    A Framework for Real-Time Service-Oriented Architecture

    Service-oriented architectures (SOA), though widely accepted in a variety of industries, must be enhanced to support real-time activities in order to gain even greater adoption.We present RT-Llama, a novel architecture for real-time SOA to support predictability in business processes. Based on a user-specified process and deadline, our architecture, containing global resource management and business process composition components, can reserve resources in advance for each service in the process to ensure it meets its end-to-end deadline. This is facilitated by also creating a real-time enterprise middleware that manages utilization of local resources by using efficient data structures and handles service requests via reserved CPU bandwidth. We demonstrate that RT-Llama’s reservation components are both efficient and adaptable to dynamic real-time environments

    Web based system architecture for long pulse remote experimentation

    Remote experimentation (RE) methods will be essential in next generation fusion devices. Requirements for long pulse RE will be: on-line data visualization, on-line data acquisition processes monitoring and on-line data acquisition systems interactions (start, stop or set-up modifications). Note that these methods are not oriented to real-time control of fusion plant devices. INDRA Sistemas S.A., CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) and UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) have designed a specific software architecture for these purposes. The architecture can be supported on the BeansNet platform, whose integration with an application server provides an adequate solution to the requirements. BeansNet is a JINI based framework developed by INDRA, which makes easy the implementation of a remote experimentation model based on a Service Oriented Architecture. The new software architecture has been designed on the basis of the experience acquired in the development of an upgrade of the TJ-II remote experimentation system

    Enterprises can be empowered to live up to the potential of becoming dynamic, agile and real-time. Service orientation is emerging from the amalgamation of a number of key business, technology and cultural developments. Three essential trends in particular are coming together to create a new revolutionary breed of enterprise, the service-oriented enterprise (SOE): (1) the continuous performance management of the enterprise; (2) the emergence of business process management; and (3) advances in the standards-based service-oriented infrastructures. This thesis focuses on this emerging three-layered architecture that builds on a service-oriented architecture framework, with a process layer that brings technology and business together, and a corporate performance layer that continually monitors and improves the performance indicators of global enterprises provides a novel framework for the business context in which to apply the important technical idea of service orientation and moves it from being an interesting tool for engineers to a vehicle for business managers to fundamentally improve their businesses

    Towards automated service trading

    The service-oriented architecture is a promising means to support outsourcing amongst real-time enterprises. In this context, SLAs (Service Level Agreements) are essential because they grant guarantees about how a service must be provided or consumed. We define service trading as the process of locating, selecting, negotiating, and creating SLAs. Although automating the service trading process is a key characteristic of a real-time enterprise, to the best of our knowledge it has not been completely addressed yet. In this article, we propose a conceptual framework for automated service trading. Therefore, our goal is not to implement a concrete architecture but to develop a framework that can be used to define, compare and analyse the interoperability of different service trading architectures. The novel contributions of this paper are threefold: we identify the roles and interactions that are necessary to carry out this automated service trading, we motivate and introduce the idea of trading protocols, and we define the elements that are necessary to support an automated decision-making in service tradin

    A Real-Time Service-Oriented Architecture for Industrial Automation

    Industrial automation platforms are experiencing a paradigm shift. New technologies are making their way in the area, including embedded real-time systems, standard local area networks like Ethernet, Wi-Fi and ZigBee, IP-based communication protocols, standard service oriented architectures (SOAs) and Web services. An automation system will be composed of flexible autonomous components with plug & play functionality, self configuration and diagnostics, and autonomic local control that communicate through standard networking technologies. However, the introduction of these new technologies raises important problems that need to be properly solved, one of these being the need to support real-time and quality-of-service (QoS) for real-time applications. This paper describes a SOA enhanced with real-time capabilities for industrial automation. The proposed architecture allows for negotiation of the QoS requested by clients from Web services, and provides temporal encapsulation of individual activities. This way, it is possible to perform an a priori analysis of the temporal behavior of each service, and to avoid unwanted interference among them. After describing the architecture, experimental results gathered on a real implementation of the framework (which leverages a soft real-time scheduler for the Linux kernel) are presented, showing the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The experiments were performed on simple case studies designed in the context of industrial automation applications

    Towards a microscopic traffic simulation framework to assess vehicle-to-vehicle networks

    This paper presents the specification of a framework based on the concept of service-oriented architectures (SOA) to support the assessment of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET). A preliminary study of concepts related to SOA was carried out, as well as of those technologies that allow real-time data acquisition and dissemination within urban environments, and simulation tools to aid the simulation of the VANET. The requirements for our simulation framework were identified and a two-layered architecture was specified, which rely on the abstraction levels of services for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. A prototypical application was implemented, which was used to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach presented through experimental results

    A Service Oriented Architecture Approach for Global Positioning System Quality of Service Monitoring

    This research focuses on the development of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for monitoring the Global Positioning System (GPS) Standard Positioning Service (SPS) in near real time utilizing a Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) technique. A unique approach to developing the MCS SOA was developed that utilized both the Depart- ment of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and the SOA Modeling Language (SoaML) guidance. The combination of these two frameworks resulted in generation of all the architecture products required to evaluate the SOA through the use of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) techniques. Ultimately this research provides a feasibility analysis for utilization of mobile distributed sensors to provide situational awareness of the GPS Quality of Service (QoS). First this research provides justification for development of a new monitoring architecture and defines the scope of the SOA. Then an exploration of current SOA, MBSE, and Geospatial System Information (GIS) research was conducted. Next a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) of the MCS participant interactions was developed and simulated within AGI\u27s Systems Toolkit. The architecture performance analysis was executed using a GIS software package known as ArcMap. Finally, this research concludes with a suitability analysis of the proposed architecture for detecting sources of GPS interference within an Area of Interest (AoI)

    A quality of service framework for dependability in large-scale distributed systems

    As recognition grows within industry for the advantages that can be gained through the exploitation of large-scale dynamic systems, a need emerges for dependable performance. Future systems are being developed with a requirement to support mission critical and safety critical applications. These levels of criticality require predictable performance and as such have traditionally not been associated with adaptive systems. The software architecture proposed for such systems takes its properties from the service-oriented computing paradigm and the communication model follows a publish/subscribe approach. While adaptive, such architectures do not, however, typically support real-time levels of performance. There is scope, however, for dependability within such architectures through the use of Quality of Service (QoS) methods. QoS is used in systems where the distribution of resources cannot be decided at design time. In this paper a QoS based framework is proposed for providing adaptive and dependable behaviour for future large-scale dynamic systems through the flexible allocation of resources. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the benefits of the QoS framework and the tradeoffs that occur between negotiation algorithms of varying complexities
