand. Social implications There is a wide range of audiences who will benefit from reading this comprehensive survey of autonomous localisation and mapping of UAVs. Originality/value The paper will provide useful information and suggestions to research students, engineers and scientists who work in the field of autonomous underwater vehicles

    Multisensor navigation systems: a remedy for GNSS vulnerabilities?

    Space-based positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies, such as the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) provide position, velocity, and timing information to an unlimited number of users around the world. In recent years, PNT information has become increasingly critical to the security, safety, and prosperity of the World's population, and is now widely recognized as an essential element of the global information infrastructure. Due to its vulnerabilities and line-of-sight requirements, GNSS alone is unable to provide PNT with the required levels of integrity, accuracy, continuity, and reliability. A multisensor navigation approach offers an effective augmentation in GNSS-challenged environments that holds a promise of delivering robust and resilient PNT. Traditionally, sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMUs), barometers, magnetometers, odometers, and digital compasses, have been used. However, recent trends have largely focused on image-based, terrain-based and collaborative navigation to recover the user location. This paper offers a review of the technological advances that have taken place in PNT over the last two decades, and discusses various hybridizations of multisensory systems, building upon the fundamental GNSS/IMU integration. The most important conclusion of this study is that in order to meet the challenging goals of delivering continuous, accurate and robust PNT to the ever-growing numbers of users, the hybridization of a suite of different PNT solutions is required

    Vision-Aided Autonomous Precision Weapon Terminal Guidance Using a Tightly-Coupled INS and Predictive Rendering Techniques

    This thesis documents the development of the Vision-Aided Navigation using Statistical Predictive Rendering (VANSPR) algorithm which seeks to enhance the endgame navigation solution possible by inertial measurements alone. The eventual goal is a precision weapon that does not rely on GPS, functions autonomously, thrives in complex 3-D environments, and is impervious to jamming. The predictive rendering is performed by viewpoint manipulation of computer-generated of target objects. A navigation solution is determined by an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) which corrects positional errors by comparing camera images with a collection of statistically significant virtual images. Results indicate that the test algorithm is a viable method of aiding an inertial-only navigation system to achieve the precision necessary for most tactical strikes. On 14 flight test runs, the average positional error was 166 feet at endgame, compared with an inertial-only error of 411 feet
