“Look, Son, This Is Your Country:” Spacializing Influence On Perceptions Of Indigeneity

AMUKISHMI, an indigenous women-led ecotourism cooperative in Amazonian Ecuador, caters to tourists while pursuing goals of cultural valorization. In AMUKISHMI, and all other ecotourism operations, space is a critical mediator through which audiences interpret performances of indigeneity. By analyzing case studies of performances in the cooperative and in a Quito mall, I demonstrate how the control of space (or lack thereof) is critical in shaping how audiences perceive indigeneity, as well as impacting the women’s pursuit of their strategic goals

The research demonstrated that sheet metal fabrication machines can utilize machine learning to gain competitive advantage. With various possible applications of machine learning, it was decided to focus on the topic of predictive maintenance. Implementation of the predictive service is accomplished with Microsoft Azure Machine Learning. The aim was to demonstrate to the stakeholders at the case company potential laying in machine learning. It was found that besides machine learning technologies being founded on sophisticated algorithms and mathematics it can still be utilized and bring benefits with moderate effort required. Significance of this study is in it demonstrating potentials of the machine learning to be used in improving operations management and especially for sheet metal fabrication machines.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

Embera Drua: The Impact of Tourism on Indigenous Village Life in Panama

    Get PDF
This case study examines the experience of residents of the Indigenous village of Embera Drua, Panama with 20 years of tourism. It addresses the lack of Indigenous voices in tourism literature by telling the story of Embera Drua through the lens of the villagers themselves. The study uses a mix of ethnographic observation and narrative inquiry and finds that the experience of Embera Drua mirrors the experience of other Indigenous villages offering tourism around the globe, particularly the impact of lack of community capacity on management and growth of such tourism initiatives. Findings of this study are relevant to the international discourse on tourism as a development tool.
