    Get PDF
With the development of urban transportation, more and more traffic accidents happened, most of which were caused by ultra-high vehicles, which not only damaged the road facilities, but also endangered the safety of the masses. In this study, a vehicle height detection system was designed and applied to urban transportation to prevent such accidents. The system utilized the laser light curtain principle of the laser sensor to accurately detect the height of vehicles, equipped with an optical signal anti - interference system and an anti - collision alarm system. The experimental results showed that the system could effectively detect the unqualified vehicles and give alarms, which provided a reference for the application of laser sensor in urban road traffic detection

ThesisWhen Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, he never envisioned the wealth of late 20th century high technology applications of his intended simple personal communications device. With this investigation, advantage was taken of combining the existing Eskom communications network with new-technology SCADA equipment, in order to allow communications from the control centre at Bloemfontein to the actual pole-mounted breaker in the field, covering the Free State distributor. Due to the high costs, and the complex maintenance performance of the existing network, a telecontrol system was developed that requires minimal maintenance and provides high reliability in order to promote efficient functioning of the network. With this development the use of existing products, skills and technology were applied to obtain effective pole-mounted telecontrol, to enhance the use of present technology in the rural areas of the distributor

2020 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.Controller Area Network (CAN) communications are an essential element of modern vehicles, particularly heavy trucks. However, CAN protocols are vulnerable from a cybersecurity perspective in that they have no mechanism for authentication or authorization. Attacks on vehicle CAN systems present a risk to driver privacy and possibly driver safety. Therefore, developing new tools and techniques to detect cybersecurity threats within CAN networks is a critical research topic. A key component of this research is compiling a large database of representative CAN data from operational vehicles on the road. This database will be used to develop methods for detecting intrusions or other potential threats. In this paper, an open-source CAN logger was developed that used hardware and software following the industry security standards to securely log and transmit heavy vehicle CAN data. A hardware prototype demonstrated the ability to encrypt data at over 6 Megabits per second (Mbps) and successfully log all data at 100% bus load on a 1 Mbps baud CAN network in a laboratory setting. An AES-128 Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) encryption mode was chosen. A Hardware Security Module (HSM) was used to generate and securely store asymmetric key pairs for cryptographic communication with a third-party cloud database. It also implemented Elliptic-Curve Cryptography (ECC) algorithms to perform key exchange and sign the data for integrity verification. This solution ensures secure data collection and transmission because only encrypted data is ever stored or transmitted, and communication with the third-party cloud server uses shared, asymmetric secret keys as well as Transport Layer Security (TLS)

An Integrated Control and Data Acquisition System for Pharmaceutical Capsule Inspection

Pharmaphil Inc. manufactures two-part gelatin capsules for the pharmaceutical industry. Their current methods of quality control of their product is by performing manual inspection of every carton of capsules prior to shipment. In today\u27s modern manufacturing world, more efficient and cost-effective means of quality control exist. It is Pharmaphil\u27s desire to develop a custom machine vision system to replace manual inspection with a potential opportunity in the capsule manufacturing quality control market. In collaboration with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Windsor, a novel system was developed to achieve this goal. The objective was to develop a system capable of inspecting 1000 capsules per minute with the ability to detect holes, cracks, dents, bubble, double caps and incorrect colour or size. Using an antiquated machine vision system for capsule inspection from the mid-nineties as a base, a modern inspection system was developed that performed faster and more thorough inspections. As a measure to minimize the overall system cost as well as to increase flexibility, a full custom design was undertaken. The resulting system follows a traditional machine vision system whereby the main components include an image acquisition component, a processing unit and machine control. The designed system uses custom USB2.0 cameras to acquire images, a standard desktop PC to process image data and a custom machine control board to perform machine control and timing. The system operates with four identical quadrants operating in parallel to increase throughput. The final system developed provided a proof-of-concept for the approach taken. The machine control and image acquisition component of the system yielded a maximum throughput of 1200 capsules per minute. After incorporating image inspection, the final result was a system that was capable of inspecting capsules at a rate of about 800 capsules per minute with high accuracy. With optimizations, the system throughput can be further improved. The findings throughout the development of the prototype system provide an excellent basis from which the first generation commercial unit can be designed

The rapid advance of computing technology has created a world powered by millions of computers. Often these computers are idly consuming energy unnecessarily in spite of all the efforts of hardware manufacturers. This thesis examines proposals to determine when to power down computers without negatively impacting on the service they are used to deliver, compares and contrasts the efficiency of virtualisation with containerisation, and investigates the energy efficiency of the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin. We begin by examining the current corpus of literature and defining the key terms we need to proceed. Then we propose a technique for improving the energy consumption of servers by moving them into a sleep state and employing a low powered device to act as a proxy in its place. After this we move on to investigate the energy efficiency of virtualisation and compare the energy efficiency of two of the most common means used to do this. Moving on from this we look at the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. We consider the energy consumption of bitcoin mining and if this compared with the value of bitcoin makes this profitable. Finally we conclude by summarising the results and findings of this thesis. This work increases our understanding of some of the challenges of energy efficient computation as well as proposing novel mechanisms to save energy
